IIM Calcutta PhD FAQs
Ques. What is the Comprehensive Qualifying Exam and what happens if a scholar fails?
Ans. The CQE is a written examination conducted by each area group to assess whether a doctoral scholar has acquired the theoretical and methodological foundations needed for independent research. It is typically taken at the end of Year 1 or early Year 2. Scholars who clear it move to a higher monthly stipend of INR 45,000 and progress to thesis proposal development. Scholars who do not clear it may receive a second opportunity as determined by their area committee. Persistent failure may result in exit from the programme with a terminal Master’s award.
Ques. Can B.Tech graduates apply to the DPM without first completing a Master’s degree?
Ans. Yes. IIM Calcutta accepts B.Tech or 4-year degree holders directly into the DPM, provided they have a minimum CGPA of 6.5 on a 10-point scale. This allows engineering graduates to transition into management research without completing a master’s first. A valid CAT, GMAT, GRE, or GATE score is still mandatory. Their applications are assessed with the same rigour as candidates holding a master’s degree in management or related fields.
Ques. Can a scholar change research areas after being admitted?
Ans. Switching areas after joining the DPM is generally not possible. Coursework, the qualifying exam, and thesis supervision are all structured around the admitted area. Applicants can apply for up to 2 areas in one application and if shortlisted, are interviewed by committees of both areas independently. An offer is then made in one area. Candidates should therefore consider their area preference very carefully before submitting, rather than treating it as something adjustable after admission.
Ques. What research output is expected before a doctoral scholar can defend the thesis?
Ans. IIM Calcutta expects scholars to have meaningful research output before the defence, typically at least one paper in an advanced stage of publication. The exact standard varies by area, but most faculty supervisors expect one published or accepted paper and one or two working papers drawn from dissertation chapters. Conference presentations funded through student development grants are encouraged to gather feedback from the global research community before chapters are finalised.
Ques. What career outcomes can a doctoral scholar realistically expect after graduating?
Ans. Most IIM Calcutta DPM graduates enter academia at IITs, IIMs, IIFT, or international business schools, with starting salaries typically in the range of INR 18 to 20 LPA at Indian institutions. A smaller portion enter policy research bodies, central bank research divisions, or research-focused consulting roles. The IIM Calcutta brand opens strong access to faculty hiring panels, but the quality of published research and the thesis remain the primary determinants of placement outcomes.
