Durham University admissions run through a September-led Michaelmas cycle, with UG applications routed via UCAS and PG taught programmes processed on Durham’s own portal on a rolling basis. Indian applicants need Class XII at 80 to 89 percent for UG and a Bachelor’s at 60 to 65 percent from a UGC-recognised university for PG taught entry, plus a valid English test score in almost every case.

  • Next live deadline: PG taught September 2027 intake is rolling on Durham’s portal with a final close of 31 July 2027; UCAS equal consideration for September 2027 UG closes 13 January 2027.
  • Base tuition: from GBP 28,500 (around INR 36.82 Lakhs); PG taught application fee GBP 60 (around INR 7,752), UG UCAS application fee GBP 28.95 (around INR 3,740).
  • Eligibility floor: UG needs Class XII 80 percent plus and IELTS 6.5; PG taught needs a Bachelor’s at 60 percent plus with the same IELTS 6.5 baseline.
  • Acceptance rate: institutional intake sits at roughly 40 percent, with a UCAS offer rate near 72 percent.

Popular routes for Indian students are the MSc Finance suite, MSc Data Science, MSc Management, and the LLM programmes; peer feedback on Durham University flags the collegiate system and Russell Group teaching quality but notes competitive PG shortlisting for Business School courses.

Admission Status. Open. The primary September 2027 (Michaelmas) intake is accepting applications: PG taught programmes run rolling until 31 July 2027 on Durham’s online application portal, UG applications flow through UCAS with the equal consideration deadline on 13 January 2027, and the full-time MBA opens Round 1 on 1 November 2026. The PG taught application fee is GBP 60 (around INR 7,752); UG applicants pay the UCAS fee of GBP 28.95 (around INR 3,740).

Durham University Application Deadlines for Indian Students

Durham University runs one main September (Michaelmas) intake per year, with a limited January intake for selected PG taught programmes. Dates below are drawn from the official Durham international entry-requirements page and the postgraduate taught application guidance. Durham’s primary intake for Indian students is September (Michaelmas) — most UG and PG programmes open here.

Planning note: Durham’s PG rolling window means popular Business School courses can hit programme-level caps months before 31 July 2027. Apply by December 2026 for the best shortlist odds.

  • Michaelmas start: teaching begins late September 2027 across UG and most PG taught programmes.
  • January PG intake: only a handful of Durham PG taught programmes accept a January 2027 start, so check the individual programme page.
  • UCAS window: Durham accepts UG applications only through UCAS for the September cycle, never directly.

Durham University Eligibility for Indian Students

Durham publishes an India-specific country page listing accepted qualifications, percentage bands, and English proficiency floors. The requirements below are the institution-wide baseline for Indian applicants — several programmes ask for higher marks or higher English scores.

Academic Requirements for Indian Applicants

  • UG general entry: Class XII CBSE or ISC at 80 to 89 percent, subject-specific.
  • UG competitive courses: 85 to 90 percent for Law, Economics, Computer Science, and Business.
  • UG state board: case-by-case, usually 5 percent higher than CBSE or ISC.
  • PG taught standard: Bachelor’s at 60 to 65 percent from a UGC-recognised university, mapping to a UK 2:1.
  • PG taught competitive: 65 percent plus for MSc Finance, MSc Data Science, and MSc Management routes.
  • Three-year Indian Bachelor’s: accepted for PG taught entry at Durham without a top-up year.

Durham University IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

Durham does not grant an English test waiver on the basis of Medium of Instruction or Class XII English marks. The only route Indian applicants can use without a test score is prior study for at least one year at degree level in a majority-English-speaking country, evidenced by an official transcript. In practice, most Indian applicants must submit a valid IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or Duolingo result taken within two years of the intended start date.

Insider note: Book the higher IELTS 7.0 with 6.5 in each band even if your programme lists 6.5, because Durham reads borderline sub-scores strictly on CAS issue.

Note: Programme-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Durham University India country page for your chosen programme before applying.

Durham University PG Programs and English Scores

Durham’s PG taught catalogue spans Business School, Law, Humanities, Sciences, and Social Sciences. International tuition for PG taught programmes in 2026 to 2027 ranges from GBP 28,500 (around INR 36.82 Lakhs) for arts and humanities to GBP 41,000 (around INR 52.97 Lakhs) for the MBA — this article covers base tuition only, and the full course-wise fees breakdown lives on the Fees page.

Durham reads Indian three-year Bachelor’s degrees at par with UK three-year Bachelor’s, which removes a common blocker Indian applicants face at some UK universities.

Note: Programme-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Durham University tuition fees page for your chosen programme before applying.

Durham University UG Programs for Indian Students

Undergraduate applications for September 2027 entry are filed through UCAS. Durham’s UG international tuition for 2026 to 2027 sits between GBP 28,500 (around INR 36.82 Lakhs) and GBP 31,000 (around INR 40.05 Lakhs), with lab and clinical courses at the upper end. Fees for 2027 to 2028 are typically confirmed by January 2027.

Durham does not accept direct UG applications outside UCAS. Indian students file one UCAS form for up to five UK universities, and the UCAS personal statement counts more than an SOP at most UK peers.

Durham University Full-Time MBA Admissions

The Durham Business School full-time MBA is a 12-month Michaelmas-start programme with rolling rounds. Tuition for 2026 to 2027 is GBP 41,000 (around INR 52.97 Lakhs), and the application fee is GBP 60 (around INR 7,752).

Durham MBA Eligibility for Indian Applicants

  • Bachelor’s: 60 percent plus in any discipline.
  • Work experience: minimum 3 years full-time post-graduation.
  • GMAT or GRE: optional, but a GMAT of 600 plus strengthens the shortlist.
  • English: IELTS 7.0 with 6.5 in each band, or TOEFL iBT 102, or PTE 68.
  • Interview: compulsory for shortlisted candidates, held online via Microsoft Teams with a Durham MBA admissions panel.

Insider note: Durham’s MBA interview leans on career narrative and Business School fit, not on case questions — Indian applicants with a clear post-MBA plan and a mid-management story shortlist strongly here.

Note: MBA entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the figures shown above. Always confirm on the official Durham MBA how-to-apply page before applying.

Durham University PhD Admissions Guide

Durham offers doctoral routes across all faculties, with international PhD tuition for 2024 to 2025 between GBP 19,500 (around INR 25.19 Lakhs) and GBP 26,500 (around INR 34.24 Lakhs) depending on discipline. 2027 to 2028 rates are typically confirmed by early 2027.

Durham PhD Application Steps for Indian Candidates

  • Identify a supervisor: browse the relevant Durham department’s staff pages and email a proposal-fit query before applying.
  • Draft the research proposal: 1,500 to 3,000 words covering aims, method, literature, and feasibility.
  • Apply online: submit through Durham’s postgraduate research application portal with transcripts, CV, and two academic references.
  • Funding search: apply for Durham Doctoral Studentships and external routes in parallel — internal deadlines fall in January 2027 for October 2027 start.

Durham Doctoral Studentships and Northern Bridge partnerships cover full fees plus a stipend at UKRI levels for eligible awardees. Programme-linked funding is listed on individual department pages; general amounts and applicability sit on the Durham scholarships and funding hub.

Planning note: Contact supervisors 4 to 6 months before you plan to apply. A named supervisor on your application file is the single strongest signal Durham’s PhD admissions read.

Note: PhD entry requirements, fees, funding amounts, and intake availability may differ across departments. Always confirm on the official Durham University postgraduate page for your chosen department before applying.

Durham University Application Process Step by Step

The application route depends on your level. UG applicants use UCAS; PG taught, MBA, and PhD applicants use Durham’s own online application portal. The steps below cover PG taught, the most common Indian route.

  1. Register on the Durham online application portal for PG taught, or file via UCAS if you are applying to a UG course.
  2. Choose your programme and start term, naming a September 2027 or January 2027 entry where the programme runs one.
  3. Pay the application fee of GBP 60 (around INR 7,752) on the Durham online application portal, or the UCAS fee of GBP 28.95 (around INR 3,740) for UG.
  4. Upload transcripts and certificates for Class X, Class XII, and Bachelor’s along with mark sheets.
  5. Submit the SOP and two academic references, uploaded directly by referees to the portal.
  6. Attach the English test score report and passport bio page.
  7. Track the offer decision — Durham typically responds within 4 to 8 weeks for PG taught, and issues a conditional or unconditional offer letter.
  8. Accept the offer, pay the tuition deposit, and request the CAS once conditions are met; the CAS is required for the UK Student visa.

Before you apply: Durham accepts references from your Head of Department or Programme Director rather than any faculty member — a signed letter on institutional letterhead reduces reference-authentication back-and-forth.

Durham University Documents Required for Indian Applicants

Durham’s document list is standard across PG taught programmes, with programme-level additions for portfolio and interview courses. Upload scans in PDF form to the application portal.

  • Passport: valid bio page, at least 6 months beyond intended arrival.
  • Class X and Class XII mark sheets and pass certificates.
  • Bachelor’s degree transcripts for all completed semesters, plus provisional or final degree certificate.
  • Statement of Purpose of 500 to 1,000 words tied to the specific Durham programme.
  • Two academic references on letterhead, uploaded by referees directly to the portal.
  • CV or resume covering education, work, projects, and awards.
  • English test score report — IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, or Duolingo, taken within 2 years.
  • Work-experience letters for MBA applicants, confirming 3 plus years full-time roles.
  • Research proposal for PhD applicants only.
  • Financial evidence at CAS stage, showing tuition plus 9 months of maintenance for the visa.

Note: Durham may request WES or ECCTIS equivalency for state board Class XII marks in borderline cases, so plan an extra 3 to 4 weeks for that verification.

Durham University Acceptance Rate for Indian Students

Durham’s UCAS offer rate for the 2023 to 2024 cycle sat at roughly 72 percent, based on 23,657 offers issued against 32,995 applications. The institutional intake rate — offers that convert to enrolments — is closer to 40 percent after firm and insurance choices flow through UCAS. Durham’s QS 2026 ranking band at world number 94 explains the competitive shortlisting in Business School and Law programmes.

Acceptance Rate by Route

  • UG UCAS: around 72 percent offer rate overall, dropping to 50 percent or lower for Law, Economics, and Computer Science.
  • PG taught: mid-band around 40 to 50 percent, with MSc Finance and MSc Management shortlisting more tightly.
  • MBA: selective, with three years of relevant work experience acting as a hard filter.

What Improves Indian Applicant Odds at Durham

Class XII at 88 percent plus, a Bachelor’s at 65 percent plus for competitive PG courses, an IELTS score with no sub-band below 6.5, and a programme-specific SOP together push applicants well above the average shortlist band. The Indian enrolment share sits around 30 to 40 percent of the international intake, so Durham processes Indian files at scale.

Insider note: Applying in the first 8 weeks of the PG rolling window (September to November 2026 for the September 2027 intake) is the single largest factor Indian applicants control, ahead of tenth-of-a-percent GPA differences.

UK Student Visa Process for Durham University

Indian students entering Durham need the UK Student visa (previously Tier 4). The route requires a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) issued by Durham after the applicant accepts the offer and clears conditions. Standard processing runs 15 working days from a UK visa application centre in India, and Durham asks students to arrive at least a week before enrolment.

Applicants file on GOV.UK, upload the CAS reference, evidence of tuition plus 9 months of maintenance funds (around GBP 12,006 to GBP 13,347 or about INR 15.51 to 17.24 Lakhs, held for 28 consecutive days), and complete the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS — a prepaid annual NHS access fee) alongside the visa fee. Biometrics happen at a VFS centre. Once in the UK, students collect a Biometric Residence Permit or activate the eVisa on arrival and register with Durham’s international check-in.

2026 update: The UK is transitioning to eVisas — most Indian students receiving a Student visa from 2026 onwards will use the UKVI digital eVisa system instead of a physical BRP card. Keep your UKVI account credentials safe.

Tips and Application Checklist for Durham University

The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Durham University over recent Michaelmas cycles.

  • Apply early in the PG rolling window: file between September and December 2026 for September 2027 entry to avoid programme-level caps at Business School.
  • Draft the SOP programme-specific: tie every paragraph to Durham’s collegiate structure, chosen module list, and research groups — a generic UK-wide SOP reads weak here.
  • Request transcripts 8 weeks before submission: Indian universities take 4 to 6 weeks to issue mark sheets in the required format.
  • Book IELTS 10 to 12 weeks ahead: Durham accepts IELTS One Skill Retake, so plan a re-sit window before the CAS request.
  • Line up two academic references: confirm both referees’ institutional emails and give them the programme link 3 weeks before the deadline.
  • Prepare finances by April 2027: the 28-day fund-holding rule for the visa needs statements dated within 31 days of visa submission.
  • Accept the offer within the stated window: Durham typically gives 4 to 6 weeks to accept and pay the tuition deposit before the CAS is issued.
  • Request the CAS 6 to 8 weeks before travel: late CAS requests are the single biggest cause of visa delays for Indian Durham students.
  • Book college accommodation early: Durham’s collegiate housing runs on a first-accept-first-pick basis, so accept promptly if you want a specific college.

Durham University admissions reward Indian applicants who match the programme-specific eligibility floor, submit early in the rolling window, and treat the SOP and references as the deciding levers rather than the raw score.

Durham University Admissions: Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. When does Durham University open PG taught applications for September 2027 entry?

Ans. Durham’s PG taught application portal is already open for September 2027 entry and runs on a rolling basis until 31 July 2027. Popular Business School courses close earlier once programme caps fill, so submit by December 2026 for the strongest shortlist odds.

Ques. What is the minimum IELTS score for Durham University master’s programmes?

Ans. The standard PG taught minimum is IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each band. Programmes like LLM Law, MSc Finance, and MA TESOL raise the floor to IELTS 7.0 with 6.5 in each band. The MBA also requires IELTS 7.0 with 6.5 in each band.

Ques. Does Durham University accept a three-year Indian Bachelor’s for PG entry?

Ans. Yes. Durham accepts a three-year Indian Bachelor’s from a UGC-recognised university for PG taught entry, provided the score maps to a UK 2:1 (around 60 to 65 percent).

Ques. Does Durham University offer an IELTS waiver for Indian students?

Ans. Durham does not grant Medium of Instruction or Class XII English waivers for Indian applicants. The only route without an English test is prior degree-level study of at least one year in a majority-English-speaking country. Most Indian applicants must submit IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or Duolingo.

Ques. What is Durham University’s application fee for Indian applicants?

Ans. PG taught and MBA applicants pay GBP 60 (around INR 7,752) on Durham’s online application portal. UG applicants pay the UCAS fee of GBP 28.95 (around INR 3,740). PhD applications have no separate application fee at institution level.

Ques. What is Durham University’s acceptance rate?

Ans. Durham’s UCAS offer rate is around 72 percent, while the institutional intake rate — offers that convert to enrolments — is closer to 40 percent. Competitive courses like Law, Economics, and MSc Finance sit well below the average.

Ques. Does Durham University require GMAT for the full-time MBA?

Ans. GMAT and GRE are optional for the Durham full-time MBA. A GMAT of 600 plus strengthens the file, particularly if the Bachelor’s percentage is on the lower side. Three years of full-time work experience is a firm requirement.

Ques. How long does Durham University take to send an offer decision?

Ans. Durham typically responds within 4 to 8 weeks for PG taught applications, and within 4 weeks of interview for the MBA. UG decisions flow through UCAS on the standard cycle timeline.

Ques. Which documents does Durham University need from Indian PG applicants?

Ans. Passport bio page, Class X and Class XII mark sheets, Bachelor’s transcripts and degree certificate, SOP, two academic references, CV, and a valid English test score. MBA applicants add work-experience letters, and PhD applicants add a research proposal.

Ques. Can Indian students defer a Durham University offer to the next intake?

Ans. Deferrals are handled at programme level. Most PG taught programmes allow a one-year deferral to the next Michaelmas intake if requested before the term starts; competitive Business School courses grant deferrals sparingly and may require a fresh application.

Ques. Is a UK Student visa hard to secure after a Durham offer?

Ans. The UK Student visa approval rate for Indian students holding a valid Durham CAS is high, provided the maintenance funds, IHS payment, and English score conditions are cleanly evidenced. Standard processing runs 15 working days from a VFS centre in India.

Scholarship

  • I received a £10,000 scholarship in my first year for academic excellence in my 12th boards. I did not apply for this scholarship; the university granted it by themselves.
  • £10,000
  • British Citizens are entitled to student loans, but Indian students can take loans from Indian banks for education abroad.
  • I am unsure how many students receive scholarships per year.

Scholarship

  • Yes. 5000 GBP for international students. So almost all “exemplary” International students received it. It depends on your tuition fee as well so students with more tuition fee got more scholarship, going up to 18000 GBP for MBA
  • And there are other scholarships as well ranging from 2000 GBP to full scholarships. An example is the Hatfield Lioness Scholarship which is a 100 percent scholarship which includes tuition and accommodation and even travel expenses for one female student per year in Hatfield College.

  • I didn’t receive any scholarship.
  • Some of my friends who are studying LLM (Masters in Law) receive £5000 scholarship due to work experience.
  • I’m not sure how many students receive scholarships but on an average students receive £5000-7000 scholarship amount. It all basically depends on your grades, work experience and the course which you are applying to.

  • There’s a scholarship based on merit, which this year for finance was 9.5 CGPA. It had a deduction of 5000 pounds. One of my batchmates received it; he had a CGPA of 9.8 something. I don’t know of any other such financial aid provided; I think there are scholarships for the disabled ones but I don’t know of any such. Scholarship amounts are varied and can be 2000 to 7000 .
