failing a subject in final year at VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University):

under VTU's CBCS scheme:

  • if you fail a subject in the final year (7th or 8th semester), you get an 'F' grade in that subject
  • under CBCS, you are not detained — there is no year back. you can still be issued a provisional completion certificate after completing other semesters if only 7th/8th sem subjects remain
  • you must clear the backlog(s) by appearing in subsequent attempts at the supplementary exams VTU conducts
  • Degree not awarded until all required credits are cleared — you cannot convocate with pending backlogs
  • you can attempt backlogs as many times as needed within the maximum 8-year program duration

practical impact: if you fail 1-2 subjects in final year, you'll get your degree a semester or two later than your batchmates. for campus placements, you might be excluded from final placement drives if results are pending. address it quickly to minimize delay.

Failing one subject in final year engineering at VTU — this situation has specific consequences and timelines that are important to understand clearly.

Immediate consequences:

  • Your degree certificate and convocation are held until all subjects are cleared.
  • The failed subject shows as Grade "F" on your grade card.
  • You appear for a supplementary examination (also called backlog exam) in the next exam cycle.

Timeline and exam windows:

  • VTU supplementary exams are held approximately 2 months after main results. For even sem (April/May results): July-August supplementary. For odd sem: Feb-March supplementary.
  • If you fail the supplementary too: Wait for the NEXT main exam season (6 months away) — you appear alongside current year students.

Impact on job offers (the critical part):

  • Most companies give a conditional joining letter requiring submission of degree certificate within 3-6 months of joining.
  • If you don't clear the backlog within that window: The company CAN cancel your offer. In practice, many companies extend the deadline once — but don't rely on this.
  • IT companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro) specifically have "No Active Backlog" condition at joining.

Maximum study duration: VTU allows 7 years from date of admission to complete all subjects (CBCS batch). After that, re-admission is required.

Practical advice: Appear in EVERY supplementary exam opportunity — don't skip even one cycle.

If you fail in a subject in the final year of Engineering at VTU, you will get a year back. You will have to wait another year to clear the subject. You won’t get your degree until you clear all the subjects.

Attaching a video for reference to understand the process

However, the final year subjects are easier compared to the rest of the year engineering subjects. You can clear the subjects easily if you put in a little bit of effort.

VTU has a semester system. In the final year, there are two semesters. If you fail in a subject in 7th semester, you will get a chance to clear it in the final semester, i.e. 8th semester. In each semester examination, VTU conducts all semester subjects. If you fail in a subject in the 8th semester, you won’t get your degree, until you clear it.

But final year subjects are much easier compared to the rest of the years, at VTU. You can clear the final year subjects easily with a bit of effort.

If you fail in the 7th semester then you have a chance to clear it during your final semester exam. Since VTU conducts all semester subjects in each semester examination.

If you fail in your final semester then you are not eligible for a degree. So you must wait till the next few months when semester exams for odd semesters begin and clear it.

If you are coming into the final year, it means you can never fail as subjects are much easier.
