University of Sunderland admissions run mostly through direct online applications for postgraduates and UCAS for undergraduates, with UG entry set at Class XII around 60% and PG entry at a Bachelor’s around 55 to 60%.

  • The next primary intake is September 2027, with the UCAS equal-consideration deadline on 13 January 2027; direct PG applications run rolling year-round.
  • Base tuition sits at £17,500 (INR 22.34 Lakhs) for UG and £16,500 to £19,000 (INR 21.06 to 24.25 Lakhs) for PG; UCAS charges its own £34.50 (INR 4,495) application fee for UG, and Sunderland levies no direct-application fee.
  • UG needs Class XII around 60% with IELTS 6.0 overall; PG needs a Bachelor’s around 55 to 60% with IELTS 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0).
  • Acceptance rate is estimated at 60 to 65%, as the university does not publish an official institutional figure.

Popular Indian-applicant choices at University of Sunderland include the International MBA, MSc International Business Management, and MSc Information Technology Management.

Admission Status: Open. The September 2026 primary intake is late-cycle. UCAS main-cycle applications for that intake closed on 30 June 2026, but Sunderland continues to accept direct international applications via myApplication where courses have space, and the January 2027 intake is open on a rolling basis.
The next full primary window is September 2027, with the UCAS equal-consideration deadline on 13 January 2027. Sunderland charges no application fee for direct applications; UCAS charges its own service fee of £34.50 (INR 4,495) for UG applicants.

Table of Contents

University of Sunderland Application Deadlines for Indian Students

Sunderland operates two main intakes each year: September (the primary intake, where most programs open) and January (a secondary intake covering a smaller subset of PG programs). Undergraduate applicants use UCAS (institution code S84), while postgraduates and most international applicants apply directly through the myApplication portal. Direct applications are read on a rolling basis and typically stay open until each course fills.

The table below is dated per the Sunderland international how-to-apply page and the UCAS 2027 cycle calendar.

Intake Level Applications Open Deadline
Primary intake September 2026 UG (UCAS) (Closed) UCAS main round closed 30 June 2026; Late/Clearing entries reviewed if seats remain
Primary intake September 2026 PG (direct) Rolling Rolling; usually accepted until August 2026 if seats remain
January 2027 UG and PG (direct) Open Rolling; typically closes late November 2026
Primary intake September 2027 UG (UCAS) September 2026 13 January 2027 (equal consideration)
Primary intake September 2027 PG (direct) November 2026 Rolling through mid-2027
January 2028 UG and PG (direct) Opens April 2027 Rolling; typical close late November 2027

Planning note: Because Sunderland uses rolling review, an early September-2027-intake application submitted in October 2026 will usually see an offer letter within four to six weeks, well before UCAS’s 13 January cutoff.

University of Sunderland Eligibility for Indian Students

Sunderland’s eligibility is access-oriented, meaning it admits most applicants who meet its stated academic and English requirement. Indian applicants are assessed on Class XII marks for undergraduate entry and Bachelor’s percentage for postgraduate entry, with programme-specific subject requirements layered on top.

Key academic minimums per the Sunderland international entry requirements page:

  • UG general entry: Class XII at 60% or above from a recognised Indian board (CBSE, ICSE, or State).
  • UG competitive courses: Class XII at 65 to 70% for Law, Pharmacy, and Nursing.
  • PG taught entry: Bachelor’s at 55 to 60% (a UK 2:2 honours), in any discipline unless the course specifies a subject prerequisite.
  • MBA and specialist Master’s: Bachelor’s at 55% plus 2+ years of relevant work experience for the International MBA.
  • PhD entry: Master’s in a related field, usually at 60% (UK 2:1 merit), plus a research proposal.

Sunderland accepts a wide range of English proficiency evidence:

Test UG Minimum PG Minimum
IELTS Academic (UKVI or standard) 6.0 overall, no band below 5.5 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0
TOEFL iBT 72 overall (4 band in the new scoring pattern) 88 overall (4.5 band in the new scoring pattern)
PTE Academic 51 overall 59 overall, no band below 59
Duolingo English Test 95 overall 110 overall
Cambridge C1 Advanced / C2 Proficiency 169 overall 176 overall

University of Sunderland IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

Sunderland does accept an IELTS waiver from Indian applicants on two grounds.

First, applicants whose Class XII English was studied in an English-medium school with a mark of 70% or higher may submit their Class XII certificate in place of IELTS, provided the certificate is issued within five years of the course start date.

Second, applicants who have completed a prior Bachelor’s or Master’s degree taught and assessed in English at a recognised Indian institution may submit a signed Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter from that institution. Both routes are confirmed on a case-by-case basis by the International Admissions team.

Insider note: If your Class XII English mark is between 60 and 69%, do not assume the waiver is automatic. Sunderland’s admissions team consistently requests IELTS in borderline cases, so budget six weeks for a test booking before your intended submission date.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Sunderland entry requirements page for your chosen program before applying.

University of Sunderland Postgraduate Programs for Indian Students

For the complete course-wise fees breakdown, refer to the Sunderland Fees page.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official University of Sunderland page for your chosen program before applying.

University of Sunderland Undergraduate Programs for Indian Students

Undergraduate degrees at Sunderland are typically three years full-time (four with a Foundation Year or Sandwich Placement). International base tuition is £17,500 per year (INR 22.34 Lakhs) for 2026-27 for most programs; Pharmacy runs at £20,000 (INR 25.53 Lakhs) and Occupational Therapy accelerated at £24,000 (INR 30.63 Lakhs). Indian applicants without the direct entry Class XII marks can access a one-year International Foundation Programme via ONCAMPUS Sunderland that progresses to Year 1 on completion.

Programme Duration Minimum Eligibility English Req. Min.
BEng Automotive Engineering 3 years Class XII 60%+ with Mathematics and Physics IELTS 6.0
BA Business and Management 3 years Class XII 60%+ in any stream IELTS 6.0

University of Sunderland MBA Admissions

Sunderland runs an International MBA across its Sunderland and London campuses, plus an online variant through online.sunderland.ac.uk. The full-time MBA is a 12-month program. There is no GMAT or GRE requirement for Indian applicants, and interviews are conducted only where the admissions team wants to clarify a work-experience gap.

Variant Duration Work Experience Base Tuition (2026-27)
International MBA (Sunderland / London) 12 months full-time 2+ years post-Bachelor’s work experience £19,000 (INR 24.25 Lakhs)
Online MBA 18 to 30 months part-time 2+ years relevant experience Priced per module; confirm on offer letter

What is the MBA entry route without a Bachelor’s?

The Sunderland MBA also considers applicants without a degree if they hold 5+ years of managerial work experience, evidenced through a detailed CV and a manager reference. This is an active pathway and not a formality; the admissions panel reviews decision-making evidence in the CV closely.

Sunderland MBA English and Fee Notes

English requirement is IELTS 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5, one tier below the standard PG floor. Fees are paid in two instalments after enrolment: 50% before CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) issue and the remainder in January of the study year.

Insider note: The London-campus MBA has a higher share of Indian classmates than the Sunderland campus, and the January intake at London consistently fills earlier than September. Target November 2026 for a January 2027 London-campus MBA seat.

University of Sunderland PhD Admissions

Sunderland offers MPhil and PhD research degrees across its Faculty of Business, Law and Tourism; Faculty of Technology; and Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellbeing. Full-time PhDs take three to four years, with a taught research-training component in Year 1.

Steps for Indian PhD applicants:

  • Identify a supervisor from the faculty research page and email a 2 to 3 page proposal for informal alignment.
  • Submit the formal application via myApplication with a full proposal (around 2,000 words), transcripts, CV, two academic references, and IELTS.
  • Attend an online interview with the proposed supervisor and a second reader.
  • On acceptance, confirm funding: self-funded, Sunderland studentship, or external sponsorship.

Entry needs a Master’s at UK 2:1 equivalent (Indian around 60 to 65%) in a related subject, plus IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. Sunderland PhD tuition for international students is set per project; expect around £16,500 (INR 21.06 Lakhs) per year for 2026-27 based on the general PG range.

Planning note: Sunderland does not run a fixed PhD deadline. However, faculty-funded studentships open in October 2026 and February 2027 for the September 2027 start, and those calls close in about 6 weeks each.

University of Sunderland Application Process

The application flow differs by level. UG candidates submit through UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, the UK’s centralised UG application system) using institution code S84. PG, research, and most international PG candidates submit through myApplication, the university’s direct portal.

  1. Choose your course and campus. Confirm whether the course runs at Sunderland City Campus, London (Canary Wharf), or an online delivery, since fees and CAS routes differ.
  2. Create your account on the Sunderland myApplication portal or on ucas.com for undergraduate courses.
  3. Upload documents: transcripts, degree certificates, CV, SOP (Statement of Purpose), two references, IELTS or waiver evidence, passport bio page, and any portfolio required.
  4. Submit and pay any application fee: Sunderland charges no application fee on direct submissions, while UCAS charges its own £34.50 (INR 4,495) for 2027 entry as service fee for UG applicants at the point of submission on the UCAS portal.
  5. Track your application: the portal issues a reference number, username, and password to monitor status.
  6. Respond to your offer: conditional offers usually land within four to six weeks. Meet the conditions, pay the 50% tuition deposit required for Indian students, and receive your CAS to begin your visa application.

Sunderland Admission Decisions Timeline

Sunderland issues conditional offers within 4 to 6 weeks of a complete submission during off-peak windows and 6 to 8 weeks in December to February. Applicants have 28 days to accept a conditional offer. Deferral is granted once, to the next matching intake, on written request through myApplication, provided visa timelines still work.

University of Sunderland Documents Required

All documents must be uploaded as clear PDF scans (colour, single-page or continuous, under 5 MB each) at the time of submission. The admissions team will not review a partially uploaded file, so complete your set before hitting submit.

  • Valid passport bio page (minimum 6 months of validity from your intended start date).
  • Class X and Class XII marksheets and certificates for UG applicants.
  • Bachelor’s transcript and provisional or final degree certificate for PG applicants; Master’s transcript for PhD.
  • Statement of Purpose (SOP), 500 to 800 words.
  • Two academic or professional references on institutional letterhead.
  • Updated CV for PG, MBA, and PhD applicants.
  • IELTS or accepted English test score report, or the MOI letter and Class XII English certificate for waiver claims.
  • Work-experience letters for MBA and MA Education applicants (specifying role, dates, and responsibilities).
  • Portfolio for Art, Design, Fashion, and Media UG programs.
  • Financial proof (bank statement or sponsor letter covering the 50% deposit before CAS).

University of Sunderland Acceptance Rate

Sunderland does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Third-party estimates cluster at 60 to 65%, based on Sunderland’s access-oriented admissions posture and its transparent minimum thresholds. Indian-applicant patterns visible on Sunderland’s student reviews suggest that complete, well-documented direct applications from India that clear the stated Class XII / Bachelor’s requirement and the English requirement are typically accepted.

What Drives Sunderland Admission Outcomes for Indian Students?

The three drivers Indian applicants see rejected on:

  • English shortfall: IELTS 5.5 overall when 6.0 is needed for UG (or 6.0 vs 6.5 for PG), even with a strong academic profile.
  • Missing subject prerequisites: a BSc Computer Science application without Class XII Mathematics, or a BEng without Physics.
  • Incomplete SOP or missing references for PG and PhD, leading to auto-decline rather than a query.

UK Student Visa for University of Sunderland Applicants

Indian students studying at Sunderland need the UK Student visa (formerly Tier 4), which is applied for from India through the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) portal after you receive your CAS from Sunderland. The visa fee from outside the UK is £558 (INR 72,701), and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS, the annual NHS access charge for international students) is £776 per year (INR 99,048) at the current 2026 rate.

Financial proof for the visa must show you can cover the first year of tuition (or the remaining balance after the 50% deposit) plus £1,171 (INR 1.52 Lakhs) per month for up to 9 months of maintenance for study outside London, or £1,529 (INR 1.99 Lakhs) per month for the London campus. Funds must sit in your primary account or a parent-sponsor account for at least 28 consecutive days before you file the visa application. Book your biometrics appointment at a VFS Global centre in India, and expect a decision within 15 working days for the standard service.

2026 update: The UK’s Graduate Route remains open for Sunderland alumni, giving a 2-year post-study work visa (3 years for PhD graduates) to work or look for work in the UK. This still applies for September 2026 and September 2027 intakes.

Tips for University of Sunderland Admissions

The following tips are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Sunderland and the review threads on Collegedunia and third-party portals.

  • Apply direct, not UCAS, for undergraduate courses if you missed the 30 June 2026 UCAS window and want to hold September 2026 open.
  • Claim the tuition reduction upfront: mention on-campus study in your application to lock in the £1,400 UG (INR 1.79 Lakhs) or £900 PG (INR 1.15 Lakhs) reduction.
  • Get MOI on institutional letterhead signed by your Registrar, not a departmental head, to speed the IELTS waiver review.
  • Choose the London campus only if you need denser Indian networks and can budget the higher maintenance funds of £1,848 per month (INR 2.36 Lakhs).
  • Pay the 50% deposit within a week of your unconditional offer to move to CAS ahead of the visa queue.

Sunderland’s admissions posture rewards Indian applicants who move deliberately: hit the stated Class XII or Bachelor’s floor, secure IELTS 6.0 or 6.5, and use direct applications to bypass the UCAS timeline for postgraduate seats. Add the MOI waiver where eligible, and target the September primary intake for the fullest course choice.

Overview

My teacher at the college suggested this university for me. I knew that teachers were helpful, and because when I was young I had many difficulties succeeding with my studies, I thought that I should choose a university that was not too demanding and supportive. When I started at the University of Sunderland in London, I was impressed by the various activities the institution offered. Also, the university has many departments for students to help them with various enquiries and assistance. For example, one of them is the department of health and well-being. The university engages in many activities such as conferences, trips, and events. Many societies organised by students with the help of the university deliver many activities that provide a better social environment. In fact, the tourism and travel society organises trips for students across the UK and abroad. Also, sports societies are available at the university, such as a dance club, swimming, football, and more, for active students. So far, being a student at the University of Sunderland in London has been a unique experience! The institution collaborates with the University of Sunderland in Hong Kong. The university is definitely multicultural. I made many friends, starting from Indians and Asians to Europeans, Africans, and South Americans. There are many employment events where students can meet potential employers for opportunities such as internships and work experience with important companies.
