The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has announced that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Postgraduate (NEET PG) 2026 will be conducted in a single shift on August 30, 2026. The official notification is hosted on the NBEMS website at natboard.edu.in. The Union Health Ministry confirmed that 2,73,183 candidates have registered for the exam this year. This is a rise of over 12.5 percent compared to the previous cycle.
The single-shift decision follows a Supreme Court directive on exam parity. It aims to ensure uniform question difficulty and a fairer assessment for all candidates. The exam will be held across nearly 340 cities at more than 1,300 test centres.

What Has Changed in the Exam Pattern?
The revised pattern reduces the paper from 200 to 180 multiple-choice questions. The total time remains 210 minutes. This gives candidates more time per question without extending the overall duration. NBEMS said the change supports deeper reasoning and reduces time pressure.
How Are Exam Centres Being Allotted?
The centre allocation process has been overhauled to bring candidates closer to home. During registration, candidates now select three preferred states. The correspondence address is treated as the mandatory first preference.
The earlier first-come-first-served model has been replaced with a preference-based system. Test city details will be shared with candidates about two to three weeks before the exam. This gives students more time to arrange travel and stay.

What Are the Counselling Reforms for NEET PG 2026?
The Medical Counselling Committee has also eased the counselling process for 2026. Candidates can now use an online seat resignation facility. There is no need to physically report for admission formalities when opting for an upgrade.
NRI candidates can upload their documentation directly through the counselling portal. Round 1 counselling begins on August 4, 2026. The academic session for admitted candidates will start on September 8, 2026.
