University of Leeds Eligibility for Indian Students
Leeds sets separate academic thresholds for undergraduate and postgraduate entry, and Indian applicants have a formal alternative to IELTS through their Standard XII English mark. Programs in engineering, business, and law layer subject prerequisites on top of the institution-wide requirement.
- UG general entry: Class XII at 75%, or 60 to 85% depending on program.
- UG subject-specific: 75 to 90% in the two subjects most relevant to your course.
- PG general entry: Bachelor’s at 60% (UK 2:1 equivalent) from a recognised Indian university.
- PG competitive programs: Bachelor’s at 65% (UK first class equivalent) in a relevant discipline.
English proficiency floors apply to every Indian applicant unless a formal waiver is met. The University of Leeds accepts a broad menu of tests, listed below with minimums.
| English Test | Undergraduate Minimum | Masters Minimum |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic (or UKVI) | 6.0 overall, 5.5 in each | 6.5 overall, 6.0 in each |

| PTE | 60 overall, 59 in each | 64 overall, 60 in each |
| Duolingo English Test | 110 overall, 95 in each | 120 overall, 105 in each |

University of Leeds IELTS Waiver for Indian Students
Indian applicants can skip IELTS if they meet either of these Standard XII English marks, per the university’s India equivalency page.
- CBSE and CISCE: Standard XII English at 70% or higher.
- Other State Boards: Standard XII English at 75% or higher.
- GCSE English: Grade C or 4 (or equivalent) also accepted in place of IELTS.
The waiver replaces IELTS 6.0 for undergraduate entry and IELTS score of 6.5 for masters entry. Standard X English is not accepted, since Standard XII English aligns closer to GCSE English content. Test results must be no older than two years on your course start date, and Leeds accepts IELTS One Skill Retake results.
Insider note: The India equivalency page is state-board specific. Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra boards need 75% while CBSE, CISCE, and West Bengal boards need 70% for the English waiver.

The 2026 international application deadline is Friday, 31 July 2026, and UK-based applicants have until Friday, 14 August 2026. The deadline to meet any conditions on your offer is 7 August 2026, 23:59 UK time. Scholarship candidates are shortlisted for an interview with the MBA Director, and Leeds recommends applying at least one month ahead of the deadline to secure scholarship consideration.
Insider note: Indian applicants with a three-year bachelor’s degree are accepted at Leeds MBA, but you should demonstrate strong career progression to offset the shorter degree pattern common in Indian universities. The Leeds full-time MBA does not permit deferrals. Confirm your intake timing before submitting on the myLeeds portal.
University of Leeds PhD Admission
PhD admissions at Leeds run on rolling deadlines that vary by school and funding stream. International tuition depends on your discipline band, and most Indian applicants target scholarship-funded routes because self-funded doctoral costs run into multi-year six-figure sterling totals (over INR 1.3 Cr).

Applicants build a research proposal aligned to an available supervisor’s interests, then submit through the myLeeds research portal with academic transcripts, a CV, two academic references, English proof, and a passport copy. The typical PhD duration is 3 to 4 years full-time, and Leeds notes that many funded programs run their own deadlines in November or January each academic year for the following autumn start.
Planning note: Contact a potential supervisor via email at least 2 to 3 months before your target application submission. Supervisor endorsement typically precedes formal application review.
University of Leeds Application Process
The application route depends on whether you are applying to an undergraduate, taught postgraduate, MBA, or research program. Each route has a different portal and a different set of parallel steps.

- Complete the application form with your personal, academic, and English-test details.

Contact study@leeds.ac.uk for portal-side technical issues. Applications on myLeeds auto-delete after 200 days if not submitted, so complete the form once you begin.

University of Leeds Acceptance Rate for Indian Students
Leeds does not publish an official institution-wide acceptance rate for Indian applicants. External estimates place overall admission likelihood at 50 to 65%, based on the ratio of enrolled to applied students across recent cycles.
University of Leeds Acceptance Rate by Level
Undergraduate admission via UCAS runs tighter for competitive subjects than masters entry. Data compiled across recent cycles suggests around 9 to 11% for medicine and dentistry, 40 to 50% for most other undergraduate courses, and 55 to 70% for masters entry when Indian applicants meet the published cutoff.
Insider note: Meeting the published minimum does not guarantee an offer. Business School and Engineering programs tend to prefer bachelor’s grades in the 65 to 70% band even where the floor is stated at 60%.
UK Student Visa for University of Leeds Applicants
Indian nationals need a UK Student visa (formerly known as Tier 4) to study at Leeds. You can apply from outside the UK up to 6 months before your course start date, and you cannot use the Child Student or Short-term Student routes for Leeds degree programs.
Leeds is outside London, so the financial maintenance requirement is £1,171 per month for up to 9 months. Total maintenance evidence needed is £10,539 (₹13.43 Lakhs) in addition to your first-year tuition, held in a personal or parental bank account for 28 consecutive days ending within 31 days of your online application. The Immigration Health Surcharge is £776 (₹98,924) per year of visa validity, paid upfront, and the standard visa application fee is £558 (₹71,133).
Standard UK visa processing takes 15 working days, and priority services are available for an added fee. You must complete biometrics at a VFS Global centre in India, book a tuberculosis test at an IOM-approved centre valid for 6 months, and carry a printed CAS reference from Leeds. On arrival in the UK you register with police within 7 days if your visa vignette carries that condition, and collect your Biometric Residence Permit within 10 days.
2026 update: The UK Home Office maintenance rates last changed in January 2025 and remain unchanged for 2026 filings. Budget for these plus first-year Leeds tuition when preparing your visa evidence.
Tips for University of Leeds Admissions
The following tips are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at University of Leeds across recent September intakes.
- Submit before 15 July 2026 to leave buffer for offer, deposit, and visa steps before the 28 September 2026 course start.
- Ask both your academic and professional referees to accept the myLeeds reference email in advance, since references are collected directly from referees.
- Check your Class XII English mark against the state-board waiver band before booking IELTS. CBSE and CISCE applicants at 70% already qualify.
- For the MBA, prepare 3 years of work experience letters and be ready to show clear management responsibility with progression evidence.
- Move your £2,000 (₹2.55 Lakhs) tuition deposit early rather than at the 21 August 2026 cutoff, so CAS issuance does not slip past your visa window.
- If your English marks are borderline, register for the Leeds Language Centre pre-sessional (6-week or 10-week) to secure a progression route.
Leeds runs one September intake for most degrees, with the September 2026 postgraduate window closing 31 July 2026 and the September 2027 UCAS undergraduate cycle opening 3 September 2026. Standard XII English at 70 to 75% is a formal IELTS waiver, cutting one exam off the Indian applicant path.

Dislikes
- It was difficult to get vegetarian food during events and social gatherings. While the situation might be different now, at least in Europe, vegan snacks is default.
- During my research, some of the engineering facilities across department required payments that and they were quite expensive.
- In general, the social gathering and community is not the most welcoming for non-drinkers.
Scholarship
- Leeds International Research Scholarship (LIRS): Full tuition fees and living expenses. Each year - five were awarded back then. Apart from this, the School of Geography (SoG) internal funding was available annually for small research grants. There were hardship allowances students could apply for if need be.
- None of my batchmates received the LIRS fellowship, though SoG research bursaries were more commonly awarded.

- The faculty, students were for the most part friendly and willing to help students from every background get in-tune with British culture, including volunteering and work experience.
Dislikes
- The one thing I dislike is probably a lack of reaching out done by the University for students with mental health issues, I do feel it's something that the university could've done better, because there are varying factors that contribute to a student being down (a bad job market, their own personal reasons, etc.)

- It was a decent experience in terms of academics.
Dislikes
- When it comes to getting a job, I was on my own.
- Unlike India, I had to approach recruiters and HRs for applications. There is no concept of campus placement or any help form the College for securing a job.

- State of the Art Libraries
Dislikes
- Conducted no site visits which was most needed for the course
Likes
- One thing I really liked about my course at the University of Leeds was the frequency of networking and workshop events available to attend in a one-year course. These events not only helped students to connect with faculty outside course but provided a great platform to learn more about the current job market with discussions on relevant openings and trends.
Dislikes
- On the flip side, one thing I did not like much about the course was the short duration which meant there was lesser time to get started with academics and life in a new country while simultaneously stressing about the job market with early applications. Ideally, I would have loved to see more personal skills and networking based tasks involved in the curriculum but understand the limitations in a one-year course.
Dislikes
- We get generic career fairs no real help with securing jobs or internships.
