BU PGDGC FAQs
Ques. Is the P.G. Diploma in Guidance and Counselling in Education at Bharathiar University a full-time or part-time course, and can working professionals apply?
Ans. This is a full-time, on-campus programme offered by the Department of Education at Bharathiar University. It requires regular attendance at the university campus in Coimbatore. Working professionals who cannot attend classes regularly would find it difficult to pursue this course in its current format. However, Bharathiar University's Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE) does offer some related programmes in distance mode, which may be more suitable for working professionals. For the full-time diploma, candidates are expected to be present on campus throughout the academic year.
Ques. What is the difference between the P.G. Diploma in Guidance and Counselling in Education and the P.G. Diploma in Career Guidance for Executives offered at Bharathiar University?
Ans. Both are PG Diploma programmes at Bharathiar University but cater to different audiences and career goals. The P.G. Diploma in Guidance and Counselling in Education (offered by the Department of Education) focuses on counselling within educational settings - schools, colleges, and educational institutions - covering topics like educational psychology, student welfare, and academic counselling. The P.G. Diploma in Career Guidance for Executives (offered by the Department of Extension, Career Guidance and Student Welfare) is oriented towards career counselling in professional and corporate environments. The fees and seat intake also differ between the two programmes.
Ques. Does completing this diploma make me eligible for the M.A. Career Guidance programme at Bharathiar University?
Ans. Yes, graduates of the P.G. Diploma in Career Guidance for Executives at Bharathiar University are eligible for lateral entry into the M.A. Career Guidance programme. While the P.G. Diploma in Guidance and Counselling in Education is a related programme, candidates are advised to confirm lateral entry eligibility directly with the Department of Extension, Career Guidance and Student Welfare or the Admissions Office before applying. The M.A. Career Guidance (Lateral Entry) programme is specifically designed for those who have completed a relevant PG Diploma, providing a clear academic progression pathway.
Ques. With only 10 seats available, how competitive is the admission process and what UG percentage is typically required?
Ans. With just 10 seats, admission to this programme is quite competitive. Selection is based on the aggregate marks obtained in the UG degree (up to the 5th semester for semester-pattern courses), excluding Part I/II Languages and General Knowledge/NSS subjects. While the university does not officially publish a minimum percentage cutoff for this diploma, candidates with higher UG scores naturally have a better chance. In case of a large number of applicants, the university also reserves the right to conduct an entrance examination or interview. Candidates from reserved categories (SC/ST/BC/MBC) benefit from Tamil Nadu Government reservation norms.
Ques. What career opportunities are available after completing the P.G. Diploma in Guidance and Counselling in Education from Bharathiar University?
Ans. Graduates of this programme can pursue careers as school counsellors, college counsellors, educational guidance officers, student welfare officers, and career advisors in schools, colleges, NGOs, and government educational institutions. The programme also equips graduates to work in community mental health settings and social welfare organisations. In Tamil Nadu, school counsellors are increasingly being appointed in government and private schools under state education initiatives. Graduates can also pursue further studies such as M.Ed., M.A. Psychology, or M.A. Career Guidance to enhance their qualifications and career prospects.
Ques. Can I apply for this programme if I completed my UG degree from a university other than Bharathiar University, and are there any additional fees for non-BU students?
Ans. Yes, candidates who have completed their UG degree from any recognised university (not just Bharathiar University) are eligible to apply for this programme. However, there is a difference in the Other Fees component for non-BU students. For most PG programmes at Bharathiar University, BU students pay Rs. 4,840/- as other fees while students from other institutions pay Rs. 5,360/- (a difference of Rs. 520/-). This difference covers the Recognition Fee and Matricula Fee applicable to students from other universities. For the P.G. Diploma in Guidance and Counselling in Education, the total fee is stated as a lump sum of Rs. 7,710/- per annum including caution deposit, and candidates should confirm the exact breakup for non-BU students with the Department of Education at the time of admission.
