IITH Ph.D FAQs

Ques. What is the Special Direct PhD track at IITH and how does it differ from the standard Direct PhD?

Ans. The Special Direct PhD is a separate admission category for students with a CGPA of 9.0 or above in their qualifying degree (BTech or MSc). The key advantage is an enhanced fellowship of INR 80,000 per month for four years, compared to the standard JRF of INR 37,000 per month. The academic programme and departmental requirements remain the same, but the much higher stipend makes this track highly competitive with limited seats.

Ques. Who is eligible for rolling admission at IITH PhD and how does it work?

Ans. Candidates who hold a valid external fellowship such as CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF, DST-INSPIRE, DBT, or ICMR are eligible for rolling admission. This means they can apply to IITH at any time of the year, independently of the July or January intake cycles. Rolling admission requires a vacancy in the relevant department and is subject to faculty availability, but it removes the constraint of applying within a fixed window.

Ques. How does the IITH PhD admission process differ for regular and external candidates?

Ans. Regular candidates must appear for a department-specific written test followed by an in-person interview at the Hyderabad campus. External candidates (employed or based remotely) may attend interviews online. Both groups undergo the same departmental evaluation. The written test covers domain knowledge rather than general aptitude. Candidates applying to interdisciplinary CIP tracks use a separate Zoho application form rather than the main admissions portal.

Ques. What is the IITH PhD Top-up Scholarship and how can a scholar apply?

Ans. The IITH PhD Top-up Scholarship provides an additional INR 10,000 per month on top of the regular fellowship, awarded to roughly 50 scholars annually from endowment funds. It targets scholars facing financial hardship who reside on campus. The duration is a maximum of 12 months. Scholars apply through the giving.iith.ac.in portal. The effective monthly income for a JRF-level scholar receiving the top-up becomes INR 47,000.

Ques. Can a student from a non-IIT background apply for IITH PhD without GATE?

Ans. Students from non-IIT and non-CFTI institutions typically need a valid GATE score or a national-level fellowship (JRF from CSIR, UGC, DST, etc.) to apply for IITH PhD. The GATE exemption applies specifically to graduates from IITs and CFTIs with a CGPA of 8.0 or above. Candidates from private universities should check the department-specific eligibility document on the IITH PhD portal before applying.
