Ques. Does IIT Hyderabad M.Sc Medical Physics have a different duration than the other M.Sc programmes?
Ans. Yes. M.Sc Medical Physics at IITH runs for 3 years rather than the standard 2 years. The extra year is a mandatory clinical internship at Basavatarakam Cancer Hospital, giving students hands-on exposure to radiotherapy equipment and patient dosimetry. It is the only IIT M.Sc programme with an AERB-approved clinical training component built into the curriculum.
Ques. Can M.Sc students at IITH transition into the PhD programme?
Ans. IIT Hyderabad does allow M.Sc students to transition into the PhD programme, subject to departmental approval and satisfactory academic performance. A student interested in this path should speak to their faculty advisor by the end of the first year, as the transition involves course credit adjustments and confirmation of a thesis supervisor. There is no guaranteed right of conversion but it is a practised route for high-performing students.
Ques. Is the M.Sc Mathematics and Computing programme different from a pure Mathematics M.Sc?
Ans. Yes. The Mathematics and Computing specialization blends core Mathematics with computing-oriented subjects such as numerical methods, programming, and discrete mathematics, making it relevant for data science and algorithm roles after graduation. Students who want a traditional pure-mathematics focus may find the programme more applied than expected.
Ques. Do M.Sc students at IITH get campus placement support?
Ans. IIT Hyderabad does not publish a dedicated M.Sc placement report. The placement cell’s primary focus is on B.Tech and M.Tech students. M.Sc students can register with the placement office and some receive offers in software, analytics, and research roles. However, there is no structured placement drive for M.Sc, so students should actively build profiles and apply for research positions alongside campus opportunities.
Ques. What is the fee difference between the Medical Physics programme and the other M.Sc programmes at IITH?
Ans. Chemistry, Mathematics and Computing, and Physics each cost INR 2,85,556 in total over four semesters. Medical Physics, being self-sponsored with specialised clinical infrastructure, costs INR 8,97,556 over six semesters. The higher fee reflects AERB-approved clinical training and the longer 3-year duration. No MHRD stipend is available for any of these M.Sc tracks.
Ques. Which JAM paper should a student appear in for each M.Sc specialization at IITH?
Ans. For M.Sc Chemistry, the Chemistry (CY) paper is required. For M.Sc Physics and Medical Physics, the Physics (PH) paper is needed. For M.Sc Mathematics and Computing, the Mathematics (MA) paper applies. Candidates should select the correct paper at the time of JAM registration, as changing the paper after registration is not permitted.
