New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India has decided not to intervene in the ongoing admission process of St. Stephen's College. According to the court, any interference at this stage will create confusion among students, especially when the admission process has already started.

SC has given instructions to the Delhi High Court to move quickly, therefore students will get confidence in the admission process from the bench led by Justices AS Bopanna and PS Narasimha. The change was done in response to the St. Stephen’s College appeal of the University of Delhi’s directive that the allocated Christian quota seats be based completely on CUET result, omitting the need for an interview. Delhi’s HC two-judge bench claims that the State has the power to create rules and regulations for the minority community. However, the rules must benefit the minority community.

According to the media report the order stated “ However, it is for the minority institution to decide what is best for the minority community." As per the court order, the executive committee demands 100% weightage for CUET scores "prima facie shows a complete lack of reasoning as to why the ruling of this court has been given a go-by by DU and demonstrates non-application of mind on their part while making the disputed decision."

The High Court was well informed that DU’s notification violets the September 2022 court decision, Which shows that the interviews for admission through non-reserved categories cannot be given weight by the college as per the High Court order. Delhi University Attorney General Tushar Mehta focused on the subjective nature of interviews. According to him, enabling the same would lead to "payment seats."

The High Court has already made it clear that college admission will depend on how the issue was resolved. That is why the Supreme Court rejected to reverse the interim order.
