Master of Architecture [MArch] (Architecture and Sustainable Design)
Field of Study:
$37,884 /Yr
University of Nottingham Architecture and Sustainable Design is a Master of Architecture (MArch) taught at University Park Campus in Nottingham. The September 2027 course lasts 12 months full-time, with international tuition of £28,700 (INR 36.31 Lakhs). Entry requires a relevant UK upper second-class degree equivalent: 60%, 65% or 70% from Indian Tier 1, 2 or 3 universities respectively.
The programme combines environmental performance analysis with architectural studio design, followed by a summer dissertation or design thesis. It suits applicants with architecture or building-design training who want to justify design choices through evidence about daylight, ventilation and thermal performance. Its one-year specialist format makes an existing design foundation and readiness for independent project work particularly valuable.
- Core modules use studio reviews, portfolios and research writing rather than examinations.
- The Case Study Project develops environmental evaluation through the study of existing buildings or urban spaces.
- Dissertation supervision includes at least 30 hours of meetings and feedback.
Current Admission Status
The September 2027 intake is officially announced. Application opening and international student deadline: not yet confirmed for 2027/28.
Early August is a tentative planning window, based on the 3 August 2026 international deadline and Nottingham’s published advance-application guidance. Indian applicants should prepare their portfolio while checking the announced 2027 intake’s application opening and final deadline.

Nottingham MArch Sustainable Design Fees and Living Costs 2027
International tuition is £28,700 (INR 36.31 Lakhs) for the complete one-year programme starting in September 2027. Nottingham also publishes course-material allowances, while its deposit policy determines how much money must be available before visa sponsorship.
September 2027 fees: tuition and materials come from the course page; the deposit rule applies to taught master’s starts from August 2026 onwards.
| Item | Amount (£) | INR equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Full-time international tuition | £28,700 | INR 36.31 Lakhs |
| Tuition deposit for visa sponsorship, credited towards fees | £4,500 | INR 5.69 Lakhs |
| Optional book purchases, published annual allowance | Up to £100 | Up to INR 12,650 |
| Printing, published allowance | Up to £50 | Up to INR 6,325 |
| Model making and drawing equipment, published allowance | Up to £50 | Up to INR 6,325 |
All INR conversions in the article use a conversion rate of GBP 1 = INR 126.50 as of 17 October 2026. Rates fluctuate daily, verify before applying.

The deposit is an advance tuition payment, so adding it again to the full course fee would overstate your budget. Before any scholarship, the calculated tuition balance after that payment is £24,200 (INR 30.61 Lakhs). Payment instalments appear in your student account after an offer, which means loan disbursement should follow your individual schedule.
Cost of Living in Nottingham for MArch Students
Nottingham’s published combined estimate is £800 (INR 1.01 Lakhs) to £1,200 (INR 1.52 Lakhs) monthly, covering accommodation, food and transport. The annual row below multiplies that guidance by 12 because this MArch includes summer study.
Living-cost basis: current university guidance reused from the verified college cache; the annual total is calculated rather than separately published.
| Expense | Monthly (£) | Monthly (INR equivalent) |
|---|---|---|
| Combined living costs and monthly total | £800 to £1,200 | INR 1.01 Lakhs to INR 1.52 Lakhs |
| Annual total, calculated for 12 months | £9,600 to £14,400 annually | INR 12.14 Lakhs to INR 18.22 Lakhs annually |
The calculated study-and-visa planning budget is £40,222 (INR 50.88 Lakhs) to £45,022 (INR 56.95 Lakhs), before scholarships. It combines tuition, annual living costs and £200 (INR 25,300) for the listed material allowances. It also includes the current £558 (INR 70,587) visa fee and an illustrative £1,164 (INR 1.47 Lakhs) healthcare charge.
The healthcare allocation assumes 18 months of visa coverage, calculated as 1.5 times the current annual student rate of £776 (INR 98,164). Actual visa duration determines the charge, while flights, a laptop and any application payment remain additional unpriced items. A university living estimate describes spending; the separate visa maintenance requirement concerns financial evidence.

Key insight: The 12-month MArch includes summer research, so arrange housing and funding for the dissertation period rather than budgeting only for taught semesters.
Nottingham MArch Sustainable Design Admission 2027
September 2027 is the only published intake, and the live programme offers full-time study only. Admission requires a relevant degree and a design portfolio, so academic equivalence alone does not complete the application.
Academic threshold: Nottingham’s UK upper second-class honours requirement maps to the following Indian qualifications under its published university-tier system.
| Requirement | Published standard for Indian applicants |
|---|---|
| Relevant bachelor’s degree, Indian Tier 1 institution | 60% or a grade point average of 6.0 on 10, equivalent to a UK upper second-class degree |
| Relevant bachelor’s degree, Indian Tier 2 institution | 65% or a grade point average of 6.5 on 10, equivalent to a UK upper second-class degree |
| Relevant bachelor’s degree, Indian Tier 3 institution | 70% or a grade point average of 7.0 on 10, equivalent to a UK upper second-class degree |
| Subject preparation | Relevant subject with architectural or building-design skills demonstrated through a portfolio |
| Portfolio submission | 10 to 15 pages, PDF format, below 50 MB, submitted with the application |
Check your awarding university against Nottingham’s tier list before interpreting your CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average). The tier determines which published threshold applies, and Nottingham makes the final equivalency decision. The course does not publish a mandatory work-experience duration, admissions-test score or admitted-student academic profile, so none provides a verified competitiveness benchmark.
English Language Requirements for Indian Applicants
The course requires IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Academic 6.5 overall, with no component below 6.0. These component thresholds matter because an adequate overall result cannot offset a lower individual band.
Accepted routes: the following scores use the university’s current equivalencies linked from its 2027 course requirements.
| English route | Published requirement |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 overall, no less than 6.0 in each element |
| PTE Academic, Pearson Test of English | 71 overall, minimum 65 |
| TOEFL iBT, Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test, university wording for tests after January 2026 | “4.5 with no less than 4.5 in each element” |
| TOEFL iBT, university wording for tests up until January 2026 | 90 overall, minimum 19 in Writing and Listening, 20 in Reading and 22 in Speaking |
| Class XII English from the two accepted Indian central boards | 75% |
The newer TOEFL requirement uses the university’s published 1 to 6 scale, while the older result uses its 0 to 120 scale. No score conversion is needed between these routes. Nottingham lists Pearson’s test as another accepted route, which also requires meeting its component minimum.
- IELTS, Pearson and TOEFL results must meet the university’s two-year validity rule, so check the test date against September 2027 entry.
- Nottingham rejects assembled best component scores across separate Pearson or TOEFL sittings, making a complete qualifying result necessary.
- State-board Class XII English is not accepted through the central-board waiver, so those applicants need another recognised English route.
The accepted school boards are the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE). Their Class XII English qualification can meet the published 75% threshold, while degrees from selected institutions, including Delhi and Mumbai universities, provide another waiver route.
Portfolio Fit and Course Workload
The 10 to 15-page portfolio should show design projects through drawings, sections, perspectives and models rather than relying only on finished images. International applicants also need a tutor’s or employer’s letter confirming authorship, with academic confirmation on institutional headed paper. Optional sketches, paintings or photographs may occupy no more than two pages.
Nottingham allocates 120 taught credits and a 60-credit summer project, with approximately 10 working hours represented by each credit. The calculated 1,800-hour workload includes independent study, so the listed contact hours represent only part of the commitment. Nottingham separately lists a two-year professional Architecture MArch; applicants seeking professional recognition should establish which qualification their registration route requires.
Student perspective
One reviewer enrolled on this MArch in 2023 described its pace as demanding and valued access to relevant software in a January 2025 account. Use these student reviews to frame questions about software access and studio preparation before accepting an offer.
These comments are anecdotal and do not replace official University of Nottingham data.
Tip for Indian students: A qualifying Indian degree meets only one selection requirement; use the portfolio’s limited pages to demonstrate spatial judgement and environmental design reasoning.
Nottingham MArch Sustainable Design Application 2027
September 2027 entry is announced, but the international application deadline and portal opening date remain unconfirmed on the published schedule. Nottingham’s linked application page explicitly marks 2027/28 information as awaiting confirmation, so a precise final submission day cannot be presented as settled.
Expected planning window: early August 2027 is tentative, based on the prior-cycle international deadline of 3 August 2026. Nottingham also advises applying six to seven weeks before a standard late-September start. Check the official 2027 postgraduate application schedule before treating that window as a deadline.
The public course page lists no January or summer intake, and its application process does not publish numbered selection rounds. Nottingham aims to decide complete applications within six weeks, rather than promising a fixed decision date. No programme-specific interview timetable is published on the checked application surfaces.
Build a Complete Design Application
Apply through Nottingham’s direct postgraduate system and submit the portfolio alongside the academic documents. The general application guide contains separate instructions for the professional Architecture MArch, making accurate course selection essential for this sustainability specialism.
- Upload clear degree certificates and complete or current transcripts, because Nottingham cannot assess an application without the academic evidence.
- Prepare the portfolio authorship letter with your tutor or practice supervisor before submitting, especially when professional projects form part of your evidence.
- Prepare two recent references if requested, including an academic referee, and follow the university’s two-year dating and headed-paper requirements.
- Use any requested personal statement to connect an existing design project with the programme’s environmental analysis and summer research options.
After an offer, meeting its conditions matters because visa sponsorship requires an accepted unconditional offer and the applicable deposit or recognised sponsorship evidence. The deposit policy says payment should follow unconditional acceptance, so a conditional offer alone does not establish readiness for the visa stage. Confirm English evidence and funding documents before arranging that payment.
Applicants seeking the 2027/28 Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship face a separate funding deadline of 20 October 2026. That funding timetable precedes the unpublished academic deadline, so scholarship eligibility and nomination requirements need attention independently of the course application’s eventual closing date.
Application tip: Use the pending 2027 schedule to finish the portfolio and authorship confirmation; do not delay a complete file until a tentative August window.
Nottingham MArch Sustainable Design Scholarships 2027
The automatic International Postgraduate Scholarship explicitly includes 2027 MArch entrants, while Commonwealth funding requires a separate competitive application. Sports support is another route for qualified athletes, but its current published packages do not establish a 2027-specific award deadline.
Funding scope: the first two awards below name 2027 entry; the bronze sports package is current published support with separate sporting conditions.
| Award | Published value | INR equivalent | Eligibility and route |
|---|---|---|---|
| International Postgraduate Scholarship, 2027 | £3,000 tuition reduction | INR 3.80 Lakhs | Self-funded international entrants to eligible full-time UK-campus master’s degrees, including MArch; automatic after enrolment without a separate scholarship application |
| Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship, 2027/28 | Full approved tuition and airfare; current living stipend £1,712 monthly outside London | Full approved tuition and airfare; current stipend INR 2.17 Lakhs monthly | Eligible Indian citizens permanently resident in India who cannot afford UK study; apply through the Commission’s system and an eligible nominator |
| Bronze Sport Scholarship, current published package | Up to £1,000 towards training and competition expenses, alongside support services | Up to INR 1.27 Lakhs towards specified sporting expenses | Academy, national or international sporting standard or evidenced future potential; submit an expression of interest and complete the sports assessment process |
The automatic tuition award reduces the calculated course tuition to £25,700 (INR 32.51 Lakhs) for an eligible recipient. Its conditions exclude external sponsorship, another university award and students progressing through the specified Kaplan pathways. Because the scholarship is applied after enrolment, arrange the deposit and initial cash flow around your actual offer and payment schedule.
Commonwealth Funding and the India-Return Tradeoff
The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) closes 2027/28 applications on 20 October 2026 at 16:00 British Summer Time, equivalent to 20:30 Indian Standard Time (IST). The Commission administers this funded route, and its UK timezone controls the portal cutoff. Nominators can set their own deadlines, so the Commission’s date does not replace the Indian nomination process.
Submit through the Commission’s system and an eligible nominator, using the official Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship requirements. The scheme requires financial need and a development rationale, making a specific sustainable-building challenge in India more relevant than a general wish to study overseas. Scholars must return home after the award and cannot switch to a Graduate visa to remain in the UK.
- For the automatic award, confirm self-funded status and exclusions before subtracting the tuition reduction from a loan request.
- For Commonwealth funding, prepare the required transcripts and references for submission by the applicable Commission and nominator deadlines.
- For bronze sports support, distinguish restricted training expenses from tuition funding and obtain an award decision before including support in your budget.
Nottingham’s sports pages permit some combinations of sporting and academic support, but the automatic master’s award excludes another university award. Obtain a written eligibility decision before adding these benefits together. The bronze route also requires sustained sporting performance alongside this MArch’s studio and summer research workload.

Scholarship reality: Commonwealth funding can change this MArch’s affordability substantially, but its required return home makes it unsuitable for financing a plan centred on post-study UK employment.
Nottingham MArch Sustainable Design Salary 2027
No course-specific salary, job-offer rate or sector breakdown is published on the checked 2027 MArch page. The available quantitative university evidence concerns architecture and built environment undergraduates, so it cannot establish earnings for this specialist master’s cohort.
Evidence scope: the university figure below covers the 2022/23 undergraduate cohort; the government figures are current occupational benchmarks across different experience levels.
| Evidence category | Measure and scope | Annual gross salary (£) | INR equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| School-level undergraduate outcome | Average starting salary within 15 months, architecture and built environment, Graduate Outcomes 2022/23 | £27,818 | INR 35.19 Lakhs |
| External job-market benchmark | National Careers Service architect profile, starter | £31,000 | INR 39.22 Lakhs |
| External job-market benchmark | National Careers Service architect profile, experienced | £58,000 | INR 73.37 Lakhs |
Source: University of Nottingham architecture and built environment undergraduate careers information and the UK National Careers Service architect profile.
The school-level average describes graduates of different qualifications, while the architect benchmarks concern a regulated occupation with its own registration requirements. Neither dataset establishes the salary available after this MArch alone. Before using an architect salary in a borrowing decision, establish whether your previous training and intended role satisfy the relevant professional route.
Nottingham provides individual postgraduate career support for exploring roles, preparing applications and interviews and meeting employers. For this course, a useful employment portfolio would connect studio proposals with the environmental analysis behind them, reflecting the published curriculum. Ask prospective employers which building-performance and design tasks their advertised role actually involves.
Gross salary is not take-home income, because tax, National Insurance and personal circumstances alter the amount available for repayments. Use the government’s take-home pay estimator with an actual offer before setting a monthly education-loan repayment amount.
Return on Investment (ROI) for This Specialist MArch
The calculated planning cost of £40,222 (INR 50.88 Lakhs) to £45,022 (INR 56.95 Lakhs) makes this a substantial investment in specialist design capability. Its financial case depends on scholarship eligibility, your existing professional qualification and the country where you intend to earn after graduation.
- The 2027 automatic award reduces tuition for eligible self-funded entrants, so include that saving in borrowing calculations only after checking every published exclusion.
- The 60-credit summer project occupies the final study period, so fund living costs through completion rather than relying on earnings during that research period.
- The 18-month Graduate visa provides a limited UK job-search window, so investigate sponsorship-capable employers while developing the course’s environmental design portfolio.
- The published salary evidence covers undergraduates and external occupations, so request course-specific destination information before using those figures to justify debt.
- Commonwealth scholars must return home, so assess the MArch’s sustainable-design skills against Indian roles and an India-based repayment plan before choosing that funding route.
Student perspective
The same January 2025 course reviewer wanted more industrial exposure, an individual anecdotal observation about career preparation. Ask the department what practice-facing opportunities are available for your intake and whether they require separate selection.
ROI reality: The verified proposition is environmental design training and a research-backed portfolio; course-specific employment evidence is insufficient for a credible numerical loan-payback forecast.
UK Visa for Nottingham MArch Sustainable Design Students 2027
Nottingham’s Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies supports your Student visa application after offer and deposit requirements are met. Current charges are £558 (INR 70,587) for the application and £776 (INR 98,164) per year for student healthcare coverage. Outside-London maintenance evidence is £1,171 (INR 1.48 Lakhs) monthly for nine months, totalling £10,539 (INR 13.33 Lakhs). These maintenance funds must satisfy the 28-day holding rule; they are financial evidence rather than an additional university charge.
- Under current Graduate visa rules, eligible graduates applying from 1 January 2027 receive 18 months, which limits the post-MArch UK job-search window.
- Skilled Worker sponsorship normally requires £41,700 (INR 52.75 Lakhs) or the occupation’s going rate, whichever is higher; ask employers whether an eligible salary concession applies.
- The Skilled Worker route can lead to settlement after five qualifying years, making sponsored employment a separate decision from obtaining temporary post-study permission.
- This taught MArch normally does not permit Student dependant sponsorship, although eligible government-sponsored students on courses longer than six months can qualify.

Visa reality: Model the MArch’s UK employment window using the government’s 18-month Graduate visa rule; the course page’s older two-year wording does not reflect that rule.
Nottingham MArch Sustainable Design Ranking 2027
Nottingham’s Architecture and Built Environment subject appears within the world top 100 in the 2026 QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) subject ranking. The university also reports seventh place in the UK for that subject, which provides discipline-level context for applicants considering September 2027 entry.
Ranking edition: 2026. These positions concern Architecture and Built Environment across the university, rather than a separate ranking of this one-year MArch.
| Subject ranking | Scope | Published position |
|---|---|---|
| QS World University Rankings by Subject | Architecture and Built Environment, global | Top 100 |
| QS UK University Rankings by Subject | Architecture and Built Environment, UK | 7th |
The discipline ranking does not show this course’s admission probability, salary or professional-registration status. For this MArch, the more immediate fit decision concerns your readiness for environmental analysis within studio projects and the independent summer research component.
Check Out: University of Nottingham Subject Rankings
Honest take: The subject ranking supports Nottingham’s disciplinary standing, but choose this specific MArch for its environmental design curriculum and project structure.
The Nottingham MArch suits applicants with existing design training who want to make environmental performance part of architectural decision-making. Its studio projects and summer research offer a focused way to develop that specialism, while the compressed workload requires preparation before arrival. The material tradeoff is a substantial overseas budget without published course-specific salary evidence or an assured professional-registration outcome. Confirm your qualification route, finish the portfolio and check the 2027 application schedule before committing funds.
Nottingham Architecture and Sustainable Design MArch FAQs
Ques. Is Nottingham’s Architecture and Sustainable Design MArch the right route to become a UK architect?
Ans. Select this course for its environmental design specialism, after checking how your existing qualifications fit the professional route you need. Nottingham separately offers a two-year professional Architecture MArch, so the shared MArch award name does not establish equivalent registration outcomes. Ask the department to confirm the appropriate route using your Indian degree and professional background.
Ques. Can an Indian applicant meet this Nottingham MArch’s English requirement without IELTS?
Ans. A recognised waiver can remove the test requirement, but it does not replace the academic threshold or portfolio assessment. Nottingham lists 75% in Class XII English from CBSE or CISCE as matching this course’s English level, alongside selected Indian degree routes. Submit your specific qualification evidence for acceptance before treating a general English-medium education claim as sufficient.
Ques. How should Indian applicants calculate the total cost of Nottingham’s sustainable design MArch?
Ans. Begin with the INR 50.88 Lakhs to INR 56.95 Lakhs planning illustration, which includes a full year of living costs and the stated visa assumptions. Add your actual travel, equipment and any application charge, then subtract scholarship support only under its published eligibility conditions. Count the tuition deposit within tuition, since adding it separately would inflate the funding requirement.
Ques. Which Nottingham MArch funding route fits an applicant hoping to work in the UK afterwards?
Ans. The Commonwealth scholarship’s return-home condition conflicts with a plan to remain through the Graduate visa immediately after the funded degree. The automatic tuition award instead requires eligible self-funded status, leaving a substantial balance for the applicant to finance. Establish the funding route before borrowing against an assumed UK salary, because this MArch has no published course-specific earnings figure.
Ques. Should I wait for the final 2027 Nottingham MArch application deadline before preparing my file?
Ans. Prepare the portfolio and authorship confirmation before the final deadline appears, because these documents require input from tutors or employers. The early-August window is tentative, while Nottingham’s six-week decision aim means late submission can compress time for offer conditions and visa preparation. Scholarship applicants must also follow their separate funding timetable rather than waiting for the academic closing date.

Dislikes
- How expensive the course is taking into account how much a pound is worth with respect to rupees
- Duration of the course(could be longer) as it felt fast phased
- No placement/ industrial opportunities especially critical in the field of architecture.
- Off campus accommodation is what I opted for, but it’s still a University accommodation. I looked into the University website which gave me various options including the price range to pick from, facilities, type of rooms available etc.
- My accommodation was 131 pounds per week with all bills included. It was around a 20 minute walk from my department, it’s closer to other departments like psychology, medicine etc.
- One thing that I was most thankful for in my accommodation is the fact that it had a good mix of students from various ethnic backgrounds. So this ensured that I got to mingle with people from various cultures and that I did not just stick to the Indian student population.
