DTU: Students' Opinion

AI-Generated Summary based on 47 Reviews

The JEE Mains exam is a mandatory and challenging test for students in India, especially noted for its tough physics section, and is required for admission to Delhi Technological University (DTU). DTU boasts a highly qualified faculty, including scientists and IES professionals, with a faculty-to-student ratio of about 70:1. The university conducts two exams per semester and uses relative grading, which will be replaced with a minimum passing mark of 35 next year.

Environmental Engineering is one of the courses offered, with 6 professors, 2 guest faculty, and 80 students. The tuition fee begins at approximately Rs. 1 lakh annually and increases to Rs. 1.78 lakh by the fourth year. Additionally, food expenses are not included, with mess food quality rated poorly. DTU offers various scholarships and financial aid for students from economically weaker sections. For instance, students with family incomes under Rs. 4.5 lakh can avail a 50% tuition fee waiver, and those under Rs. 2.5 lakh can receive a full waiver.

DTU has a strong placement record, with over 300 companies visiting annually. In the 2023-24 placement season, the highest package offered was Rs. 82.05 lakh per annum (LPA), with an average of Rs. 25.22 LPA. In 2019, 1306 out of 1495 students were placed, with a top package of Rs. 1.27 crore and an 11.17 LPA average. Nearly 95% of students secure jobs, while others pursue further studies or competitive exams. Internships are available from the third year, with companies like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon offering stipends between Rs. 30,000 and Rs. 2 lakh per month.

Despite high fees, DTU provides opportunities for scholarships and student loans, maintaining a robust placement cell to ensure high student placement rates with competitive packages.

Annual fees cover tuition, co-curricular activities, examinations, and medical charges. Hostel is optional and charged separately at around INR 60,000 per year. SC/ST and EWS students are eligible for fee concession under Delhi Government norms.

Ques. What does B.Tech Environmental Engineering at DTU cover?

Ans. B.Tech Environmental Engineering at DTU covers water supply and treatment, air pollution control, solid and hazardous waste management, environmental impact assessment, and ecological engineering. Students learn to design sustainable infrastructure for managing natural resources and mitigating industrial pollution. The programme also covers environmental laws and regulations relevant to India’s regulatory framework for pollution control.

Ques. How many seats are available in B.Tech Environmental Engineering at DTU?

Ans. B.Tech Environmental Engineering at DTU has 60 seats. Of these, 85% are reserved for candidates who completed Class 12 from schools within NCT of Delhi. The remaining 15% are open to all-India applicants through JAC Delhi counselling based on their JEE Main merit rank. Admission to the programme is via the same JAC Delhi process used for all DTU engineering branches.

Ques. What career options are available after B.Tech Environmental Engineering from DTU?

Ans. Graduates work in environmental consulting firms, municipal corporations, pollution control boards, infrastructure companies, and research organisations. Government openings at CPCB, DPCC, and state environment departments actively recruit environmental engineers. Many graduates also pursue M.Tech in Environmental Engineering or Civil Engineering at IITs and NITs, or appear for civil services examinations in technical categories.

Ques. Are there government jobs specifically for B.Tech Environmental Engineering graduates?

Ans. Yes. Environmental engineers are eligible for recruitment in Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), and municipal corporations. Some PSUs and government infrastructure organisations such as NMCG and CPCB recruit environmental engineers for pollution monitoring and remediation projects. GATE in Environmental Science and Engineering is the key qualifying exam for such positions.

Ques. Is Environmental Engineering at DTU a good choice compared to Civil Engineering?

Ans. Both branches overlap in water supply, hydraulics, and infrastructure. Environmental Engineering has a narrower but growing specialisation in pollution control, green technology, and sustainability policy, which is increasingly important given India’s environmental regulations. Civil Engineering typically has a larger placement base and wider industry demand. Environmental Engineering at DTU suits students committed to sustainability and environmental governance rather than mainstream civil construction roles.

DTU: 2 Answered Questions

Should I opt for DTU mechanical or IIIT Delhi CSE?

Sanjana KapoorLives in New Delhi

The choice depends on what matters the most to you.

If placements, faculty and research opportunities are your top most priority, choose IIIT Delhi CSE. In this respect, IIITD CSE beats DTU Mechanical by a large margin. But if you want the best of campus, college environment, cultural fests and brand name, DTU Mechanical is a much better choice.

I would personally recommend IIIT Delhi, as it offers top notch placements. But if you’re truly passionate about Mechanical, choose that branch. Do not take your interest for granted while choosing your branch/degree.

Are courses in DTU and NSIT flexible? Can students from lower branches study a minor in C.S. easily?

Akriti Banerjeelives in New Delhi

As an NSUT student, the new CBCS (choice based credit system) allows you to choose your fields of study. This makes for more flexible courses. Also, NSUT has an excellent coding environment which will help you for your minor in Computer Science. Many students over there pursue coding, despite being from a branch other than IT/COE.

In DTU, you will have electives starting from 5th semester. These are department and general electives. IIIT Delhi offers the most flexible courses. Other than some fixed category credits, all the subjects are choice based.

Thus, in terms of providing flexible courses, this is the order of preference- IIITD> NSUT>DTU.
