Ques. What is the eligibility for Ph.D. in Design at KK Modi University?
Ans. Candidates must hold a Master’s degree in Design, Fine Arts, Architecture, Visual Arts, or a closely related creative discipline with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks from a recognised university. SC/ST/OBC/EWS candidates require 50%. A valid UGC-NET or JRF score is the primary qualifying credential, though KKMU also accepts candidates who qualify in its own PhD Entrance Test, followed by a Research Aptitude Test or faculty interview on campus.
Ques. What are the research areas available under Ph.D. Design at KKMU?
Ans. The KKMU School of Design supports doctoral research across creative practice areas including visual communication, user experience design, fashion design, interior design, product design, and strategic design management. The programme is structured as a Practice-Led PhD, meaning candidates can pursue research through creative and design-based inquiry in addition to traditional theoretical frameworks. The specific research area is determined in consultation with the assigned faculty supervisor at the time of enrolment.
Ques. Can Ph.D. Design candidates at KKMU get the UGC-JRF fellowship?
Ans. Yes. UGC-NET qualified candidates who hold a Junior Research Fellowship award are eligible for the UGC-JRF monthly stipend of INR 37,000 per month plus House Rent Allowance during the tenure of the fellowship. The JRF is applicable for the first two years of the PhD programme and may be upgraded to the Senior Research Fellowship in subsequent years subject to UGC norms. Candidates should apply for the JRF directly through UGC after receiving the KKMU admission letter.
Ques. What is the duration of Ph.D. Design at KKMU?
Ans. The programme runs for a minimum of 3 years and a maximum of 5 years as stipulated by the UGC PhD Regulations 2022. The first year includes mandatory course-work as prescribed by the university. Fees are billed over a 4-year cycle at INR 1,15,163 per year. Candidates who complete the dissertation and viva voce examination within 3 years may graduate early subject to the university’s academic calendar and examination schedule.
Ques. What career paths open up after completing Ph.D. Design from KKMU?
Ans. Ph.D. Design graduates can pursue academic careers as Assistant Professors in design and fine arts departments of universities and colleges across India. Research positions at design councils, cultural institutions, and corporate R&D labs are also available. Design consultancy, design strategy leadership, and UGC-funded research project roles are additional pathways. The credential also qualifies candidates for postdoctoral research fellowships offered by DST, DBT, and other national science and arts funding bodies.
Ques. Does KKMU provide hostel accommodation for PhD Design students?
Ans. KKMU has hostel facilities at its Bhilai campus and PhD students are eligible to apply for on-campus accommodation subject to availability. Hostel charges are separate from the programme fee of INR 4,60,652 and must be arranged directly with the university’s hostel administration. Students who qualify for the UGC-JRF fellowship may use the HRA component of the stipend to meet off-campus accommodation costs.
