The Odisha Government has stalled the decision to reopen school this month anticipating a second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic to hit the country in the mid of December 2020.
Samir Ranjan Dash, Odisha’s School, Mass Education Minister, stated that earlier, it was decided by the state to reopen school activities for students of classes 9 to 12 in November. However, fears of a possible second wave made the government reconsider its decision.

Additionally, Naveen Patnaik, Chief Minister, has recently spread awareness regarding a possible second wave, and the department followed his advice not to put students’ health and wellbeing in jeopardy.
Dash further informed that the department had already formed a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for resuming the schools, but the pandemic situation does not support offline activities.

The minister also added that any further decision related to the matter would be made, after consultations with collectors and district education officers. Meanwhile, students, as of now, will continue to attend online lectures.
Although, according to Unlock 6.0 guidelines released by the state government, schools would be allowed to reopen institute activities after November 15, 2020, for students of Classes 9 to 12, in a phased manner.
The decision was reconsidered after it was found that the viral disease has affected hundreds of students and teachers in neighboring Andhra Pradesh, where classes for senior school students began in offline mode on November 2, 2020.
