Vel Tech Ph.D. FAQs
Ques. Is the Ph.D. (Science) at Vel Tech a full-time residential programme, and is attendance mandatory?
Ans. Yes, the Ph.D. (Science) at Vel Tech is a full-time on-campus programme. Scholars are required to be present at the university campus throughout the duration of their research. Regular attendance at department seminars, supervisor meetings, and coursework classes is mandatory. The university follows a structured schedule for research progress reviews, and scholars must submit periodic progress reports to the Office of Research Studies. Part-time scholars, however, are permitted to work elsewhere but must submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer.
Ques. What is the stipend amount for Ph.D. scholars in Science, and when does it start?
Ans. Full-time Ph.D. scholars in Science receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 20,000 without any qualifying exam, and Rs. 25,000 per month if they hold a valid UGC/CSIR NET qualification. The stipend typically begins after the completion of the admission process and registration formalities. In addition to the stipend, scholars also receive free shared hostel accommodation and a contingency grant of Rs. 25,000 per annum for research-related expenses. GATE-qualified scholars are eligible for the Chancellor Special Fellowship, which offers Rs. 37,000/month in the first two years and Rs. 42,000/month in the third year.
Ques. What research areas are available under Ph.D. (Science) at Vel Tech, and how do I choose a supervisor?
Ans. The Ph.D. (Science) programme at Vel Tech covers research in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and related interdisciplinary areas. In Physics alone, active research areas include nanomaterials, photocatalysis, radiation dosimetry, spectroscopy, thin films, supercapacitors, plasma physics, atmospheric sciences, and nonlinear optics. After clearing the entrance exam and interview, candidates are allotted a research supervisor based on their area of interest and the availability of supervisors. The department has 23 recognized research supervisors in Physics, and candidates are encouraged to review faculty profiles on the department website before applying.
Ques. Is UGC NET or GATE mandatory to apply for Ph.D. (Science) at Vel Tech?
Ans. No, UGC NET or GATE is not mandatory to apply. Vel Tech conducts its own PhD Entrance Examination for candidates who do not hold a qualifying national-level test score. However, candidates with valid UGC/CSIR JRF/NET, GATE, SLET, Teacher Fellowships, or M.Phil. are exempted from the entrance examination and are directly called for a personal interview. Holding a NET or GATE score also makes candidates eligible for higher stipends and special fellowships, so it is strongly recommended.
Ques. What is the minimum duration of the Ph.D. (Science) programme at Vel Tech, and can it be extended?
Ans. The minimum duration for the Regular Ph.D. (Full Time) programme at Vel Tech is 3 years. There is no fixed maximum duration, but scholars are expected to complete their research within a reasonable timeframe as per the university's Ph.D. regulations (VTR DR 2025). Extensions are permitted subject to satisfactory progress reports and approval by the Research Advisory Committee. If the programme extends beyond 3 years, tuition fees continue to be charged on a semester-wise basis at Rs. 18,000 per semester.
Ques. Does Vel Tech provide hostel accommodation for Ph.D. scholars in Science, and is it free?
Ans. Full-time Ph.D. scholars who receive the institutional stipend (NET-qualified) are provided free shared hostel accommodation as part of the fellowship package. For scholars without NET qualification, hostel accommodation is available on campus at a cost ranging from Rs. 1,05,000 to Rs. 1,65,000 per year depending on the room type (standard/shared to single A/C room). Hostel allotment is on a first-come, first-served basis. A refundable caution deposit of Rs. 5,000 and a one-time hostel admission fee of Rs. 5,000 are applicable for paid hostel accommodation.
