NMC Reverses Decision on MBBS Passing Marks Amendment to 40%; Check Details Here

New Delhi: National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued an important notice regarding an amendment to the Competency-Based Medical Education Curriculum (CBME) Guidelines. According to the official notice, the Commission has reversed its decision to reduce the passing marks to 40% for MBBS subjects consisting of two papers.

In line with the official notice available on the NMC's website at nmc.org.in, it states that this follows the recent Amendment in CBME guidelines as issued through a 'Corrigendum' with reference No. F.No.U/ 14021/B /2023 -UGMEB dated September 1, 2023, where a new amendment was introduced to the CBME Guidelines on page number 58. 

After careful consideration of the matter, it has been decided that implementing this change retrospectively is not feasible, the official NMC notification said. 

Earlier, on September 1, it was required for a student to attain a minimum of 40% marks in total (combining both papers) to pass in these subjects. Nevertheless, following a comprehensive review of the matter, the Commission has determined that implementing this change retrospectively is not feasible.

What the Amended Page 58 of CBME Guidelines Entailed:

• In subjects consisting of two papers, students were required to achieve a minimum of 40% marks in total (combining both papers) to pass in that particular subject.
• Passing Criteria for a Subject: To pass in a subject, a candidate needed to secure 50% marks in aggregate and a minimum of 60:40 or 40:60 in the University-conducted examination separately for theory and practical components (which encompass practical, clinical, and viva voce assessments

Original Amended Page 58 of CBME Guidelines:

• Page 58 of the CBME Guidelines stipulated that in subjects consisting of two papers, students were required to achieve a minimum of 50% marks in total (combining both papers) to pass in that specific subject.
• Passing Criteria for a Subject: To pass a subject, a candidate needed to secure 50% marks in the University-conducted examination separately for theory and practical components (which encompass practical, clinical, and viva voce assessments).
