LPU’s Agro-Scientists Discover a New Fungal Disease

New Delhi: Researchers at Lovely Professional University (LPU) have made a significant advancement in the field of agriculture.

A team of agroscientists from the LPU School of Agriculture's Department of Plant Pathology have identified a new fungus disease that infects the Karanja plant.

The Karanja trees, also known scientifically as "pongamia pinnata," have been suffering serious damage as a result of the fungus pestalotiopsis macadamiae.

The Discovery

A substantial outbreak of the leaf spot disease in the Karanja trees was observed in July 2022 in the Hardaspur village, which the LPU adopted and is close to the institution.

Realising the severity of the situation, LPU's agro-scientists immediately embarked on a quest to identify the cause of the damage and save this rare plant species.

Their efforts were successful because they were able to pinpoint the precise new fungal infection that was causing the outbreak. In June 2023, this ground-breaking finding—which clarified the growing danger to the Karanja plant was published in the esteemed journal "New Disease Reports."

The Team

Deewakar Baral, Sukram Thapa, and AK Koshariya, assistant professors, are a part of the study team that produced this remarkable result. The discovery of the novel fungal disease was made possible in large part by their dedication and breadth of plant pathology knowledge.

The evaluation organisations received the report outlining their results in December 2022, and it was formally accepted on May 23, 2023.

Accolades For The Researchers

Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal, Chancellor of LPU, conveyed his sincere appreciation to the scientists for their tremendous contribution. He stressed that this finding is a result of the faculty, staff, and students at LPU's tireless work and dedication.

The LPU is known for its proficiency in agricultural sciences and has been recognised by the Ministry of Agriculture as the first private institution in India to get ICAR accreditation.

The institution is committed to provide students the best learning opportunities through cutting edge training, hands-on learning opportunities, and exposure to industrial farms.

LPU equips its students to meet issues in the real world and to contribute to the agriculture industry by fostering an innovative and research-oriented culture.

Importance Of Karanja Plant

The Karanja plant, also known as "pongamia pinnata," is a medium-sized, quickly-growing evergreen shrub or tree. It has a lot of uses and is highly precious.

Oil produced by the business is recognised for being used in a range of industries.

It also offers wood, fuel, insect repellant, colours, and medicinal ingredients.

The Karanja plant is good for agroforestry duties including reducing soil erosion, stabilising sand dunes, and doing so. It is also beneficial as green manure for rice paddies, sugarcane fields, and coffee plantations.
