Likes
- My overall experience was excellent in terms of how the course was structured and the size of the class as well. I was also a teaching assistant for the first year law students which was quite invigorating as it gave me a view of how their classes are structured as well.
- The school also provides a ton of resources for international students, especially when it comes to training on academic writing, academic reading and trainers who work with students on each of their papers to help them improve their scores.
- In terms of the college life, the campus has a host of societies one can join. For me though, my flat became my primary circle of support and company. We had a diverse flat with people from 6 countries which was awesome because it gave us an opportunity to experience our different cultures and the food too. Some of my best memories from York are around our kitchen table where we shared at least one meal everyday and a host of coffee breaks in between studying.
Dislikes
- The only downside I saw was that the local people were a bit ignorant about India and generally the world outside UK which was a bit odd at times, though they were overall good sports about learning.
Course Curriculum
- Because mine was a master's course, it did not have a typical exam structure. Our course only required academic papers to be submitted for the 4-5 different subjects we covered during a term. And of course the last term was entirely about the dissertation
- The curriculum was a good balance of the current state of affairs as well as long-term strategy and ways of thinking.
- We typically had 3 days of classes lasting up to 2-4 hours depending on what we were doing that day. Since the class size was small, it was more like a conference setting instead of a classroom, which was helpful for my overall learning experience because I came in after working professionally for 3 years.
Fees
- I believe the tuition fee (which was cheaper than any schools in London and Edinburgh) was about GBP 7500 with GBP 7000-8000 for the accommodation
- The accommodation was newly built, as our college was a newly formed college and was comfortable. I went for the en-suite option, which was slightly expensive but the plus side was that you get your own bathroom.
- From a safety POV, I chose to stay on-campus and the cost of that was pretty much the same as staying off campus. Besides, there’s no real benefit of staying off-campus in terms of restrictions or anything.
Likes
- Campus Great, airy, huge campus with convenient travel across York city
- Faculty Amazing faculty with varied experience with amazing placement call to discuss CVs and other job opportunities
- Diversity in terms of culture and students
Dislikes
- 1-2 classes per day (had to travel 45 minutes for just 2 classes, so maybe poor schedule)
- Should have better canteen experience (very expensive food)
- Should have better practical implications of theoretical knowledge
Course Curriculum
- I think it was medium. The course in general was very well structured, and the UoY online platform had each and every course detail that one could go through. There was a Blackboard app that we used that had this online VLE system.
- It was a mix of both practical and theoretical. Since we had optional courses that we had to choose along with our main foundational courses. The curriculum was designed to suit your future plans, and we could choose the optional courses to our liking, which was a positive aspect.
- The negative aspect was that selected faculty members of a few courses were renowned to be strict with marking, which I think influences our decision to choose the course.
Fees
- The course fee was 20,000 GBP
- I lived in private accommodation whose rent was close to 650 GBP each month
- I had to pay 2000 GBP at the start of my course and then there was an option to either pay monthly, semesterly or annually.
- The estimated monthly expense, including rent groceries or any other expenses, was close to 900 GBP or 1000 GBP.
- I had to opt for a yearly loan of INR 30 Lac to suffice for my college expenses and fees and had to work part-time at York to manage my finances.
Likes
- The campus was really good - Huge in terms of size, well maintained, beautiful buildings and surroundings
- Mental health was one of the top priorities at all times
- Staff (Including housekeeping, faculty, cafes) was extremely friendly and helpful
Dislikes
- Careers Team wasn't as great as I had imagined
- A bit secluded as campus is huge
- Needed to have more small supermarkets around the campus
Course Curriculum
- My course was difficult on a scale of 1-10 I would give it a 7. It wasn't really difficult but if you chose a few modules that require lots of research etc it would get overwhelming
- Positive: Amazing practicality, apply to real life teaching
- Negative: None
Fees
- Fees was £18350 for tuition Accomodation was £4000 (Accommodation depends on what college/living style you choose)
- Fees is charged either yearly or term-wise (There are 3 terms) Monthly expense again depends on your lifestyle - mine ranged from £100-£200 which included going out, groceries, transportation, takeaways etc. This does not include rent. Rent is in accomodation
Likes
- The environment and ambience, the campus had a great forest cover and a lake flowing through it.
- The resources (the library, the subscriptions, etc) The culture and inclusivity, people were very welcoming.
- The events and student clubs.
Dislikes
- The teaching was good at times (a few lecturers were great, but then there were some who were just reading out from the lecture slides).
- Not much placement support.
- The curriculum felt a bit outdated, there were interesting things but didn’t many include skills that would help you land a job.
Fees
- The total university course fees was £29,990 (tuition fee), paid twice October 31st and January 31st (Even if delayed for genuine reasons the Uni would understand, just have a word with the fees team)
- I stayed in a private hostel near my university - £9,000, Paid quarterly (they had monthly and annual options too)
- Travel was £2 pounds per trip but York is a small city so walking around it would be just as fine
- As for food average meal cost in Uni was around £6, outside would be £10-20
- Cooking is cheaper and better but it's super time consuming
- Off campus accommodation, but it was a student hostel.
- I searched on the web there are many websites as well for this, if you are searching for a house/housemates I would suggest Facebook groups that are already present.
- The rent was around £900 per month (all inclusive), A ensuite room and a shared kitchen.
- Accommodations in York are a scarce resource, be early!!
- People start applying for them as soon as the 1st semester of the previous year. (like for 2025 they start applying in 2024 itself)
- My accommodation was only a 10 min walk away. (The Boulevard, great place if you have good flatmates)
- Most of the Indian students stayed on campus where rent is cheaper a bit (£715 per month) but the rooms are 1/3rd the size of what I had but the security is great!
Likes
- Flexibility in meeting with faculty in addition to regular classes. All professors on my program were happy to schedule time and meet you if you were struggling and were very responsive to emails as well.
- York in itself is a perfect student city with a good blend of social activities as well as a calmer environment you need to focus when compared to cities like London/Manchester. On campus accomodations are great but I lived off campus and it's a perfectly safe city to live off campus if you require something cheaper.
- Student portal that is the university account has all lectures, notes, videos of classes uploaded for all the modules which is extremely preferable if you are one for blended learning.
Dislikes
- Lack of career services or assistance for job search or guidance as an international student requiring sponsorship.
- Thesis at the end of the program is decided from pre-determined list of projects. While professors allow you to proceed with your own ideas if you have something, it's more of an exception than the rule.
- Lesser proximity to bigger cities also means job fairs and conferences are harder to get to and from but it can be managed if planned well.
Course Curriculum
- The difficulty level was quite high for my programme, especially if you're from a non-mathematics field. There is a significant jump in mathematical rigour but professors are extremely good and helpful. It was a more theoretical program than practical.
- The most positive aspect of my program was how proactive the professors were and the most negative was the lack of practical projects.
- I had 4 modules each semester except the third, which was a thesis.
Fees
- My course was 25000 GBP/year for 1 year, including three semesters. The fees could be paid upfront at the start of the programme or equally semester-wise. There is a deposit of around 2000 GBP when you apply for a student visa so the university can process your CAS; this amount is deducted from your overall fees.
- I lived off campus, 15 minutes walk from campus, where I paid 425 GBP per person per month in a two-bedroom place. Monthly expenses depend but you will need approximately 150-200 to cover essentials. I walked everywhere; I didn't eat out too much.
Likes
- My course had some well known professors in the industry.
- There are multiple places in buildings here you can study apart from library, you can book a group study rooms as well.
- Really nice rooms in college accommodation.
Dislikes
- Course was highly research based, over practical based.
- Sports/Gym membership wasn't free and had really expensive fee.
- some if the rooms had electrical heaters and hardly maintained the temperature.
Course Curriculum
- It was not very tough, based on assessments but usually Indians have a hard time understanding the teaching method, especially referencing and plagiarism, which sometimes cause them to fail.
- Positive aspect: The course was gaming-centric and a very popular course of the university, with well-known professors and facilities available.
- Negative aspect: very research-based because of it being a Russell Group.
- In a day there are maximum 3 classes, earliest being around 9, but as late as 4:30, 60% were Indians.
Fees
- The fee was 25 lakhs for the course and around 8.5 lakhs for accommodation and fees are charged semester-wise.
- Buses within the university are mostly free but monthly expenses cost around (apart from rent) 200-250 GBP for your food/groceries and little expenses like notebooks and pens or basics. I think 8 hours of part-time can cover your basics except rent.
Likes
- University of York has a very unique campus. It’s spread over 550 acres and is a beautiful mix of modern and historic architecture.
- It has a diverse range of students from various countries. So it’s very easy to find your kind of people.
- It is very accessible despite being huge. There is a free campus bus service that makes all areas easy to reach.
Dislikes
- If you live off campus, it becomes difficult to interact with students who live on campus. You are still able to interact with a lot of other people but it becomes a bit divided.
- While there are a lot of grocery stores on campus, a few of the big and cheap ones are quite far.
- There are two campuses - while both of them have their own charm. The west campus has residential colleges which are not as well built as the ones on east campus as these are newly built. There is always new construction underway though and work is being done to make them as accommodative as possible.
Course Curriculum
- The course curriculum is quite different from India and can be difficult as well. It is as challenging as you would expect academics to be. The good thing is that most courses are a good blend of theory and practical.
- I love that my course is largely practical based but it can mean a lot of self-study in terms of theory.
- The law course has around 250 students from around the world but we are divided into groups of 10–12 for most seminars and workshops.
- My course has around 20 Indian students but other management and finance courses have a larger number.
Fees
- I am enrolled in a 3-year course, the tuition for which is around £20,000 per annum. It is broken down into 3 installments. The first is paid in October, which is 50% and then 25% each in January and April. The tuition might increase a bit each year depending on your course.
- The accommodation charges are between £6,000 and £9000 per year. It is paid in similar instalments as the tuition.
Monthly costs might vary from £400-£1000 depending on your lifestyle and your choices.

- Library. Best place to work on assignments. I had most of my productive time in the library, where I could be in my zone.
Dislikes
- Too much travel from the west campus to the east campus to attend lectures.
- Extracurricular groups or clubs felt expensive to join.
- Wentworth College used to close up early on weekends.
Course Curriculum
- It was a bit difficult for me to understand the academics at the beginning because the learning process and approach were different.
- The teaching process was a mix of both theoretical and practical, whereas my undergraduate degree was only theoretical teaching. Anyway, it was a good learning experience for me.
- The mixed approach was a positive aspect of my learning and course.
Fees
- My fee structure was:
- Tuition fees: 26700 GBP (equal to approximately 26.6 lakh INR. Firstly, I had to pay a deposit of 2000 GBP. Then, I had to pay the fees in 3 installments. The first was 50% of the total fee amount minus the deposit in October 2023. Then, I had to pay 25% of the remaining fees by January 2024 and the remaining 25% by February 2024.
- My Total Accommodation fee was 8619 GBP for 51 weeks. I had to pay monthly installments. The per week rent was 169 GBP.
- My other monthly expenses included groceries, travel, and miscellaneous. On average, my monthly expenses were 80-100 GBP.

Likes
- I liked the fact that the library was always accessible and had common rooms wherein you can go in anytime and study.
- The university's common room had access to various games and a television set which made it more enjoyable to hang out with friends.
- The classrooms were big enough to accommodate huge crowds and the hang out areas throughout the university were aplenty.
Dislikes
- The university could have given a 6 month or a 1 year internship to students looking for a job but wasn't the case at the time.
- When I had enrolled for the university (2018), UK hadn't introduced a work visa without sponsorship for foreign students which made it more difficult to look for a job, clear the interview rounds and the most importantly fetch a Tier - 2 Work Visa.
- I wished the students were divided into 2 classrooms as there were a lot of students in the classroom at a time.
Full-time opportunities were aplenty in the UK. The jobs during my stint there in 2018 - 19 were a lot. I had cleared a few rounds of many companies when I applied for jobs. It used to get stuck for Tier-2 visa sponsorship from the company. The average salary for a fresher was GBP 23,000 onwards. The typical way to find jobs was online through company websites job applications etc.
Likes
- UK because of UK culture, British Government and regulations generally similar to India. Ease of getting the Visa and future job Opportunities scope, Business management has better recognition in UK and is famous for Management courses.
- University of York for the location of York (One of the oldest Medieval city and recognized as the most friendly people of UK are the York residents).
- The QS ranking and global ranking of the University that falls under 150 ranks in the world, and stands top 16 in the UK, The campus location and many other factors.
Course Curriculum
Management course curriculum is very good and is very well updated and they keep adding and removing few topics every year, so they have good hands on updated curriculum for every year.
Fees
23,900 pounds for 2022-2023 batch, now the fee structure is increased by 2500 pounds
