AIIMS Rishikesh Admission Process

Admission to AIIMS Rishikesh programmes is driven by national-level entrance examinations. The institute does not conduct its own UG or PG entrance tests. All admissions follow merit-based selection with government of India reservation norms (EWS 10%, OBC-NCL 27%, SC 15%, ST 7.5%, PWD 5%).

MBBS Admission

MBBS admission is exclusively through NEET UG. AIIMS Rishikesh is part of the INI (Institute of National Importance) category in MCC counselling. Candidates must qualify NEET UG and register on mcc.nic.in for INI CQ (INI combined) counselling. AIIMS Rishikesh participates in INI CQ counselling alongside AIIMS Delhi, Jodhpur, Bhopal, Patna, Bhubaneswar, and other AIIMS. General category closing rank for MBBS at AIIMS Rishikesh in recent cycles has typically fallen within the top 800 to 1,500 NEET UG ranks, significantly higher than private medical colleges but below AIIMS Delhi (top 50 ranks).

  • Eligibility: 10+2 with PCB 60% (General), 50% (SC/ST/PWD), minimum age 17 years
  • Qualifying exam: NEET UG (no other exam is accepted)
  • Counselling: MCC INI CQ counselling portal (mcc.nic.in)
  • Reservation: EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PWD categories as per government norms

B.Sc Allied Health and Nursing Admission

B.Sc Allied Health Science and B.Sc Nursing admissions are through the AIIMS BSc Entrance Examination conducted by AIIMS New Delhi. Eligibility requires 10+2 with PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and minimum 60% marks. Results and counselling are conducted centrally for all AIIMS by AIIMS New Delhi.

MD / MS / MDS Admission (PG Level)

PG admissions are through INI-CET (Institute of National Importance Combined Entrance Test), conducted twice a year (January and May/June cycles) by AIIMS New Delhi. Eligibility requires a completed MBBS degree with NMC registration and completion of compulsory rotating internship. INI-CET is a computer-based test of 200 questions covering all clinical and non-clinical subjects. Candidates who qualify are allotted to AIIMS Rishikesh through centralised AIIMS PG counselling.

DM / M.Ch Super-Specialty Admission

Super-specialty admissions are through NEET SS conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE). Eligibility requires a completed MD, MS, or relevant PG degree. NEET SS is held once a year, and counselling for INI institutions is conducted separately by AIIMS New Delhi.

AIIMS Rishikesh Placements and Career Outcomes

AIIMS Rishikesh does not have conventional campus placements in the industry sense. Graduate outcomes are structured around clinical career pathways, government service, higher studies, and academic medicine.

Note: AIIMS Rishikesh is a government medical institution. MBBS graduates are required to complete a mandatory one-year rotating internship (stipend paid by the government). There is no private placement cell or industry-facing placement process. Career outcomes are determined by NEET PG rank, government service, private practice choices, or academic medicine pathways.

AIIMS Rishikesh Rankings

AIIMS Rishikesh is consistently ranked among the top 15 medical institutions in India by NIRF and holds a strong position among the second-generation AIIMS established after 2000.

Ranking BodyCategory2025 RankScore
NIRFMedical1365.02
NIRFOverall78Not published

AIIMS Rishikesh does not currently appear in international medical rankings such as QS World University Rankings by Subject or THE World University Rankings. Its NIRF Medical rank of 13 places it ahead of most government and private medical colleges in India, behind only the oldest AIIMS campuses (Delhi, Jodhpur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar) in the government AIIMS family.

AIIMS Rishikesh Campus and Infrastructure

AIIMS Rishikesh is situated in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, in the foothills of the Himalayas along the banks of the Ganga. The campus is on Virbhadra Road, approximately 5 km from Rishikesh Railway Station. The location is distinctive for medical research in high-altitude medicine and hill-region health challenges.

The attached tertiary hospital has 960 operational beds, up from the 200 beds at inauguration in 2013. The hospital operates 24x7 emergency services, a dedicated Trauma Surgery division, an Emergency Medicine unit, a heli-ambulance service, and drone-based healthcare outreach for remote Himalayan communities. There are 94 specialised clinics and a telemedicine network connecting AIIMS Rishikesh to rural health centres.

Campus facilities include a central library, computer labs, sports complex, and separate boys’ and girls’ hostels with annual fees of up to INR 17,350 each. Over 200 faculty members support undergraduate and postgraduate teaching across all clinical and non-clinical departments. A dedicated Certificate in High Altitude Medicine programme reflects the campus’s unique geographic positioning.

AIIMS Rishikesh vs AIIMS Bhopal vs AIIMS Jodhpur

Aspirants who qualify NEET UG at a rank range relevant for AIIMS Rishikesh typically also consider AIIMS Bhopal and AIIMS Jodhpur, both from the same PMSSY cohort of Institutes of National Importance.

AIIMS Rishikesh: 55 Answered Questions

Which one should I opt for AIIMS Delhi B.Sc (Hons.) Nursing or AIIMS Rishikesh B.Sc (Hons.) Nursing

RadiantVessel

Obviously, it is B.Sc Nursing from AIIMS Delhi. The academics and clinical exposure are very good. Academics will help you to crack M.Sc Nursing or direct exam-based recruitments. Clinical exposure will help you to be a good nurse. As far as opportunities are concerned, you can easily compare the number of nurses to the number of BDS doctors. The salary of a nursing professional is around 60–70k in a central institute, and they have only 6 hours of duty per day to earn that money. With many new hospitals starting, opportunities for nursing professionals are increasing day by day. If you have done your nursing from AIIMS, you will be preferred in any interview throughout the country. In contrast, government opportunities for BDS are very limited, and post-graduation seats are scarce. There are many "jhola chaap" dentists who are doing work without a degree, leading to less scope for stabilization as a dentist. Finally, if you get a government job, there is not much difference in salary between a dentist and a nursing officer, but the workload for a dentist is much more compared to that of a nurse.

Is AIIMS Rishikesh too strict and disciplined for students?

Muskan Shafi

There is a certain level of strictness and discipline in medical colleges. A medical student needs to be dedicated and disciplined to ace academics. Hence, medical colleges do maintain strict rules and regulations to train students to become better doctors in future.

It is a misconception that AIIMS Rishikesh is too strict and disciplined for students. In comparison, with other medical colleges such as MAMC, AFMC Pune and other AIIMS, AIIMS Rishikesh is less strict. However, the institution is very disciplined concerning attendance, assignment submissions and behaviour of students on campus. Some professors do not allow latecomers as a way of teaching students the importance of discipline. Sometimes, students might experience academic pressure and the campus environment at AIIMS Rishikesh will help students experience peace and serenity.

In case of any injustice, students can reach out to the study body welfare association at AIIMS Rishikesh which is dedicated to helping students.

What are some cons of AIIMS Rishikesh as I have heard only positive reviews?

Aparna Das
Muskan Shafi

AIIMS Rishikesh is one of the renowned medical institutions located in Uttarakhand. Although, the facilities and faculty at AIIMS Rishikesh are excellent. It may have some cons as well.

Lack of Nightlife: Rishikesh is a small city in the northern state of Uttarakhand in India and is not a metropolitan city. The city is the yoga capital of India and the city sleeps early. Students might not have happening nightlife at AIIMS Rishikesh.

Exam Pattern: AlIMS Rishikesh is one of the institutions to follow a 100% MCQ exam pattern. Although, the exam pattern seems easy and aids students in preparing for their entrance exam. Students might not get a chance how to articulate answers, and presentations and structure the answers as they do in traditional exams. This might be disadvantageous for students wanting to pursue research in their higher education. With Practice and Consistency, students can overcome any difficulties.

The potential cons of AIIMS Rishikesh are based on individual preferences and choices. It is always better to know the pros and cons before choosing any institution. It is advised for students to consider their preferences before making any decision.

Will it be a right decision to leave AIIMS Patna for AIIMS Rishikesh or Raipur considering the current scenario?

Malabika SinhaMBBS from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Raipur

I am a student at AIIMS Raipur, so I will try sharing some advantages of joining my institution.

I wouldn’t recommend AIIMS Rishikesh over Patna or Raipur. The only favorable thing in regard to AIIMS Rishikesh is that it is located in the lap of nature. But over the years, its hype has somewhat died down partially because of constant issues with the administration. Also, the other AIIMS have seen an increase in their PG seats. AIIMS Patna and Raipur have excelled in other areas, and made up for their lack in terms of location.

The main hospital building of AIIMS Raipur was recently completed, and all the major departments have been shifted in the same. The faculty at AIIMS Raipur is as good as any other AIIMS, and academic excellence is given utmost priority. The attendance system is a bit strict, but it is totally up to the AIIMS standards.

The Trauma and Emergency is top notch at AIIMS Rishikesh, but that is of less importance for an MBBS student. The patient load has increased at AIIMS Raipur over the years. The students of AIIMS Raipur can join various cultural, literary and sports clubs. This helps in overall development and extracurricular achievement.

Thus, I would recommend AIIMS Raipur as a good institution for an MBBS, but even AIIMS Patna is a good choice.

Does AIIMS Rishikesh have a uniform for undergraduates?

Meghdeepa Mondal
Abhinav MishraMBBS from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Rishikesh (2021)

Everyone at AIIMS Rishikesh has to wear scrubs as their uniform.

When I was a student at AIIMS Rishikesh, this scrub system was not in place. But when I became an intern, scrub suits were introduced, and I had my own with my name on it.

The scrubs are color-coded according to one’s designation. Undergraduates wear gray scrubs, interns and JRs wear green scrubs, and faculty members wear pink scrubs. The Orderlies, support staff, nurses and doctors, all wear scrubs at AIIMS Rishikesh.

So the uniform for college hours is a gray scrub for MBBS students.

Should I upgrade to AIIMS Rishikesh in 2nd round after getting AIIMS Raipur in 1st?I will be appearing for USMLE so research is important but I really like Raipur especially because it's close to city

Atul Yadav
Sanjana KapoorLives in New Delhi

Both these AIIMS were established in 2012, both are centrally funded, and there are very minor differences between the two. Both AIIMS Rishikesh and AIIMS Raipur will offer good research facilities to you.

Location is another important factor. AIIMS Rishikesh offers a scenic landscape, while AIIMS Raipur offers a rich city life. AIIMS Rishikesh has theory exams, while AIIMS Raipur has MCQ based exams.

Hospital wise, AIIMS Rishikesh has a slight advantage, but academics and infrastructure wise, both are equally good.

Thus, you can opt for AIIMS Raipur without any hesitation.

Which is better, PGIMS Rohtak or AIIMS Rishikesh?

Tithi AggrawalLives in New Delhi

AIIMS Rishikesh is definitely better than PGIMS Rohtak. It's one of the fattest developing medical institutes and is reaching new heights every year. Every year, more PG seats are added, maximum in all peripheral AIIMS. With the appointment of the new director, many top-notch facilities have been added and the accommodations have been improved considerably.

AIIMS Rishikesh has one of the best blood banks in India and has some of the rarest machines in the country. Its Radiology department has an MRI of 3 Tesla and a CT scan of 256 slices which is only available in a few places in India.

The institute is funded by the Central Government and is located in Rishikesh, one of the most beautiful cities in India. It has some of the best faculties that focus a lot on MBBS students. The institute has several STS projects and intra-mural projects.

So, definitely choose AIIMS Rishikesh over PGIMS.

Is KGMU better or AIIMS Rishikesh?

Raktim Tarafdar
Sanjana KapoorLives in New Delhi

Being a central institute is not important, it's about the scope of learning offered at a medical school.

AIIMS Rishikesh is a central institute, so it has a better administration. However, KGMU offers much more practical knowledge to its students. MBBS is all about gaining practical knowledge. The number and types of patients received by KGMU is very high. As you enter your clinical years, you’ll realize the importance of these things.

AIIMS Faculties are better administered than state faculties. However, MBBS is about your own efforts and approach towards studies. Teachers can only guide you, the hard work is your job entirely. So faculties aren’t much of a concern. Moreover, KGMU also has highly qualified faculties.

I would say KGMU is better than all the other AIIMS, except AIIMS Delhi.

To become a Radiologist after completing a B.Sc in Radiology, you need to pursue a medical degree followed by specialization in radiology. A B.Sc in Radiology makes you a Radiologic Technologist, not a medical Radiologist. The step to become radiologists:

  • Complete MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery)
  • Postgraduate Specialization in Radiology
  • Register with the Medical Council of India (MCI)/NMC or the respective state medical council and practice.
