IISc Ph.D FAQs

Ques. How does the MHRD fellowship at IISc compare to the PhD programme fee?

Ans. The MHRD Doctoral Fellowship pays ₹37,000 to ₹42,000 per month to all qualifying scholars. The ₹1,15,800 total programme fee is recovered in under 4 months of stipend. PMRF scholars receive ₹70,000 to ₹80,000 per month, among the highest doctoral stipends in India. Fellowship continuation requires satisfactory annual progress reviews.

Ques. What entrance exam should I appear for if I want to do a PhD in Biological Sciences at IISc?

Ans. For biological sciences specialisations (Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Neuroscience, Ecological Sciences, Biosystems Science), the primary qualifying exam is JGEEBILS (Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences) conducted by NCBS. CSIR-NET Life Sciences is also accepted. GATE is the route for Bioengineering. Verify the specific qualifying exam for your chosen department in the official IISc admissions prospectus.

Ques. What GATE score is typically needed for a PhD in CSE or Electrical Engineering at IISc?

Ans. IISc is the most selective GATE-based PhD destination in India. Departments like Computer Science and Automation and Electrical Engineering typically shortlist from the top 0.5 to 1 percent of GATE qualifiers. However, GATE score is only the first filter; a departmental written test and research aptitude interview weigh heavily. Strong publications or research experience significantly improve final selection outcomes.

Ques. What is the typical duration to complete a PhD at IISc?

Ans. The minimum duration is 3 years; typical completion time at IISc is 5 to 6 years for most engineering and science disciplines. The programme combines comprehensive coursework, candidacy examinations, and original thesis research requiring multiple publications before submission. The maximum allowed duration is 6 years, with extensions possible on doctoral committee approval.

Ques. Does IISc offer PhD in interdisciplinary areas crossing traditional departments?

Ans. Yes. Programmes like Brain and Computational and Data Sciences, Cyber-Physical Systems, Biosystems Science and Engineering, and Computational and Data Sciences explicitly span departments. IISc also offers Integrated PhD programmes for Bachelor’s graduates in science disciplines through separate application tracks. Candidates should verify eligibility requirements for each track on the IISc admissions page before applying.
