Course Curriculum Overview

5

I chose to pursue a Bachelor's in architecture because I've always had a passion for drawing and designing. Architecture is the perfect blend of creativity and practicalioty, and I wanted a course that would allow me to express my ideas through design. One of the major factors that influenced my decision was the oppurtunity for travel and exposure to real-world contexts. The course offers site studies, case studies, live sketchind as well as trips, which gives us a chance to draw inspiration directly from environment. For someone who loves to travel and see the world through a designer's perspective, this course is ideal. Talking about the curriculum, which is strong as well innovative but there is a few areas I think could be improved. One chnage I would suggest is the shortening the course durstion. Architecture is a rigorous field, but some of the theory subjects feels a bit disconnected from the core focus of the program. Sreamlining these subjects and reducing the length of the course could make it more efficient without sacrificing the quality.

Fees and Financial Aid

Basically, Tuition fees for B Arch courses in all Self-financing colleges in India is 80,000.and the total fees vary according to the amenities provided by the college. About DC college of architecture and design,It's a residential campus ,so there is no other option like day schooling,PG's and all.We all have to stay in the college hostel and have to have the same canteen food. So,basically the fees will be almost similar. So, the Merit fee structure for an year is 1,98,000.where 80000 is the tution fees, 98000 is the hostel, canteen, laundry, etc. and the left amount is the text book, uniform, exam fees etc, which should be paid by everyone. Also, the fees for first year will be a little higher, due to 10000 caution, approx 2000 for the instruments and other accessories needed for drawing, etc. So, it will be 200000 or a little higher . The fees for an year should be paid by two times, which is semester wise 99000.There will be slight change in total amount every year due to canteen expense and all. And for schlolarship,The college doesn't provide any scholarship or reduction.but will help in getting our schlorship {gov or other private} if we ask for. The only students which receive scholarship here is the OEC category, because there tution fees will be covered by the scholarship expense,So,they only have to pay the food and accomodation fees. As for me, I got the national merit cum means scholarship in my first two years, later on they said, they stopped giving scholarship's for OBC students.

Campus Life

5

Campus life at DC college is really exciting because it's a 24/7 residential campus. This makes it easy to meet friends, chill with them, and spend quality time together whenever we want, which helps build a strong bond between classmates. There are several clubs for students like music, radio , design, photography, green environment clubs etc.but I think some clubs should be more active. While there are many oppurtunities to get involved, it's up to the students to make the most of them. The college also hosts big events like ANC, ZNZ and other all India fest like Luminance and all, which are fantastic to meet students from all over India. As the college is connected to DC books, we have access to great resources. There are two libraries-One for genereal use and another specifically for architecture, making it easy to find books and journals we need. In terms of sports, there are volleyball and football courts, which are great for staying active and have fun with friends. However I feel like it would be nice to have a seperate sport facility for girls at the girl's hostel , as some girls may feel shy about playing in campus.

Hostel Facilities

5

Since It is a residential campus, all students are required to stay on campus, even if they live nearby. We aren't allowed to rent rooms or stay in PG's or homes outside the campus. This is a strict rule, and everyone , regardless of how close they live, must stay within the campus. Actually this gives pros and cons to the students. Talking about hostel's, The girl's hostel is quite good , with two wardens ensuring everything is well maintained . Rooms are decent, with bunk beds, study tables, and cupboards and there are common washroomson each floors. However, the boys hostel is much worse . It's an old building , and the facilities are outdated and poorly maintained. Compared to the girls hostel, the buys hostel feels pathetic. The meal quality is average. There is a decent variety, but the taste is about 6 or 7 out of 10.The registration process for both hostel and canteen happens at the time of joining itself.

Admission

While choosing a college, my main priority was getting into this course rather than picking a specific college. I joined DC college as soon as after getting an allotment in the first round, as I didn't want to risk waiting or applying elsewhere. The college's serene climate in Wagamon was a bonus. I have also applied to other colleges but was offered a seat at DC college first, so I didn't have to deal with rejections. The admission process was smooth , and I met the NATA cutoff. The admission process in DC college is same as the other self -financing colleges in Kerala. I just needed to have completed 12th with physice, chemistry, and math with 75%. The main exam accepted was NATA, we could also enter through JEE MAIN, which tests design skills and general knowledge. The NATA cut off for my year was around 80-85 out of 200.and this will be added to your 12th percentage and the added final percentage is used in the allotment process and all. They also provide management seats for students. But qualifying NATA is compulsory.

Faculty

The faculty-student relation here is actually pretty good. The faculties are very friendly, approachable, and genuienly care about our success and growth. The campus is open 24/7, so faculty are always available to help with doubts or join design discussions when we needed, which is really valuable for our learning. Our academic structure includes semester wise exams, with the 7th semester dedicated to an internship and the 10th to a thesis, making it atotal of 8 university theory exams. There are also internal exams every semester to boost our grades. The main important part is thepractical learning through juries and hands-on projects, which is more imortant than the theory exams. Though the number of faculty is decreasing compared to when I first started, the current faculties are still very supportive and always willing to help when needed.

Night Life

5

The nightlife at campus is really good, mainly because the campus is open 24/7 open, which gives us the freedom to hang out and relax at any time. However, the college have a major drawback is that we can't leave the campus freely. We need an outpass even for something as simple as going home, which can feel a bit suffocating at times, especially when we're stuck looking at the same mountains all around. When I first joined , the hostel curfew was 11 PM, but now it's been moved to 9:30 PM with the new director. However, we can still get a night out if needed and permitted by concerned faculty. My personal hangout spot on DC is the space near the amphitheatre , which we call 'our square'. It's a nice place to relax ,feel and freshair, and chill with friends. Eventhough we can't leave the campus at night, many spots in campus makes it easy to unwind and enjoy the atmosphere.

Other Applied Colleges

KMEA College of Architecture | Bachelor of Architecture [B.Arch]

I had initially planned to attend here and some other colleges which is closer to my home, which would have mad transporting easier. However, my NATA score was insufficient to get a seat there. Also, another important reason in my decision was DC college'

Selection to B.Arch programme is based purely on merit. Selection will be done by SSA giving due weightage to the marks obtained in 10+2 examination and the NATA score. Merit is the only criterion for selection.

The College and College hostel won't let them use phones. Even though phones are allowed in hostels as per government rule. The College is a little strict and still treats us like school students. But the College is free in some terms but controlled a lot.
