GGU Ph.D. (RTSD) FAQs
Ques. What is the research focus of the Ph.D. program in Rural Technology and Social Development?
Ans. The Ph.D. program in Rural Technology and Social Development focuses on advanced research addressing rural development challenges through appropriate technology, sustainable livelihoods, social innovation, and community development. The program emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and practical applications relevant to India's rural development goals. Research scholars work under the guidance of experienced faculty members who are actively engaged in field-based research projects with rural communities. The program encourages research in areas such as appropriate technology design and implementation, sustainable agriculture, rural entrepreneurship, community-based resource management, and social innovation for rural contexts. Scholars are expected to contribute original research through their dissertation and publications in peer-reviewed journals. The program also provides opportunities for research collaborations with NGOs, government agencies, and international development organizations working in rural development.
Ques. What field work and community engagement opportunities are available during the Ph.D. program?
Ans. The Ph.D. program includes extensive field-based research opportunities with direct engagement in rural communities across Chhattisgarh and India. Scholars conduct mandatory field visits to rural areas as part of their coursework and research. The program emphasizes action research where scholars work directly with rural communities to understand development challenges and test technology solutions. Scholars undertake practical training in participatory rural appraisal, community mobilization, technology assessment, and social impact evaluation. The dissertation project involves original field research often conducted through long-term engagement with rural communities. The department provides financial support through departmental funds for field research and community engagement activities. These field-based components ensure that scholars gain hands-on experience in rural development practice and develop skills essential for professional work in rural development organizations.
Ques. How does the program prepare scholars for careers in rural development and social innovation?
Ans. The Ph.D. program prepares scholars for diverse career opportunities in government rural development agencies, NGOs, social enterprises, research institutions, and international development organizations. The curriculum combines rigorous coursework in research methodology, rural development studies, and social innovation with practical field training. Scholars develop expertise in technology assessment and adaptation, community development planning, sustainable livelihoods promotion, and social impact evaluation. The program emphasizes both research skills and practical applications relevant to India's rural development challenges. Faculty members are actively engaged in rural development projects and community partnerships, providing scholars with exposure to real-world development issues. Scholars are encouraged to pursue competitive examinations and professional certifications in development studies after completing their Ph.D. The alumni network and faculty connections often facilitate job placements and research opportunities in development organizations.
Ques. What is the pre-Ph.D. coursework and how long does it take?
Ans. All Ph.D. scholars, regardless of admission category, must complete pre-Ph.D. coursework for a minimum of one semester (six months). The coursework consists of three papers worth 12 credits total. The first paper is a compulsory course on research methodology, quantitative methods, computer applications, and research and publication ethics. The second and third papers are subject-specific courses in rural technology and social development proposed by the Department of Rural Technology and Social Development. Scholars must obtain a minimum of 55% marks in coursework to continue in the program. If a scholar fails in the first attempt, they get one additional attempt after paying due fees. Successful completion of coursework is mandatory for all Ph.D. students before proceeding to research work. The coursework provides foundational knowledge and research skills essential for conducting original research in rural development.
Ques. Can working professionals and NGO workers pursue Ph.D. on a part-time basis?
Ans. Yes, the Ph.D. program can be pursued on a part-time basis by working professionals and NGO workers. Such candidates must apply under the VRET-Exempted category and submit a No-Objection Certificate from their employer or organization in the prescribed format. The NOC must clearly state that the candidate is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis, that official duties permit sufficient time for research, and that the candidate will be relieved from duty if required to complete coursework. Part-time scholars must fulfill all conditions stipulated in the Ph.D. Regulations 2023. The duration of the program may be extended for part-time scholars as per university norms. However, all coursework requirements and research standards remain the same as for full-time scholars. Part-time scholars can also avail Non-NET fellowship after qualifying the VRET test conducted after admission.
Ques. What happens if a scholar fails to complete coursework or meet academic requirements?
Ans. If a Ph.D. scholar fails to qualify the pre-Ph.D. coursework examination in the first attempt, they are given one additional attempt to clear the examination after paying the required fees. However, if the scholar fails to pass the coursework examination in both attempts, their admission to the Ph.D. program will be automatically cancelled. Additionally, the residency period for scholars who fail in the first attempt is not extended in continuity; only one semester (six months) is reckoned for successful completion of coursework. Scholars must maintain a minimum of 55% marks in coursework to be eligible to continue in the program and proceed to research work. The university reserves the right to cancel admission at any point if it is found that minimum eligibility requirements are not fulfilled or if false documentation has been submitted. Scholars are expected to maintain academic integrity and adhere to the university's code of conduct throughout their Ph.D. program.
