The online admission mode adopted for admission to plus one course by the department of general education has offered a harrowing ordeal to a large section of students and parents. Hundreds of those who entered incorrect mobile number details while submitting application forms now run pillar to post to get a chance to rectify their application.

The department of general education has decided to conduct Plus One admission online because of Covid 's restrictions. A large section of students, as is the practice, banked on private tuition centers and Akshaya centers to get their applications filled in and submitted online for admission.

Unlike in the past, however, the higher secondary directorate started sending One Time Password (OTP) messages to the registered telephone numbers so that the applicants could verify their applications and participate in the further process. This rang alarm bells as those entered incorrect or inaccessible telephone numbers were unable to make their applications final submission. August 24, 2020 is the date for trial allotments.

"No OTPs were generated by the time applications were submitted until last year. As a general practice, many who filled out the application forms gave random telephone numbers while submitting the online forms. Further procedures for admission were used to keep offline. The difficulties that followed this time could have been averted had the OTP been generated at the time of submission. Instead, it started generating days later, leaving many with no option to continue participating in the admission procedure and submitting the final confirmation', said General Secretary of the Association of Higher Secondary School Teachers Anil M George.

Many of the students and parents have yet to fully understand the procedure for admission. Many of them don't know they need to make the application's final confirmation via the candidate login. "In this context, the government should be given wide publicity on the admission procedures to be followed. Also, students should be given enough time to correct the anomalies in the forms of their applications,' said Anil.

The education minister's office said the government was aware of the scenario and would take appropriate steps to address the difficulties students encounter after submitting incorrect telephone numbers during the application.
