University of York Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Indian applicants to the University of York face two core requirements: an accepted bachelor’s score and a valid English language test.

University of York PG Requirements for Indian Students

  • Academic: Bachelor’s degree with 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 (UK 2:1 equivalent); 55% accepted from University of Delhi and similarly rigorous institutions.
  • English test: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component for most departments; TOEFL iBT 87 with 21 in each component and 23 in Writing; PTE Academic and Duolingo also accepted.
  • Credential verification: WES ICAP report or attested transcripts from the awarding institution.
  • Other: Two-page statement of purpose and two academic references for most masters; MBA and select MSc programmes may add an interview.

University of York UG Requirements for Indian Students

  • Academic: Class 12 with 75% to 85% overall from CBSE or ICSE best four subjects; 75% to 85% from state boards best five subjects.
  • English: 75% or above in Class 12 English from CBSE, ICSE, or approved state boards may waive IELTS.

Key insight: The English test result must have been taken within the two years before the course start date, and scores cannot be combined across sittings or test types.

University of York Acceptance Rate 2027

The University of York does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Based on Russell Group intake patterns and undergraduate cycle admissions data, the acceptance rate is estimated at 78% (estimated) across programmes. This is a directional figure rather than an official rate, and selectivity varies sharply by department.

Competitive masters in Computer Science, Data Science, and Finance close earliest each cycle and effectively become more selective as the rolling deadline approaches. Arts, humanities, and education programmes typically stay open longer with wider offer bands.

Reality check: An institution-wide acceptance rate hides department-level competition; Indian applicants to STEM and business routes should treat submission timing as a decisive factor, not just eligibility on paper.

University of York Campus, Facilities and Student Life

The University of York operates a collegiate campus set around a lake in Heslington, two miles from York city centre and connected by frequent bus routes.

  • Location and transport: Heslington West and Heslington East campuses; frequent buses run to York rail station, with London reachable in about two hours.
  • Accommodation: Nine colleges house first-year students; university-managed housing guaranteed for eligible international freshers who apply by the housing deadline.
  • Research and facilities: York holds a Teaching Excellence Framework Gold rating (2023) and hosts research centres including the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination and the York Plasma Institute.
  • Indian community: The York India Society organises Diwali, Holi, and career events; over 250 Indian students are enrolled across departments.

What Indian students say: The compact walkable campus, guaranteed first-year housing, and lower rent than London are cited as the practical draws; the trade-off is a smaller city with fewer weekend options than Manchester or Birmingham.

University of York Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

The University of York operates a central Careers and Placements team that runs employer fairs, industry mentoring, and one-to-one appointments across every faculty.

  • Employment support: Careers appointments continue for three years after graduation, with dedicated resources for international students on the UK job market.
  • Recruiting sectors: Finance, consulting, technology, life sciences, government, and higher education are the strongest recruiter clusters for York masters graduates.
  • Representative employers: Recruitment activity spans NHS, Deloitte, PwC, KPMG, IBM, and BAE Systems as regularly cited campus recruiters (verify current list at York Careers).
  • Post-study work: The UK Graduate Route visa allows Indian graduates to work in any role for two years after a masters or three years after a PhD.
  • Median salary: Specific programme-level starting salaries are not disclosed by the university; UK-wide masters graduate medians are a reasonable planning proxy.

Insider note: The two-year Graduate Route is what makes a York masters practical for Indian students; use the first six months to convert into a skilled worker visa role rather than as a job-search buffer.

University of York vs Peer Universities

The peer set below covers three UK Russell Group universities of similar rank and one non-Russell UK comparator, weighted on QS 2027 position and PG fee overlap for Indian applicants.

UniversityQS Rank 2027Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026Avg Annual PG Fee (GBP / INR lakh)Differentiator
University of York#158#130GBP 26,900 to 34,500 / 35.2 to 45.1 lakhRussell Group, TEF Gold, campus city under 200k
University of Sheffield#92NAGBP 27,000 to 34,000 / 35.3 to 44.4 lakhHigher QS rank, larger engineering cohort
University of Leeds#77NAGBP 28,000 to 36,000 / 36.6 to 47.0 lakhLarger city, wider industry access
Newcastle University#146NAGBP 26,400 to 33,500 / 34.5 to 43.8 lakhRussell Group, similar fee band, stronger medical
University of Lancaster#178NAGBP 25,000 to 33,000 / 32.7 to 43.1 lakhHigher-ranked management school

York stands apart from the peer group on two data-backed points: it holds a TEF Gold rating that most peer Russell Group universities do not, and it sits in a smaller, lower-rent city that reduces total study cost by roughly INR 3 to 5 lakh a year against Leeds or Sheffield.

Key insight: Choose York over Leeds or Sheffield when total cost and quality-of-teaching signals matter more than raw QS rank; choose Leeds or Sheffield when a larger city recruiter base is decisive.

The University of York fits Indian students who want a Russell Group masters at a total two-year investment of INR 50 to 62 lakh, backed by a TEF Gold teaching signal and the two-year UK Graduate Route visa. Its strongest single Indian-relevant advantage is the guaranteed first-year housing paired with rents 30% lower than London.

It is not the right pick for applicants who need a top-100 QS brand for employer filters back home or who want a large-city job market during studies; Leeds, Sheffield, or Manchester serve those cases better.

  • The university has a tonne of resources and clubs and societies one can join. There’s also a gym on campus that gives you student prices, complete with a pool.
  • There are also intercollegiate events that are organised every now and then, which were super fun. Like, I attended a lovely Diwali party hosted for foreign students and I also went for a great Turkish coffee tasting event. I was also part of the Southeast Asian society and we celebrated Diwali together.
  • Since the city center is so close to the university and a part of the campus is at the city center too, students have a ton of things they can participate there too like city walks, pub crawls, ghost walks, theatre, etc.

Fees

  • I believe the tuition fee (which was cheaper than any schools in London and Edinburgh) was about GBP 7500 with GBP 7000-8000 for the accommodation
  • The accommodation was newly built, as our college was a newly formed college and was comfortable. I went for the en-suite option, which was slightly expensive but the plus side was that you get your own bathroom.
  • From a safety POV, I chose to stay on-campus and the cost of that was pretty much the same as staying off campus. Besides, there’s no real benefit of staying off-campus in terms of restrictions or anything.

  • There were always some sort of ongoing events on campus organised by either the University of different courses or different student union parties.
  • They were always either free of cost or would only include a nominal fee if some sort of activity was involved.
  • Library was the best part of collegewith so many zones made to suit your needs. Quiet zone, computer zone, group study zone, etc. All included in your ID card.
  • I preferred to do my assignments in the library often.
  • There were many sports facilities with a gym, swimming pool and other courts, but since they were all in different parts of the university, which usually would need a campus bus to get around, I didn't go there often.
  • The following is the debrief of the campuses and facilities:
    • Campus West—This is the OG campus, home to most colleges, lecture halls, and the iconic Central Hall.
    • Campus East—the newer side, with modern buildings, Langwith and Constantine Colleges, and the York Law School.
    • York Sport Village—Includes a gym, swimming pool, athletics track, velodrome, and loads of courts and pitches .
    • NCUK
    • Medical Centre—On Campus West, offering GP services and mental health support.
    • Wikipedia
    • Bars & Cafe– The Courtyard, D-Bar, Glasshouse, and more – perfect for chilling or grabbing food between lectures
    • Norman Rea Gallery—a student-run art gallery right on campus .
    • Event festivals: Roses Tournament, Freshers’ Week and Viking Festival don't remember more.
    • College Sports – More casual, great for making mates and staying active .
    • York Student Cinema – Cheap movie nights on campus .
    • Student Media – Get involved with YSTV, URY (radio), or Nouse (newspaper).

Fees

  • The course fee was 20,000 GBP
  • I lived in private accommodation whose rent was close to 650 GBP each month
  • I had to pay 2000 GBP at the start of my course and then there was an option to either pay monthly, semesterly or annually.
  • The estimated monthly expense, including rent groceries or any other expenses, was close to 900 GBP or 1000 GBP.
  • I had to opt for a yearly loan of INR 30 Lac to suffice for my college expenses and fees and had to work part-time at York to manage my finances.

  • College has 2 campus: East and West

  • 2 Campuses, East and West both in York, free and paid buses run every 15 mins.
  • We had a huge library, super huge and also they were subscribed to almost all the journals.
  • Sports was great we had manyyyyyyyyyyy. Sports clubs, weekly competitions, Super huge Gyms.
  • No major fests as such but the societies would conduct parties every month. For Indians there is a Diwali Event, super great.
  • Cultural and sports once again many societies and many games.

Fees

  • The total university course fees was £29,990 (tuition fee), paid twice October 31st and January 31st (Even if delayed for genuine reasons the Uni would understand, just have a word with the fees team)
  • I stayed in a private hostel near my university - £9,000, Paid quarterly (they had monthly and annual options too)
  • Travel was £2 pounds per trip but York is a small city so walking around it would be just as fine
  • As for food average meal cost in Uni was around £6, outside would be £10-20
  • Cooking is cheaper and better but it's super time consuming

  • The university has two campuses, East and West Heslington. Both aren't too far from each other and have a well-connected bus route. There are a total of nine residential colleges. I was in Wentworth.
  • The campus has a big library, which is quite accessible and the cafe in the library was one of my favourite spots. There are exceptional mental health support services on campus.
  • In my programme, there was a tea every Wednesday for students to meet up each Wednesday for tea and cakes. It was, in my opinion, the best way to meet people in my position.

Fees

  • My course was 25000 GBP/year for 1 year, including three semesters. The fees could be paid upfront at the start of the programme or equally semester-wise. There is a deposit of around 2000 GBP when you apply for a student visa so the university can process your CAS; this amount is deducted from your overall fees.
  • I lived off campus, 15 minutes walk from campus, where I paid 425 GBP per person per month in a two-bedroom place. Monthly expenses depend but you will need approximately 150-200 to cover essentials. I walked everywhere; I didn't eat out too much.

  • There are a lot of events and festivals through the months and engaging activities every week, at least 2-3 times in your accommodation.
  • There are three libraries; you can book rooms through the app.
  • Sports facilities are there, but gyms and swimming need hefty fees. its not free, but you can play pool, table tennis, and basketball. There are a lot of clubs that you can be part of. I was a department rep and Scrutiny officer.

Fees

  • The fee was 25 lakhs for the course and around 8.5 lakhs for accommodation and fees are charged semester-wise.
  • Buses within the university are mostly free but monthly expenses cost around (apart from rent) 200-250 GBP for your food/groceries and little expenses like notebooks and pens or basics. I think 8 hours of part-time can cover your basics except rent.

  • There are 9 different colleges with lots of flats. Each flat can accommodate up to 12 students. The east campus has Constantine, Lang with, Goodricke, Anne Lister, and David Kato. Each of these has at least 6-7 buildings with 2-3 floors. The west campus has James, Alcuin, Goworth, etc.
  • Both campuses have a medical facility along with grocery shops, cafes, restaurants, libraries, gyms, and several other facilities.
  • There are innumerable sports and cultural clubs on both campuses.
  • The popular student organisation is called YUSU. There is a club for almost every sport and activity in the world and these have their own meeting rooms.

Fees

  • I am enrolled in a 3-year course, the tuition for which is around £20,000 per annum. It is broken down into 3 installments. The first is paid in October, which is 50% and then 25% each in January and April. The tuition might increase a bit each year depending on your course.
  • The accommodation charges are between £6,000 and £9000 per year. It is paid in similar instalments as the tuition.
Monthly costs might vary from £400-£1000 depending on your lifestyle and your choices.

  • I lived near the West Campus of the University. The west campus was always very happening, now and then, there were events taking place. Other than the West campus, the university only had the East campus on the other end.
  • The west campus had facilities like a Sports center, pubs, cafe, Library, open field, and the famous lake and LongBoi.
  • I was not a part of any specific club, but every college on the west campus had its specific clubs. Wentworth College had a club, Vanbrugh College had a different club, James College had their club, and so on.
  • All the students from these colleges had joined sports clubs which were available in the Sports Center.
  • I was a member of the Hindu Association. There were Indian members from the university across courses. They hosted different activities and parties for Indian people during festivals like Diwali, etc.

Fees

  • My fee structure was:
  1. Tuition fees: 26700 GBP (equal to approximately 26.6 lakh INR. Firstly, I had to pay a deposit of 2000 GBP. Then, I had to pay the fees in 3 installments. The first was 50% of the total fee amount minus the deposit in October 2023. Then, I had to pay 25% of the remaining fees by January 2024 and the remaining 25% by February 2024.
  2. My Total Accommodation fee was 8619 GBP for 51 weeks. I had to pay monthly installments. The per week rent was 169 GBP.
  3. My other monthly expenses included groceries, travel, and miscellaneous. On average, my monthly expenses were 80-100 GBP.

There were about 8 colleges in 2019 at the university. The library was one of the biggest in North Yorkshire. The sports club was also very good. I played a few cricket matches and used to play badminton as well.

Campus is huge and very spacious, They have many study spaces and the classrooms are very well infrastructured. The teaching method and the availability of materials to study is all online makes it very easy for the student to access them.
