NUJS LLM FAQs
Ques. How is the LLM specialisation assigned at NUJS?
Ans. NUJS does not allow students to choose their specialisation at the time of CLAT PG application. Specialisation allocation happens after admission, based on your CLAT PG rank and your stated preference among the five streams: Corporate and Commercial Law, International and Comparative Law, Criminal and Security Law, Law and Technology, and Intellectual Property Law. Higher-ranked candidates get priority in their preferred specialisation. If two streams are equally competitive, the university may use a further internal process to resolve ties. It is advisable to rank all five streams in a thoughtful order when asked to submit preferences.
Ques. Does the NUJS LLM have a research thesis component or is it entirely coursework-based?
Ans. The NUJS 1-year LLM includes both coursework and a dissertation component. Students attend taught courses across two semesters while also working on a research dissertation in their specialisation area. The dissertation is supervised by a faculty member and is a significant part of the overall assessment. Students interested in publishing their work in law reviews or using the LLM as a stepping stone to a PhD should use the dissertation seriously, as it can serve as the foundation for future research proposals at doctoral programmes in India or abroad.
Ques. What is the realistic chance of placement in a Tier-1 firm after the NUJS LLM?
Ans. NUJS is one of the top-5 NLUs and carries strong brand recognition with Tier-1 law firms. In 2024, around 60% of LLM students placed through campus recruitment secured roles at Tier-1 firms at packages of INR 15 LPA and above. However, competition is high and firms also recruit from multiple top NLUs simultaneously. Your academic performance at NUJS, moot court record, internship background before the LLM, and quality of your dissertation all factor into your placement outcome. Students from the Corporate and Commercial Law specialisation tend to attract the most firm interest.
Ques. Can NUJS LLM graduates directly enrol in a PhD programme in India or abroad?
Ans. Yes. A 1-year LLM from a recognised NLU like NUJS satisfies the postgraduate requirement for PhD admission at most Indian universities, including other NLUs. For PhD programmes abroad, eligibility varies by institution. Some US law schools treat an Indian LLM as equivalent to a JD for PhD purposes while others may require a second LLM. Check individual institution requirements and aim for a strong academic record and high-quality dissertation at NUJS to strengthen your application.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for NUJS LLM students?
Ans. Hostel accommodation at NUJS for LLM students is allotted subject to availability and is not guaranteed. Preference is typically given to students who have relocated from other states and who applied early. If hostel is unavailable, you will need to arrange private housing near the university. The Salt Lake campus area has reasonable private accommodation options. Contact the NUJS hostel office after receiving your admission letter to check availability for your batch.
