He also encouraged the youth to grow interest in AI tools and how to implement them in real-time language translation. He mentioned how AI Tool ‘Bhashini’ has helped him translate during the Tamil-Kashi Sangam.
New Delhi: The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi has emphasized how the new National Education Policy is playing a crucial role in overcoming language barriers in the education system during his 108th ‘Mann ki Baat’ conducted on December 31, 2023.
He recalled a historical practice where school students used to drop out and also leave education in some cases due to language difficulties. Accordion to him, language should not stand in the way of education for any child.
Addressing the issue, PM Modi stated, “In our country, numerous children used to abandon their studies midway due to language challenges. The implementation of our new National Education Policy is effectively addressing and eliminating these hurdles in the learning process and the comprehensive development of a child. Our sincere effort is to prevent language from becoming an obstacle to the education and advancement of every child.”
He also mentioned the mythological and holy significance of the number 108 in our country. “This marks the 108th episode of our collective journey. The number 108 holds profound significance, with its sanctity deeply studied. Whether it’s the 108 beads in a rosary, chanting 108 times, 108 divine sites, 108 stairs in temples, or 108 bells, this number is associated with immense faith. Hence, the 108th episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’ is particularly special for me.”
The National Education Policy (NEP) was launched by the Centre on July 29, 2020, with the aim of bringing significant reforms to school education. Te main aim of the policy is to make education accessible and attainable to all sections of the society.
NEP promises early childhood care and education for all children between 3-7 years. A new curricular and pedagogical structure (5+3+3+4)has been implemented where there will be no matriculation and graduation will be of four years.
He also encouraged the youth to explore and research on AI and their implementations in real-time translating devices. He also talked about the AI tool ‘Bhashini’ which he used during the Kashi Tamil Sangamam earlier this month for real-time translation for the benefit of his Tamil-speaking audience.
"I was addressing from the stage in Hindi but through the AI tool Bhashini, the people from Tamil Nadu, who were attending the event, could follow my address at the same time as the others. There was noticeable excitement around this new experiment among the visitors to the Kashi-Tamil Sangamam," he said.

"You can imagine the revolutionary change that could be brought about once this technology is used more widely in our schools, hospitals and courts. I would urge the youth and the future generation to further explore AI tools, especially those pertaining to real-time translations and make them 100 per cent foolproof. In the coming days, the onus will be on them to not just preserve our native languages but also promote them," PM Modi said.
"The day is not far when an address will be delivered in one language and the public will listen to the same speech in their own language real-time. The same will happen with films, as the audience will follow real-time translation of regional films at a cinema hall," he added.
