Ques. What is the fee for the Ph.D. in Design at DTU?
Ans. The total academic fee for the three-year full-time programme is INR 65,100. Year 1 costs INR 33,700 and each of Year 2 and Year 3 costs INR 15,700, covering tuition, examination, and allied charges. Hostel accommodation at DTU is optional and charged separately. SC/ST students from Delhi may apply for fee reimbursement under the Delhi Government Post-Matric Scholarship scheme.
Ques. What entrance exam is needed for the DTU Ph.D. in Design?
Ans. DTU prefers candidates with a valid UGC NET score or a GATE score in a relevant discipline. Candidates without a qualifying national-level score may appear in the DTU Research Entrance Test conducted at the Department of Design Innovations. All shortlisted applicants are called for a written test and personal interview, which may include a portfolio review to assess research aptitude and design background.

Ans. Research at DTU’s Department of Design Innovations spans product design, interaction design, visual communication, transportation design, design thinking methodologies, and human-centred design. Ques. Is a portfolio required to apply for the DTU Ph.D. in Design?
Ans. Candidates are advised to prepare a design portfolio and a research proposal before appearing for the interview at the Department of Design Innovations. The portfolio demonstrates your prior design work and research capability, which is assessed during the personal interview stage. There is no national-level portfolio-based exam for the Ph.D. The portfolio is evaluated internally by the DTU selection committee.
Ques. What fellowship support is available for Ph.D. Design scholars at DTU?
Ans. UGC JRF holders receive INR 37,000 per month for the first two years, escalating to INR 42,000 per month as Senior Research Fellows. DTU awards an institute research fellowship of INR 15,000 to 20,000 per month to full-time scholars who do not hold an external fellowship, subject to merit. GATE-admitted scholars receive INR 12,400 per month through AICTE.
Ques. What is the minimum qualification for the DTU Ph.D. in Design?
Ans. Candidates must hold a postgraduate degree in Design, Fine Arts, Architecture, Engineering, or a relevant discipline from a recognised university with at least 55% aggregate marks (50% for SC/ST/PwD). An M.Des from a recognised institution is the most common qualifying degree. Candidates with an M.Tech in a design-related specialisation or an MFA may also be eligible for consideration.
