University of York offers 60+ scholarships across all levels, of which 22+ are accessible to Indian applicants. The university awards over INR 50 Crore in fee waivers and merit grants to international students each cycle. Currency Note: All INR conversions use the live rate of 1 GBP = INR 108 as of October 2026. Tuition is a one-year figure for Master’s, three-year for most UG courses, and most scholarships pay for one year unless marked otherwise.

Both renew in later years if academic progression is met. Science and Medicine applicants should check department pages, since some grants come from research budgets rather than the central office.

For a full list of UG programmes and their course-level fees, see the University of York programs page.

Taught Masters applicants should apply by January 2027 for the September 2027 intake. This gives departments enough window to nominate for the Vice-Chancellor’s shortlist by the March 20 cutoff.

Business, Economics and Management PG students should check departmental pages. The School for Business and Society runs its own scholarship pool separate from the central scheme. For admission timelines and English test cutoffs, see the University of York admissions page.

India-Specific Scholarships at University of York

University of York runs 3 India-targeted scholarships, plus a formal GREAT Scholarship India partnership with the UK government. These schemes are open only to Indian passport holders. Combined, they can cut fees by £10,000 to £15,000 (INR 10.80 to 16.20 Lakhs).

The GREAT Scholarship India is the most competitive India-targeted award at University of York. Only 2 to 3 awards are given per cycle across all PG departments. Applicants need an unconditional offer, a one-page motivation statement and demonstrated interest in UK-India links.

Reddit Insight: Successful GREAT Scholarship recipients at York typically have 75% or above in their Indian undergraduate degree. They also show 1 to 2 years of relevant work experience and a motivation statement tying their career plan to UK-India partnerships. The scheme does not cover living costs, so applicants layer it with the York Master’s Scholarship.

Indian applicants should treat the York India Scholarship as a safety net, since it is open to all offer-paying Indian students without a separate essay. See the University of York overview page for how the campus and course mix shape scholarship fit.

  • University of York
  • University of Leeds
  • University of Sheffield

Applicants are nominated by their proposed supervisor, so securing a supervisor fit is the first step. Research-degree applicants from India should also check Commonwealth PhD Scholarships and the Felix Scholarship if applying through linked pathways. See the University of York ranking page for subject-level research strengths and QS positions that signal supervisor depth.

External Government Scholarships for University of York Applicants

Indian students at University of York can apply for 6 major external schemes. These are run by the UK government, Commonwealth agencies and Indian trusts. The largest fully-funded award covers tuition plus living costs worth over £38,000 (INR 41.04 Lakhs).

ScholarshipAmountWho QualifiesDeadline

JN Tata EndowmentLoan scholarship INR 1 to 10 Lakhs plus gift grantIndian PG students across all disciplinesJanuary 20, 2027 (tentative)

The Chevening Scholarship is the top external pick for York applicants. The scheme asks candidates to list three universities on the application, so pairing York with a UK Top 20 peer is a common strategy. Chevening results are declared in June 2027, after York’s offer round, giving funded students time to accept.

Chevening scholars at University of York typically prepare the following before applying:

  • IELTS 7.0 overall, or TOEFL iBT 100, as the English benchmark
  • Two academic or professional references
  • Four essay responses on leadership, networking, study choice and career plan
  • 2+ years of verified work experience in a professional role

Reddit Insight: Indian applicants on r/CheveningScholarship list York as a common second or third choice. Its PG offer response is faster than the Oxford and Cambridge cycle. Successful Chevening scholars at York tend to pick MSc Development Studies, Public Policy, Economics and Environmental Science.

Applicants in Science and Engineering should check Inlaks Shivdasani and the K C Mahindra awards early, since both close by March 20. The JN Tata Endowment offers a soft-loan structure that pairs well with the York Master’s Scholarship for Indian applicants without family financial backing.

University of York Scholarships: Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. What is the highest scholarship funding Indian students can access at University of York?

Ans. The highest internal stack at University of York is £10,000 (INR 10.80 Lakhs), combining the York Master’s Scholarship and the Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship (PG). Including external awards like Chevening, Indian students can secure a fully funded package worth over £38,000 (INR 41.04 Lakhs) covering tuition and living costs for a one-year taught Master’s.

Ques. When should Indian students apply for University of York scholarships for the September 2027 intake?

Ans. Indian students should submit the main course application by January 15, 2027, since York’s main PG scholarship deadlines fall on March 20, 2027. External awards like Chevening close on November 4, 2026 and are the earliest to apply for. GREAT Scholarship India opens after unconditional offers and shuts by late March, so plan to accept the York offer by early March to stay eligible.

Ques. Do Indian applicants need a separate application for University of York scholarships?

Ans. Most internal awards at University of York are automatic after offer acceptance. The York Master’s Scholarship, York India Scholarship and departmental awards do not need a separate essay. GREAT Scholarship India, Chevening, Commonwealth and the Vice-Chancellor’s awards need a separate application with a motivation statement and sometimes referees.

Ques. Who gets the GREAT Scholarship India at University of York, and what are the odds?

Ans. Only 2 to 3 Indian PG students receive the GREAT Scholarship India at University of York each cycle, out of roughly 150 applicants. Winners usually have 75% or higher in their undergraduate, 1 to 2 years of relevant work experience, and a motivation statement linking their study plan to UK-India strategic partnerships. The award pays £10,000 (INR 10.80 Lakhs) as a fee waiver. Most recipients also apply for the York Master’s Scholarship to add an extra £5,000.

Ques. Do University of York scholarships cover living costs in York city?

Ans. Internal scholarships at University of York are tuition fee waivers, so they do not cover rent, food or transport in York city. Monthly living costs run from £1,000 to £1,300 (INR 1.08 to 1.40 Lakhs) for a student in private accommodation. For full living-cost cover, Indian applicants should layer the York Master’s Scholarship with Chevening, Commonwealth Shared or the Inlaks grant, each of which pays a monthly stipend.

Ques. Can University of York PG scholarships be stacked together?

Ans. Yes. The York Master’s Scholarship and the Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship (PG) can be held together, totalling £10,000 (INR 10.80 Lakhs). Department-level grants in Economics, Computer Science and Business can sometimes layer on top, pushing the total above £12,000 (INR 12.96 Lakhs). External awards like Chevening or GREAT Scholarship India can also be held with the internal York Master’s award, provided both schemes allow dual holding.

  • I stayed in the university accommodation because that felt safer to me and in terms of cost, it wasn’t costlier than staying off-campus. The accommodation had a laundry room and an entertainment and hangout area which was open 24x7.
  • All the buildings were access controlled and only the dorm heads had access to all the buildings and floors. I loved this because that meant that no random people could come straying on our floor and we could feel safe and secure, which was also important for my parents. The college had its own community and provided everyone with lots of different opportunities to connect and socialise.

  • There wasn't any during my time at UoY. Since I applied to my course last because I had to change my course option from Pharma to MPH.
  • I THINK ONE OF MY BATCHMATES RECEIVED ONE FOR BEING AN ONLY GIRL CHILD IN INDIA. I am not sure what the process was, and I think it was maybe 5 lakh INR. I'm not sure about this. It was although a national scholarship and I am not aware of any that UoY handed out that year.

  • Private accommodation.
  • The monthly rent was 650 GBP per month.
  • None; I had a friend here in the UK who helped me find one locally in his place.
  • I would recommend going for a hostel in case you have no one here who can locally visit the place for private accommodation.
  • If you do have someone, a private accommodation which can be shared with 2 students is also a great option.
  • My accommodation was 45 mins bus ride from Uni which was far but my part-time job was close to the house, so I chose that.

  • No there is no scholarship for my course or any other bachelor course in The University of York. There are scholarships for Masters students at The University of York as I am aware 2 of my friends had received them.
  • I am unaware of the criteria and what the process was like though. Typical award amount ranges, as per my assumption, from £4000-£10,000

  • I found my accomodation through university's website
  • Monthly rent was £500-800, depending on what room you choose, all bills (light, electricity, wifi), kitchen was included
  • No challenges encountered in facing accomodation
  • I would suggest always opt for on-campus accomodation
  • Most Indian students stay on- campus. Some opt for private accomodation in the city which is a 10 minute bus ride away

  • The university changes scholarships every year, but mostly were merit based.
  • Some my international classmates received them, one received £2,500 and the other £5,000
  • On average maybe 10% of the class may receive scholarships, but depends from course to course.
  • Every course has their own scholarships, mine didn't have specific for the course but the whole masters group had them.
  • There are country specific, race specific ones too.

  • Off campus accommodation, but it was a student hostel.
  • I searched on the web there are many websites as well for this, if you are searching for a house/housemates I would suggest Facebook groups that are already present.
  • The rent was around £900 per month (all inclusive), A ensuite room and a shared kitchen.
  • Accommodations in York are a scarce resource, be early!!
  • People start applying for them as soon as the 1st semester of the previous year. (like for 2025 they start applying in 2024 itself)
  • My accommodation was only a 10 min walk away. (The Boulevard, great place if you have good flatmates)
  • Most of the Indian students stayed on campus where rent is cheaper a bit (£715 per month) but the rooms are 1/3rd the size of what I had but the security is great!

Scholarship

  • No one on my program received any scholarship. Some people I knew from other programs from India received up to 10,000 GBP. Criteria revolved mainly around academic performance.
  • There are few country-specific scholarships but generally it can be a bit hard to get. I had decent grades and professional experience but amongst people who got scholarships were people who had done a master's prior to this one and had consistently high grades no matter which university they went to.

  • I lived off campus on Fulford Road, which was 15 minutes walk from the campus. I found the accommodation published on the spare room website, which I was checking daily. It was a two-bedroom, two-bathroom place at 425 GBP per person and I connected over a call with my flatmate before I had arrived in York to secure the place.
  • My advice to students would be to start looking at accommodations as early as they can and put spare room alerts on their phone. They shouldn't be too shy about taking up accommodations with non-Indian students, as it can often be helpful to have insights from someone who already knows the place. Off-campus flats will be the cheapest option available so make sure you have completely explored that before going for off-campus private hostels.
  • Indian students were spread across all types of accommodations, so I can't say there was a majority. There were quite a few living in the Fulford area where I was.

Scholarship

  • No, I didn't receive any scholarships but my friends did. 3-4 students received scholarships that I know, of around 5 lakhs-10 lakhs each. I did apply for it but didn't get it. I had to write an essay explaining my motivation for joining this university and the course chosen, and there were overall 5 questions.
  • Chevening scholarships are the most possible ones. You have to keep an eye on the university website to avoid missing the final date.

  • I went for on-campus accommodation with an ensuite. I tried to find private accommodation but it was very hard to find in York. I contacted agents and tried entering a room and other similar apps but was futile.
  • I ended up taking the band 3, AnneLister, a university accommodation, and I think it was the best with the most perfect lake view and cleaned room.
  • I would suggest students always opt for university accommodation; they have amazing facilities, and you are more part of the university; you won't miss many classes due to rain or harsh weather. You will be more involved and can get free food at events.

Scholarship

  • There are various scholarships, including the excellence award, young achievers scholarships, and extraordinary performances scholarships. I received the last one, which gave me a 50% scholarship on my tuition fee for the first year.
  • The university has various programs and incentives that you can enrol in to get a scholarship for your degree.
  • The scholarships can range from £1000-£10000 depending on which one you enrol in and can be used for tuition, accommodation, or living expenses depending on the scholarship terms.

  • In my first year, I lived in on-campus accommodation, as it made exploring the campus and meeting people really easy.
I found my accommodation on the university website and through university emails.
  • The monthly rent was around £750 for my college, which included access to my en-suite room, a shared kitchen with 10 other students, and a college common room with various games and entertainment. There is enough space on campus for most first-year students.
  • You are given a college of your choice based on preference and availability.
  • Most accommodation buildings are a 5-10 minute walk from your course buildings.

Scholarship

  • I had applied for a scholarship (I don't remember the name), but I did not receive the scholarship as some of the factors were out of the eligibility criteria.
  • The award amount of the scholarship was 2000 GBP, which is equal to approximately 2.1 lakh INR.
  • I don't know any of my Indian batchmates receiving a scholarship as it was never a topic of conversation. I have no idea how many students receive scholarships each year.

  • During my application for accommodation, I opted for both on-campus and off-campus accommodations. In the end, I received an off-campus accommodation, but it was worth every pound spent. I found my accommodation through the university portal for applying for accommodations.
  • The monthly rent varied from 724 GBP per month for months with 30 days and 748 GBP for months with 31 days. The maintenance and cleaning services were always ready to help with any issues, and all students also had access to the cinema room, laundry, student lounge, pool table, and PlayStation room. These facilities made living 51 weeks there very comfortable.
  • The only challenge to be noted for accommodations is the time you start looking for it. Start looking for accommodations as early as possible so that you can receive multiple offers and select the accommodation according to your preference.
  • My accommodation was approximately 1.3 km from the University. It was not far to travel by bus, so walking to the university was easy for me. There was not a specific accommodation where only Indian students lived. Indian students were spread out across multiple on & off campus accommodations.

Full-time opportunities were aplenty in the UK. The jobs during my stint there in 2018 - 19 were a lot. I had cleared a few rounds of many companies when I applied for jobs. It used to get stuck for Tier-2 visa sponsorship from the company. The average salary for a fresher was GBP 23,000 onwards. The typical way to find jobs was online through company websites job applications etc.

No, I haven't received any scholarship but I did apply for few scholarships I wasn't successful at receiving them.

My experience at an abroad university is rewarding experience. It is a time of personal growth, academic achievement, and social exploration. I often tend to encounter new ideas, perspectives, and people that expand their horizons and broaden their understanding of the world. Overall, the university experience is an important chapter in many people's lives and so in my life it has significantly impacted my personal and professional development.
