MPhil Courses Declared as Not a Recognised Degree by UGC

New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a notice warning students about the universities who are providing M.Phil Degree to students despite its cancellation. Following the implementation of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of PhD Degree) Regulations 2022, UGC had earlier declared that M.Phil will no longer be considered as a valid degree in India.

According to Regulation No 14 of these new regulations, higher education institutions are strictly prohibited from offering M.Phil programmes. These regulations were published in the Gazette of India on November 7, 2022. The decision was taken in line with the National Education Policy 2020.

Despite the UGC’s announcement on the cancellation of the MPhil programme, the commission has seen that various universities are still inviting fresh applications for admission to their M.Phil Degree Courses.

"It has come to the notice of the UGC that a few Universities are inviting fresh applications for M.Phil. (Master of Philosophy) program. In this regard, it is to bring to the notice that the M.Phil. degree is not a recognized degree. The Regulation No. 14 of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations 2022 clearly states that Higher Educational Institutions shall not offer M.Phil. program," reads UGC's notification.

UGC has also asked the universities to take stern actions and immediately stop the admission process to M.Phil Courses from the academic session 2023.
