NLUO Cuttack Ph.D: Fees 2026, Course Duration, Dates, Eligibility

Ans. Full-time PhD scholars at NLUO must complete a minimum residency of 28 months at the Cuttack campus, covering coursework, supervised research, and seminar presentations before the Doctoral Committee. Part-time candidates who are employed in a legal or academic capacity have different residency obligations and typically take longer to finish. The total PhD duration ranges from a minimum of three years to a maximum of six years, with extension possible subject to Doctoral Committee approval.

Ans. Full-time PhD scholars enrolled at NLUO are eligible for the institutional fellowship of INR 30,000 per month with a 10% annual increment, subject to satisfactory annual progress review by the Doctoral Committee. Continuation in subsequent years depends on thesis milestones and supervisor recommendation. Part-time scholars and those already holding external fellowships like UGC JRF are typically not eligible for the NLUO fellowship simultaneously. Ans. The Interdisciplinary PhD track has 5 seats for candidates whose research sits at the boundary of law and another discipline such as economics, political science, sociology, criminology, environmental science, or public policy. Applicants must hold a relevant Master’s in the non-law discipline and propose a topic that meaningfully engages with legal questions. The track is not for purely social science research without a law component. Candidates are evaluated on research proposal clarity and feasibility at the Doctoral Committee interview.

Ans. Candidates who have cleared UGC NET (with or without JRF) or UGC JRF in Law, or hold an M.Phil. in Law from a recognised university, are fully exempt from the NLUO PhD entrance test. They go directly to the Doctoral Committee interview. To claim the exemption, candidates must upload their NET/JRF scorecard or M.Phil. certificate at the time of application. The exemption covers only the written test. All candidates must still attend the interview.

Ans. NLUO PhD scholars are encouraged to present papers at national and international law conferences as part of doctoral training. Whether NLUO provides institutional travel grants depends on Doctoral Committee approval and the scholar’s programme standing. Scholars holding external fellowships like UGC JRF or ICSSR can access those bodies’ separate conference and travel grant schemes independently.
