My Master's experience at the University of Surrey

Likes

Community is diverse and there always new you'll find and get to explore.
Facilities, lab facilities are nice, they had top of the line GPUs for training models
Safety was never a concern, did not have a single incident where I question my safety

Dislikes

Course can be found intense for beginners
Some modules could be more hands on than just theory
High living cost in Guildford

Scholarship

I got the early payment discount, for around 2000GBP reduced form the total. This is for students who pay the deposit within a short period after getting the offer.
There are other scholarships like the International Excellence Award which is merit-based, it gives 5000 tuition fee waiver and a GREAT scholarship for Indian applicant, with a minimum waiver of 10000 GBP

I chose off-campus accommodation. I found them on the university portal, there was no challenge in finding one. There are accommodations near the university building, like Band A or B. These were quite old, They have another set of building 10 mins walk away. These are newer and offer studio room and also ensuite rooms. I went with these, but I had to walk 10 to 15 mins everyday for lectures and labs.
They also support private companies like Scape for student accommodation. These places are expensive but very modern.

The cybersec department at the university is very good.
You get good practical as well as theoretical knowledge.

Yes, I received a £1000 scholarship for my course.
It was an Indian Bachelor Student Scholarship, the eligibility criteria was a Bachelor degree in B.E. or B. Tech. with a CGPA of 7 or more.
Some of my batchmates had taken student loans for their fees. Many others received the scholarship that I received, as well. On average, I am not sure about the exact number of students receiving a scholarship.

I had opted for student accommodation. It was just absolutely amazing. I felt like living in a five-star hotel for a year. My flatmates were all so friendly and awesome. I had applied for the accommodation on the university website itself, and I had chosen Band D (Ensuite) as my preferred accommodation.
I got my room assigned at the Manor Park Campus, which was beautiful and the exact location I wanted to live in. All the facilities, like laundry, game room, sports complex, kitchen, and everything was included at the Manor Park accommodations. Just that it was a 15min walk from the main stag hill campus. But even that wasn't a problem since the local stagecoach buses used to go from Manor Park to Stag Hill and even beyond to the town centre. My living experience was just perfect and memorable.

The student community in the college is diverse and inclusive.
There are multiple study spaces available across campus for students to work individually as well as in a group.
Student Union is present to handle all student queries, with dedicated departments for different concerns. The student union is appointed by the student with election held on campus.

Dislikes

The College is located in the outskirts of London which makes the accommodation cost comparatively low.
College ensuite accommodation is a little expensive with prices comparable to London accommodation.
There is no in-house student grocery store that offers student discounts; there is on-campus Co-op store which has the same pricing as regular Co-op branches.

Scholarship

Yes. I had 7000GBP sponsorship. 5000GBP for the international student award and 2000GBP from the agent.
The only eligibility criterion was being an international student. The college and the agent chose who to give this sponsorship to. I was considered based on my previous work experience.
A few of my batchmates received 5000GBP, but I do not remember anybody receiving another 2000GBP.

I chose to live on campus because it provided convenience, security, and quick access to university resources. Compared to external searches on sites like Zoopla, Rightmove, Facebook groups, or student accommodation sites, I got my room through the University of Surrey's official housing page, which made the process simple. As could be expected for ensuite university housing, the monthly fee was somewhat expensive, but the price included amenities like Wi-Fi, kitchen, heating, electricity, maintenance assistance, laundry access, and close proximity to the library and other campus buildings.
There are only a handful of desired room types, and that was one of the biggest obstacles because rooms fill up rapidly, and it was occasionally difficult to make a decision when comparing costs with off-campus options. I would advise future students to apply early, carefully compare all room types, and look into backup options from reputable student housing organisations as well as university housing. In my opinion, staying on campus as they are comparatively affordable than other options.
The majority of Indian students typically prefer to stay either on campus or in adjacent locations like Manor Park, Ash Grove, or Guildford town centre, depending on availability and expense. My accommodation was within a short walk from the college (approximately 1 minute), which saved a lot of traveling time.

Dislikes

Not anything specific to the University, but mainly related to finances (living costs, high grocery prices etc)

I lived in private accommodation throughout my PhD and found them using Bangor Student Pad and friends who lived there before. The monthly rent, including all bills, can range from £350 for a room in a shared house to over £700 for studio flats.

I got the academic excellence scholarship. There were two scholarships, one of 2k and one of 5k and 50 per percent of students got scholarships based on their past academic achievements and extracurricular activities.
I think work experience also helped in my case. I believe it all depends on how you write your proposal and how you describe yourself.

It was on-campus accommodation. I found it on their website only and it was cheaper than private. The monthly rent was 450 pounds. We got a personal room and shared a bathroom and kitchen. I would say for my university.
On-campus accommodation was cheaper than private but in London it’s the opposite. So I would say it is reliable as well, but in private you might face some fraud sometimes
