GGU Ph.D. IPE FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between VRET and VRET-Exempted admission categories?
Ans. VRET (Vishwavidyalaya Research Entrance Test) is the main admission pathway where candidates appear for a 120-minute entrance examination followed by personal interview and research proposal presentation. The final merit is calculated with 70% weightage for VRET score and 30% for interview performance. VRET-Exempted category is for candidates who are exempted from the entrance test, including NET/JRF qualified candidates, working professionals with No-Objection Certificate from their employer, international students, and employees of government/autonomous institutions. For VRET-Exempted candidates, merit is based on academic background (50 marks), personal interview (20 marks), and research proposal presentation (30 marks). Both categories have separate merit lists prepared by the DRC.
Ques. What is the pre-Ph.D. coursework and how long does it take?
Ans. All Ph.D. scholars, regardless of admission category, must complete pre-Ph.D. coursework for a minimum of one semester (six months). The coursework consists of three papers worth 12 credits total. The first paper is a compulsory course on research methodology, quantitative methods, computer applications, and research and publication ethics. The second and third papers are subject-specific courses proposed by the Department of Industrial and Production Engineering. Scholars must obtain a minimum of 55% marks in coursework to continue in the program. If a scholar fails in the first attempt, they get one additional attempt after paying due fees. Successful completion of coursework is mandatory for all Ph.D. students before proceeding to research work.
Ques. What are the fellowship and financial support options available for Ph.D. scholars?
Ans. Full-time Ph.D. scholars admitted through VRET and not receiving any other financial assistance from funding agencies are entitled to a Non-NET fellowship of 8,000 rupees per month and contingency of 10,000 rupees per year for engineering students as per UGC norms. Additionally, eligible candidates in engineering departments may be eligible for AICTE Doctoral Fellowship (ADF) 2025-26, subject to meeting the eligibility criteria and AICTE approval. Scholars can also apply for scholarships through the National Scholarship Portal for SC/ST, OBC, EWS, and minority categories. VRET-Exempted category candidates do not receive Non-NET fellowship initially but become eligible after qualifying the VRET test conducted after their admission. Fellowship privileges may be withdrawn for scholars involved in acts of indiscipline.
Ques. Can working professionals pursue Ph.D. on a part-time basis?
Ans. Yes, the Ph.D. program can be pursued on a part-time basis by working professionals. Such candidates must apply under the VRET-Exempted category and submit a No-Objection Certificate from their employer in the prescribed format. The NOC must clearly state that the candidate is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis, that official duties permit sufficient time for research, and that the candidate will be relieved from duty if required to complete coursework. Part-time scholars must fulfill all conditions stipulated in the Ph.D. Regulations 2023. The duration of the program may be extended for part-time scholars as per university norms. However, all coursework requirements and research standards remain the same as for full-time scholars.
Ques. What is the research focus of the Industrial and Production Engineering Ph.D. program?
Ans. The Ph.D. program in Industrial and Production Engineering focuses on advanced research in manufacturing systems, operations management, quality control, production optimization, supply chain management, and related areas. The program emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and practical applications relevant to India's manufacturing sector. Research scholars work under the guidance of experienced faculty members who are actively engaged in industry-relevant research projects. The program encourages interdisciplinary and collaborative research, allowing scholars to co-opt co-supervisors for allied or interdisciplinary research areas. Scholars are expected to contribute original research through their dissertation and publications in peer-reviewed journals. The program also provides opportunities for research internships and collaborations with leading industrial organizations.
Ques. What happens if a scholar fails to complete coursework or meet academic requirements?
Ans. If a Ph.D. scholar fails to qualify the pre-Ph.D. coursework examination in the first attempt, they are given one additional attempt to clear the examination after paying the required fees. However, if the scholar fails to pass the coursework examination in both attempts, their admission to the Ph.D. program will be automatically cancelled. Additionally, the residency period for scholars who fail in the first attempt is not extended in continuity; only one semester (six months) is reckoned for successful completion of coursework. Scholars must maintain a minimum of 55% marks in coursework to be eligible to continue in the program and proceed to research work. The university reserves the right to cancel admission at any point if it is found that minimum eligibility requirements are not fulfilled or if false documentation has been submitted.
