MGR Medical University MPT Orthopaedics FAQs
Ques. Is NEET PG required for MPT Orthopaedics admission at TNMGRMU-affiliated colleges?
Ans. No, NEET PG is not required for MPT Orthopaedics at TNMGRMU-affiliated colleges. NEET PG is used exclusively for MD and MS medical postgraduate admissions. MPT admission at TNMGRMU is conducted by affiliated colleges based on BPT aggregate marks, and shortlisted candidates may be called for an entrance test or personal interview depending on the number of applications received. Candidates with a BPT degree and a minimum of 50% aggregate are eligible to apply directly at the affiliated college.
Ques. What subjects are covered in the MPT Orthopaedics programme at TNMGRMU?
Ans. The curriculum covers advanced musculoskeletal assessment and manual therapy techniques, orthopaedic physiotherapy for fractures, joint replacements, and spinal conditions, electrotherapy and physical agents, post-operative rehabilitation protocols for hip and knee arthroplasty, sports injury management, and ergonomics and occupational therapy. In the second year, students complete a clinical research dissertation on an orthopaedic physiotherapy topic under faculty supervision, with data collection from the affiliated hospital’s orthopaedic and rehabilitation units.
Ques. What career options are available after MPT Orthopaedics from TNMGRMU?
Ans. MPT Orthopaedics graduates work as senior physiotherapists, orthopaedic rehabilitation specialists, and physiotherapy department heads in government hospitals, private hospital chains, orthopaedic clinics, and sports medicine centres. Some graduates establish independent physiotherapy clinics or join professional sports teams as team physiotherapists. Government posts for physiotherapists in Tamil Nadu Medical Services and ESIC are also open to MPT holders. Academic roles as physiotherapy faculty at BPT or MPT colleges are another common career path.
Ques. Can a BPT graduate with less than 55% aggregate apply for MPT Orthopaedics at TNMGRMU?
Ans. The minimum eligibility for MPT at TNMGRMU-affiliated colleges is 50% aggregate in BPT (45% for SC/ST/OBC candidates). A candidate with 50% to 54% aggregate meets the eligibility threshold and can apply, but admission is competitive and merit-based. In practice, candidates with higher aggregates are preferred. Individual affiliated colleges may also have their own minimum cut-off above the university minimum. Candidates with lower aggregates may improve their chances by applying at multiple colleges or in subsequent admission cycles.
Ques. What is the difference between MPT Orthopaedics and MPT Musculoskeletal and Sports?
Ans. MPT Orthopaedics is a broader specialisation covering the full range of musculoskeletal conditions including fractures, joint replacements, spinal disorders, and paediatric orthopaedic conditions. MPT Musculoskeletal and Sports is a more focused specialisation concentrating on sports injuries, athlete rehabilitation, and performance enhancement. Both programmes deal with the musculoskeletal system but differ in clinical focus and target patient populations. TNMGRMU offers both specialisations at different affiliated colleges, so candidates should confirm the specific specialisation available at their chosen institution.
Ques. How is the clinical training structured in MPT Orthopaedics at TNMGRMU colleges?
Ans. Clinical training is conducted in the orthopaedic wards, physiotherapy outpatient department, and rehabilitation unit of the affiliated teaching hospital under the guidance of senior physiotherapists and orthopaedic surgeons. Students observe and participate in post-operative physiotherapy sessions, gait retraining, prosthetics fitting, and pain management procedures. The quality of clinical exposure depends on the hospital’s orthopaedic caseload, so prospective students are advised to verify the affiliated hospital’s orthopaedic department capacity and bed strength before selecting a college for MPT admission.
