Foreign universities in India are India-based campuses of overseas universities that award the home country’s degree. They are not tie-ups, twinning programmes or franchise arrangements.

Two separate rule books apply. Mainland campuses like Southampton in Gurugram sit under the UGC (Setting up and Operation of Campuses of Foreign Higher Educational Institutions) Regulations, 2023. GIFT City campuses like Deakin and Wollongong sit under the IFSCA (International Financial Services Centres Authority) framework of 2022.

The parent university sets the curriculum, hires the faculty and awards the final degree. Your marksheet reads Deakin University or University of Southampton, not an Indian body. This is the single biggest reason Indian students pick these campuses over a domestic private university.

Programme scope stays narrow for now. GIFT City campuses can only run STEM and finance courses, per IFSCA rules. Mainland UGC campuses have wider freedom but still start with business, computing and engineering. Full liberal arts catalogues are years away.

Key Insight: A GIFT City degree needs AIU attestation for any Indian government or PSU job. Mainland UGC campus degrees are recognised automatically for domestic use.

Intakes at foreign universities in India

Foreign universities in India follow their home country academic calendars, so intakes cluster in January, July, August and September. There is no common calendar across campuses.

Deakin at GIFT City runs two trimester intakes per year, January and July. Wollongong at GIFT City runs three: February, May-June and September-October. Southampton Delhi runs a single September intake, matching UK tradition.

New campuses set their first cohort dates as they launch. Queen’s University Belfast starts at GIFT City in January 2026. UNSW Sydney opens at Bengaluru’s Embassy Manyata Business Park in August 2026. University of Liverpool Bengaluru is accepting applications for August 2026.

How admission works at foreign India campuses

Admission to foreign universities in India is fully online and direct with each university. There is no CUET, no JEE and no central counselling.

Each campus runs its own portal, sets its own deadlines and takes its own call. If you want three campuses, you fill three applications. The good news: the checklist is short and the turnaround is 2 to 4 weeks.

Step by step process

1. Pick the campus and the course. Confirm the intake month first.
2. Create an account on the university India site (for example delhi.southampton.ac.uk or uow.edu.in).
3. Upload class 10 and 12 marksheets for UG, or the bachelor’s transcript for PG.
4. Upload your IELTS or TOEFL score. Check TOEFL eligibility rules if you plan to sit that test.
5. Add SOP, LORs and a resume for PG courses. Deakin MBA also asks for a GRE, GMAT, CAT or GATE score.
6. Pay the application fee. Southampton Delhi charges INR 2,000. Others range from INR 1,000 to INR 4,500.
7. Wait for the decision. Most campuses reply within 4 weeks.
8. Accept the offer and pay the deposit to hold your seat.

Key Insight: Southampton Delhi’s online form must be finished in a single session. Get every document scanned and saved before you start, or the form times out.

Some campuses interview you before making the final call. Deakin MBA runs a video interview. Others rely on marks and test scores alone.

Eligibility for foreign universities in India

Eligibility for foreign universities in India varies by campus, but every one asks for class 12 or a bachelor’s degree plus English proof. No campus asks for JEE, NEET or CUET scores.

Undergraduate cut-offs run tighter than most Indian private universities. Southampton Delhi needs 78% aggregate in class 12 for CBSE or ICSE, or 83% for state boards. Maths cut-off is 80% and English cut-off is 70% for the tech and business courses.

Undergraduate eligibility

• Class 12 pass from a recognised board, 60% to 78% aggregate depending on the university.
• Subject minimums in Maths, English or Science for related courses.
• IELTS 6.5 overall or TOEFL iBT 90, waived if class 12 was in English.

Postgraduate eligibility

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field from a recognised university, usually 55% or higher.
• GRE, GMAT, CAT, GATE, CMAT, SNAP, NMAT or XAT score for Deakin GIFT City MBA and analytics courses.
• Wollongong FinTech and Data Analytics ask for a bachelor’s and IELTS, no entrance test.
• IELTS 6.5 overall, 6.0 in each band, for every PG course unless waived.

Work experience is not compulsory for any PG course currently offered. But Deakin’s MBA and Wollongong’s FinTech Extension favour applicants with two or more years of relevant work. Freshers still get in, just less often.

Fees at foreign universities in India

Foreign universities in India charge between INR 10 lakh and INR 32 lakh for the full course. That is roughly half of what the same course costs at the parent campus abroad.

The savings do not include your living cost. Add INR 1.5 lakh to INR 3 lakh a year for hostel, food and travel in Gandhinagar, Gurugram or Bengaluru. GIFT City hostel packages fall on the higher end because the zone still has limited student housing.

Application fees, hostel deposits and one-time enrolment charges sit outside the tuition number. Southampton Delhi asks for INR 2,000 to process the form. Deakin charges around AUD 100 for the same. Factor in a 5 to 8% rupee buffer for future intakes since fees rise every year.

Loan-wise, HDFC Credila, Avanse, SBI Global Ed-Vantage and PNB Udaan all fund foreign university India campuses. Prodigy Finance does not fund India-based study currently. Check with the lender before locking the course. Compare course fits on the global MBA universities directory.

List of foreign universities in India 2026

Three foreign universities in India are teaching students in August 2026, and another 15 have approvals to open by 2027. The list keeps growing as UGC and IFSCA clear more Letters of Intent.

Operational campuses (teaching now)

• Deakin University, GIFT City (Gandhinagar): India’s first foreign university campus, opened January 2024. Offers MBA in Business Analytics and MBA in Cyber Security.
• University of Wollongong, GIFT City (Gandhinagar): Opened 2024. Offers UG in Business Analytics, PG in FinTech, Data Analytics and Applied AI.
• University of Southampton, Delhi (Gurugram): First Russell Group campus in India under mainland UGC route, opened August 2025. Offers BSc, BEng and MSc courses.

Scholarships at foreign India campuses

Every operational foreign university in India offers merit or need-based scholarships. Amounts range from a 25% tuition waiver to a INR 5 lakh flat cut.

Wollongong at GIFT City runs the High Achiever Scholarship for students with a GPA of 8.5 or above, giving 40% off tuition. A Merit Scholarship gives 25% off for lower GPAs. Women Leaders in FinTech scholarship covers 50% tuition for female applicants.

Bristol Mumbai runs a Founding Class Fellows scholarship worth up to INR 5 lakh per year, open to UG and PG applicants who apply before 15 May 2026. Aberdeen Mumbai will offer need-based scholarships for first-generation learners and rural students, plus separate achievement scholarships for sports, arts and community work. Deakin GIFT City offers early-bird fee waivers announced each intake.

• One application, two chances: Wollongong assesses you for both merit and equity awards automatically.
• Check if EMI plans exist: Southampton Delhi allows semester-wise tuition payments through partner banks.

Are foreign India degrees valid anywhere

Yes, degrees from foreign universities in India carry the same academic weight as the parent campus degree. Your Deakin GIFT City marksheet reads Deakin University, Australia. Your Southampton Delhi degree reads University of Southampton, United Kingdom.

For global recruiters and further study abroad, the degree is treated as equivalent. Deakin GIFT City’s first placement round in May 2025 saw 7 of 8 students placed at National Australia Bank’s India Innovation Centre. Global recruiters saw them as Deakin graduates, not India-branch graduates.

For Indian government jobs, PSU roles or state board equivalence, you need an AIU (Association of Indian Universities) attestation. GIFT City degrees always need this because they sit under IFSCA, not UGC. Mainland UGC campus degrees may skip AIU for domestic recognition.

What the India degree gives you

• Global degree recognition at par with the home campus.
• Alumni access to the parent university’s global network.
• Direct pathway to further study at the parent campus (some fee waivers apply).

What the India degree does not give you

• No post-study work visa for the UK, Australia or US. You reapply as a fresh international student.
• No automatic PR points in Australia, Canada or the UK.
• No home-country residency benefit. Your time in India does not count toward the parent country stay clock.

A foreign India campus wins on cost and family proximity, while a real overseas degree wins on work permit, migration and cultural exposure. The right call depends on why you are going.

Mistakes to avoid at foreign India campuses

The most costly mistakes with foreign universities in India come from wrong expectations, not wrong choices. Get the basics right before you pay any deposit.

• Assuming the India campus comes with a foreign work permit. It does not. You still need a fresh visa application to work in the home country.
• Skipping AIU attestation. If you plan any Indian PSU, UGC-NET or government job, get the attestation done right after graduation.
• Applying to only one campus. Each has separate deadlines and cut-offs. Apply to three at least.
• Ignoring the parent university’s global rank. The India campus rides the parent’s reputation. A low-ranked parent means a low-value degree.
• Missing the fine print on fees. Ask for the full-course fee, not the per-year sticker. Add hostel, deposit and one-time charges before comparing.

If a campus starts teaching without either clearance, the degree may not be recognised anywhere. This has not happened yet, but the rush of new applications makes it a real risk for 2026-27.
