University of Surrey MSc (Master of Science) Information Security, now named Cyber Security MSc, is a one-year, full-time degree at Stag Hill, Guildford. Relevant graduates need a UK 2:2 equivalent, meaning 55% or 60% in India depending on their university. For February 2027 entry, total overseas tuition is £25,900 (INR 32.76 Lakhs), with applications open to international students.

The programme combines cryptography, network security and governance with laboratory work and a supervised dissertation, making it suitable for applicants with programming and mathematics experience. Its technical and organisational breadth supports security specialisation, although applicants seeking a placement year must examine the separate September route.

  • The degree carries certification from the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre.
  • Teaching draws on research at the Surrey Centre for Cyber Security.
  • University careers guidance continues for three years after graduation.

Current Admission Status

Applications for the February 2027 intake are Open. International student deadline: 11 December 2026.

Indian applicants requiring a visa must meet offer conditions by 6 January 2027. Surrey can close applications early when sufficient suitable applications arrive.

February 2027 full-time overseas tuition is £25,900 (INR 32.76 Lakhs) for the one-year course. The September options have different prices and durations, so their advertised annual fees cannot substitute for the February total.

Tuition context: February is the target intake; the September 2027 figures below describe separately published alternatives.

  • For February overseas starters, current payment guidance requires 50% within ten days of the invoice and the remaining balance by 31 May.
  • February invoices are normally issued in late February or March, so arrange loan disbursement around invoice timing rather than the application deadline.
  • The two-year placement and part-time routes require additional living expenditure, while later-year fees remain subject to annual review.

The deposit amount and acceptance deadline are individual offer conditions, published through the applicant portal rather than a universal public tariff. Check the official tuition payment guidance alongside your offer before committing funds. A deposit is paid towards tuition, so adding it again to the total would overstate the course cost.

Cost of Living in Guildford for Information Security Students

Surrey publishes weekly budgeting inputs, including accommodation price endpoints and minimum spending allowances. The monthly figures below are calculated using 52 weeks divided by 12, with an illustration assuming accommodation that includes household bills.

Current published budgeting guidance: these are planning inputs, not a fixed February 2027 residence quotation or a guaranteed maximum spend.

ExpenseMonthly (GBP)Monthly (INR)
Rent, calculated from published weekly endpoints£387.83 to £1,352INR 49,061 to INR 1.71 Lakhs
Food, from£173.33INR 21,927
Travel, from£65INR 8,222
Books and stationery, from£21.67INR 2,741
Clothes, from£43.33INR 5,482
Mobile phone, from£21.67INR 2,741
Laundry, from£21.67INR 2,741
Calculated monthly baseline, using rent endpoints and other minimums£734.50 to £1,698.67INR 92,914 to INR 2.15 Lakhs
Calculated annual baseline, 52 weeks£8,814 to £20,384 annuallyINR 11.15 Lakhs to INR 25.79 Lakhs annually

The annual living illustration combines the published rent endpoints with minimum food, travel, stationery, clothing, phone and laundry allowances. For accommodation excluding bills, Surrey lists utilities from £30 weekly (INR 3,795), which must be added separately. Entertainment, optional television licensing and additional insurance are outside this baseline, so obtain your actual accommodation contract before selecting the lower endpoint.

A calculated all-in baseline is £36,436 to £48,006 (INR 46.09 Lakhs to INR 60.73 Lakhs), assuming 18 months of chargeable health cover. This adds tuition, the annual living illustration, the £558 Student visa fee (INR 70,587) and calculated health cover of £1,164 (INR 1.47 Lakhs). Health cover uses the published student rate of £776 yearly (INR 98,164) multiplied by 1.5; the visa portal determines your actual charge. Flights, excluded discretionary spending and any extra accommodation charges require additional funds, while scholarships are excluded from this calculation.

Key insight: February’s one-year tuition fixes the academic cost, but the official rent endpoints materially change the funding requirement. Secure a room quotation before fixing your loan amount.

Surrey MSc Information Security Admission 2027

February and September 2027 are the published intakes, with the February course available only full-time. Admission requires relevant technical preparation as well as an acceptable degree result, because cryptography and laboratory exercises build on programming and mathematics.

Academic requirements: Surrey’s current programme criteria apply alongside its published India-specific equivalencies.

RequirementPublished position for this course
Degree standardUK 2:2 honours equivalent; India: 55% or 60% overall undergraduate average depending on awarding institution.
Directly relevant subjectsComputer science, electrical or electronic engineering, mathematics, physics and related disciplines.
Alternative subject backgroundsRelated disciplines with demonstrable programming and mathematics exposure, including subjects connected to data analysis, data science or informatics.
Relevant work experienceConsidered when an applicant does not meet the standard academic requirements.

The 55% or 60% threshold depends on the Indian institution, so the lower figure does not apply automatically to every applicant. Surrey makes the official equivalency decision; submit your full transcript so admissions can assess both marks and technical subject coverage. Relevant work experience can support a non-standard application, but the programme publishes no fixed minimum number of employment years.

There is no listed management or graduate aptitude-test requirement on the checked programme and application pages. Surrey also publishes no course-specific acceptance rate or entering-class grade average there, so the academic minimum cannot establish admission odds. Use your statement to demonstrate relevant work, such as a secure application, network investigation or mathematically informed project.

English Language Requirements for Indian Applicants

IELTS Academic requires 6.5 overall, with 6.0 in writing and 5.5 in every other element. IELTS means International English Language Testing System, and the component thresholds must be satisfied alongside the overall score.

Surrey also accepts TOEFL iBT, meaning Test of English as a Foreign Language, internet-based test. Its current admissions page publishes separate new-system and old-system requirements, reproduced below without converting between scales.

English evidence: these rows match the course’s 6.5 overall IELTS requirement with its specific writing threshold.

Evidence routePublished requirement
IELTS Academic6.5 overall with 6.0 in writing and 5.5 in each other element.
TOEFL iBT, new system, 1.0 to 6.0 scale4.5 overall
Reading: 4
Listening: 4
Speaking: 4
Writing: 4
TOEFL iBT, old system, 0 to 120 scale88 overall

Speaking: 20
Writing 19
Pearson Test of English Academic67 overall; Reading 59, Speaking 59, Listening 59 and Writing 64.
Indian Standard XII English70% from CBSE or ISC boards; 80% from the majority of Indian state boards, subject to Surrey’s acceptance.

The school-English route can remove the need for a separate test, but Surrey reserves the right to request additional English evidence. CBSE means Central Board of Secondary Education, while ISC means Indian School Certificate. Submit the board certificate for assessment rather than assuming every state-board result qualifies.

  • Check writing separately because the course’s IELTS writing minimum exceeds its other component thresholds.
  • Use an in-person Pearson Academic test if choosing that route, because Surrey does not accept Pearson Academic Online.
  • Check your test date because Surrey requires IELTS, TOEFL and Pearson results achieved within the previous two years.

A degree taught and assessed fully in English may also satisfy Surrey when admissions accepts it as sufficient evidence. A university letter confirming the medium of instruction supports that assessment, but it does not establish an automatic waiver. Applicants below the language threshold can investigate Surrey’s pre-sessional provision before committing to the February document deadline.

Academic Fit and Course Preparation

The compulsory technical and governance mix means this course demands more than familiarity with security tools. Secure Systems and Applications addresses access control and software threats, while Cryptography develops mathematical foundations and Network Security includes practical protocol work.

For February starters, calendar semester order is reversed: spring covers modules labelled semester two, followed by semester one in autumn. Review network fundamentals before arrival because Network Security appears in the spring sequence. The dissertation requires independent investigation, a technical contribution and evaluation, so an applicant seeking only short certification training should examine that research commitment carefully.

Student perspective

One Information Security reviewer, enrolled in 2021 and writing in February 2026, valued both practical and theoretical learning but wanted less emphasis on theory. This individual observation supports reviewing laboratory and written assessments; the student reviews provide historical context for that decision.

These comments are anecdotal and do not replace official University of Surrey data.

Tip for Indian students: Surrey evaluates relevant subject preparation alongside institution-dependent Indian marks. Highlight programming and mathematics modules explicitly when your degree title does not make that preparation obvious.

Surrey MSc Information Security Application 2027

Apply by 11 December 2026 for February 2027, or 23 July 2027 for September 2027, using the overseas application option. Surrey publishes subsequent document and visa-sponsorship milestones, so submitting the application is only the first stage of the timetable.

Surrey issues a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) after the relevant offer and sponsorship checks. This electronic sponsorship record supports your Student visa application, making document completion and funding clearance essential before the published issue deadline.

International applicant milestones: both full-time intakes are open; the September placement alternative shares the September overseas application deadline.

The February final registration date is 19 February 2027, although Surrey advises arrival for the course start. The application pages publish dates without a portal cutoff time or timezone, so a precise Indian Standard Time conversion cannot be established. Confirm the cutoff through your portal and submit before the closing date rather than assuming Indian midnight applies.

There are no published selection rounds or fixed decision dates for this course, and the programme promises an initial response within 14 days. That response may request further information rather than contain an offer, so do not treat it as guaranteed admission. Surrey may close applications early after receiving sufficient suitable applications, which supports submitting a complete February application before the final deadline.

Build a Complete Technical Application

Surrey requires the application form and fee-status questionnaire before an application is considered complete. Start from the official Cyber Security MSc application options, selecting February 2027 full-time for the route discussed here. The current title also helps prevent confusion when your older research materials still say Information Security.

  • Upload signed or stamped transcripts and certificates, with English evidence and a passport copy where a visa is needed.
  • Provide two referees’ contact details and a personal statement connecting your technical preparation to Surrey’s security curriculum.
  • Complete the fee-status questionnaire and monitor the applicant portal for additional document or verification requests.
  • After an offer, coordinate the scholarship application and deposit before requesting sponsorship so funding decisions can be recorded before CAS issuance.

The programme publishes no universal interview stage, so follow any individual assessment instructions rather than assuming an interview is compulsory or excluded. For a non-standard academic background, explain how specific work experience addresses the programming and mathematics requirements. February applicants needing additional English preparation should check whether that route can finish before 6 January 2027; otherwise the September deadline creates a separate application option.

Application tip: February’s offer-condition deadline precedes its scholarship and sponsorship submission deadlines. Assemble academic and English evidence before applying so an offer can progress through those stages without a document bottleneck.

Surrey MSc Information Security Scholarships 2027

The International Excellence Award is the confirmed February 2027 scholarship route for eligible self-funded overseas applicants, including Indians. Surrey also publishes an early-payment discount and a conditional alumni discount, but their eligibility and combination rules differ.

Funding context: the Excellence Award explicitly names February 2027; the other two schemes are current published offers without an intake-specific deadline.

AwardPublished benefitINR equivalentEligibility, route and timing
International Excellence Award, postgraduate£5,000 tuition fee waiverINR 6.33 LakhsSelf-funded overseas applicant holding a full-time master’s offer; separate application by 8 January 2027 and before CAS issuance.
Early payment discount, current published£2,000 tuition fee waiverINR 2.53 LakhsEligible self-funded overseas full-time offer holder; automatic after the required deposit is paid through the portal within ten days of the offer.
Discounts for Surrey graduates, current published20% off tuition feesPercentage award; no fixed cash amountEligible self-funded Surrey undergraduate graduates progressing to a taught master’s; assessed automatically against alumni eligibility.

The Excellence Award is selected by a scholarship panel, with applications reviewed monthly and awards allocated on a first-come basis. Holding an offer and a valid student identifier is necessary before applying, and funding must be allocated before CAS issuance. Use the official International Excellence Award application after receiving your course offer, rather than waiting for the January cutoff.

  • Choose between Excellence and the early-payment discount because Surrey does not permit those two benefits to be combined.
  • Check the ten-day deposit trigger immediately after an offer, since the early-payment discount requires payment through the applicant portal.
  • Use the alumni route only if you meet Surrey’s undergraduate-study conditions, and confirm its permitted combination with the early-payment discount.

A successful Excellence Award would reduce calculated tuition to £20,900 (INR 26.44 Lakhs), using the February fee minus the published waiver. That calculation changes tuition only; it does not reduce your Guildford living expenses or visa costs. Because allocation is selective, retain the unsubsidised funding baseline until Surrey confirms the award in writing.

The alumni discount is not a general award for new Indian graduates, even though eligible international alumni can receive it. Surrey’s Future Leaders award also uses a restricted domicile list that does not include India, so Indian residence alone does not qualify. Applicants deferring an Excellence Award must reapply, making a switch from February to September a separate funding decision.

Scholarship reality: The Excellence Award must be allocated before CAS issuance, while the early-payment discount depends on a ten-day deposit trigger. Compare the applicable route before making an irreversible funding assumption.

Surrey MSc Information Security Salary 2027

Surrey publishes employer examples, but no course-specific salary or placement rate on the checked programme and careers pages. The current course page names Bosch, Ernst and Young, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, IBM UK and RGA Consulting as organisations where recent graduates secured jobs. It does not identify their graduating cohort, roles, salaries or sponsorship status, so those names establish reported employment rather than a hiring probability.

External Cyber Security Salary Benchmarks

The UK government’s 2026 cyber skills report provides external job-market evidence based on January to December 2025 advertisements. Its Lightcast dataset covers multiple experience levels, so the figures below are neither Surrey graduate salaries nor expected starting pay for this MSc.

External market scope: advertised annual gross salaries for core cyber roles; the salary sample contains 8,481 postings with reported pay.

External job-market measureAnnual gross GBPINR equivalent
UK median advertised salary, 2025£58,050INR 73.43 Lakhs
UK mean advertised salary, 2025£60,800INR 76.91 Lakhs
London mean advertised salary, 2025£70,200INR 88.80 Lakhs
South East mean advertised salary, 2025£59,300INR 75.01 Lakhs

Source: Cyber security skills in the UK labour market 2026, published 29 September 2026; Lightcast job postings for calendar year 2025.

76% of core cyber advertisements omitted salary information, which limits how representative the visible-pay sample can be. The London and South East figures describe different regional labour markets, rather than pay available automatically because Surrey is in Guildford. Screen actual vacancies for experience requirements, location and sponsorship before using any advertised salary in your funding assumptions.

Surrey’s laboratory work and dissertation offer material for demonstrating technical competence, but the February route does not include a placement year. For an applicant without prior security employment, this makes assessed projects and practical evidence particularly relevant to job applications. University careers guidance continues for three years after graduation, providing a support route for applications without establishing a course employment guarantee.

Take-home pay depends on tax, pension contributions and personal circumstances, so gross advertised salaries cannot be treated as disposable repayment income. Use the government’s Income Tax estimate service with an actual offer before setting a monthly loan repayment.

Return on Investment for Indian Applicants

The calculated unsubsidised baseline of £36,436 to £48,006 (INR 46.09 Lakhs to INR 60.73 Lakhs) includes the stated health-cover assumption. This investment is easier to justify when Surrey’s technical and governance curriculum addresses an identified skill gap, while repayment remains affordable without assuming UK market-average earnings.

  • The £25,900 tuition (INR 32.76 Lakhs) remains payable without UK employment, so test India-return repayment capacity against a written India-based salary estimate.
  • The 18-month Graduate visa window limits unsponsored job-search time, so fund a search reserve separately from the one-year study budget.
  • The selective £5,000 Excellence Award (INR 6.33 Lakhs) could reduce borrowing, so exclude that saving from committed finance until Surrey confirms it.
  • September’s placement route charges £28,200 (INR 35.67 Lakhs) in year one, so obtain a second-year budget before choosing its longer employment-experience route.

Student perspective

One Information Security graduate writing in May 2024 wanted more structured guidance on international job applications. This anecdotal observation supports arranging careers appointments early and checking what practical application support is available before relying on university assistance.

ROI reality: Surrey’s employer examples support career relevance, but they cannot establish a repayment period for the February MSc. Commit only when the unsubsidised budget remains viable under an India-return scenario.

UK Visa for Surrey MSc Information Security Students 2027

Indian applicants taking Surrey’s February 2027 full-time MSc normally require a Student visa supported by the university’s sponsorship record. The current Skilled Worker settlement route requires five years of qualifying residence and other conditions, so completing this taught master’s does not itself establish settlement eligibility.

  • The Graduate visa provides 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027, allowing eligible Surrey graduates to work or seek work without extending that visa.
  • Current outside-London maintenance is £1,171 monthly (INR 1.48 Lakhs), up to £10,539 (INR 13.33 Lakhs) for nine months, normally held for 28 consecutive days.
  • Skilled Worker sponsorship normally requires £41,700 annually (INR 52.75 Lakhs) or the occupation’s higher going rate, although specific reduced-salary exceptions may apply.
  • This taught MSc ordinarily cannot support new student dependants, although government-sponsored students on courses longer than six months may qualify for an exception.

Read More: UK Student Visa Requirements for Indians

Visa reality: The maintenance requirement proves eligible funds and is separate from Surrey’s living-cost illustration. Recheck the government requirement when applying, then fund the course using your actual Guildford accommodation costs.

Surrey MSc Information Security Ranking 2027

Surrey ranks 126 to 150 globally in Computer Science in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2026. The publisher’s UK subject table places Surrey joint tenth nationally, providing discipline-level context for applicants considering the February 2027 security master’s.

These positions assess Computer Science across the university, rather than ranking the Information Security or Cyber Security MSc separately. They can inform your assessment of the academic environment, but they do not measure this course’s international placement rate or salary. For a technical applicant, evaluate the subject ranking alongside the compulsory cryptography, network security and governance content before paying for a specialisation.

Check Out: Surrey Subject Rankings

Honest take: The verified ranking concerns Computer Science, while your MSc decision depends on the security curriculum and one-year February structure. Use the ranking as academic context rather than evidence of a job outcome.

Surrey’s Information Security MSc, now Cyber Security MSc, suits technically prepared applicants who want to connect secure-system engineering with organisational security decisions. Its laboratory work and dissertation support that combination, while February offers a shorter route without the separate placement year. The material tradeoff is committing substantial overseas funding without a published course salary or placement rate to establish repayment expectations. Check your institution-specific academic equivalency, submit the February application by 11 December 2026 and resolve scholarship eligibility before CAS issuance.

Surrey MSc Information Security FAQs

Ques. Is Surrey’s Information Security MSc mainly practical or theoretical?

Ans. It combines technical theory and practical work, including cryptographic foundations, network-security laboratories and a dissertation requiring an evaluated technical contribution. Applicants wanting only tool demonstrations should examine that research component, while programmers seeking deeper security reasoning have a clearer curriculum match.

Ques. Should I choose February entry or September with a placement?

Ans. Choose February’s one-year route when earlier completion matters and you can demonstrate relevant experience through existing work or projects. September’s separate two-year route adds placement access, but Surrey states that students must secure their own placement. Compare its extra tuition and living commitment with specific experience gaps rather than assuming the additional year produces a job offer.

Ques. Is Surrey’s MSc Information Security worth the cost for an Indian applicant?

Ans. The investment is more defensible when cryptography, systems security and governance address a defined skill gap and repayment remains affordable after an India return. Surrey’s employer examples show career access, but its unpublished course salary statistics cannot justify a predicted repayment period. Test affordability without a scholarship or immediate UK employment before accepting the offer.

Ques. Can a scholarship make Surrey’s February MSc fully affordable?

Ans. The Excellence Award is a partial tuition waiver, so housing, living expenses and immigration costs still require separate funds. It cannot be combined with the early-payment discount, and the award must be allocated before CAS issuance. Apply after receiving the course offer, then base borrowing on confirmed funding rather than adding incompatible discounts.

Ques. Can an Indian applicant take Surrey’s MSc without IELTS?

Ans. Potentially, because Surrey accepts specified Indian school-English evidence and may accept an English-taught degree with supporting documentation. Admissions must assess the board, marks and sufficiency of that evidence, and it can still request a test. Submit the evidence early enough to complete any additional testing before February’s offer-condition deadline.

  • I had opted for student accommodation. It was just absolutely amazing. I felt like living in a five-star hotel for a year. My flatmates were all so friendly and awesome. I had applied for the accommodation on the university website itself, and I had chosen Band D (Ensuite) as my preferred accommodation.
  • I got my room assigned at the Manor Park Campus, which was beautiful and the exact location I wanted to live in. All the facilities, like laundry, game room, sports complex, kitchen, and everything was included at the Manor Park accommodations. Just that it was a 15min walk from the main stag hill campus. But even that wasn't a problem since the local stagecoach buses used to go from Manor Park to Stag Hill and even beyond to the town centre. My living experience was just perfect and memorable.
