NCERT Collaborates with ISLRTC to standardize Indian Sign Language

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) collaborates with the Indian Sign Language Research And Training Center (ISLRTC) to develop various resources and come up with ideas to regulate Indian Sign language.

NCERT signed the agreement with the ISLRTC on October 6, Tuesday on the auspicious occasion of the 60th Foundation day of NCERT.

Union Education Minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ who was present at the event, said this agreement will boost and upliftment for the differently-abled children of the nation. This will reduce the disparities between the disabled and the normal students.

On September 25, 2015, the Ministry of Education approved the establishment of ISLRTC. The sole aim of the Institute is to plan for the future and development of a specially-abled community. 

The initial stage of this pact will focus on converting the NCERT textbooks and study material into Indian Sign Language.

It has been planned to transform NCERT Textbooks, Teachers Handbook, and other Supplementary materials and resources of Class I-XII of all subjects of both Hindi and English Medium into the Indian sign language. 

Special ink will be used to change the Indian Sign Language in a digital format. This will enable the reach of standard education to every student irrespective of his/her disabilities.

Various officials highlighted the importance of this agreement. They said that schools often neglect students with hearing impairments and through this initiative, this problem will be addressed.

Another official named Anita Karwal insisted that the New Education Policy highlights ‘multilingualism’ and the Indian Sign Language will be taken into account under the same. She said that Indian Sign Language must not be restricted only to specially-abled people; it must be made open to all students.

Karwal also requested the concerned authorities to speed up the work on the National Curriculum Framework (NCF). The Ministry will release the National Curriculum Framework in 2020-21. 

NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) is an autonomous body that is responsible for preparing education material for students for classes of Elementary, secondary, and senior secondary levels. The curriculum varies regularly, especially under the NEP 2020.
