University of Michigan-Dearborn Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

UM-Dearborn admission requirements for Indian students centre on a WES-verified bachelor degree and a proven English proficiency score.

PG Admission Requirements at University of Michigan-Dearborn

  • Academic: Four-year bachelor degree with minimum 65% or CGPA 6.5/10, mapped to the university minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0. Three-year Indian bachelor degrees are reviewed case by case; a masters degree strengthens the file.
  • English test: TOEFL iBT 79 (0-120 legacy scale) for most programs; TOEFL iBT 84 for doctoral. IELTS overall 6.5. Duolingo 105. Michigan English Test (MET) 57.
  • Credential evaluation: WES course-by-course evaluation is mandatory for all Indian transcripts before final admission.
  • Test waivers: GRE and GMAT are not required for any graduate program at UM-Dearborn and are considered only as optional supporting material.

UG Admission Requirements at University of Michigan-Dearborn

  • Academic: Class 12 completion with a strong academic record, typically 70% to 85% (recommended), from CBSE, ICSE or state boards.
  • English test: TOEFL iBT 79, IELTS 6.5 or Duolingo 105, matching the graduate minimums.

Key insight: UM-Dearborn accepts the Michigan English Test (MET) at score 57 as an accepted English proficiency test, which is a lower-cost, in-house alternative for Indian applicants who struggle with TOEFL iBT registration slots.

University of Michigan-Dearborn Acceptance Rate 2027

University of Michigan-Dearborn acceptance rate for undergraduate international applicants is 58.6% (estimated), based on third-party admissions data. UM-Dearborn does not publish a single official acceptance rate; graduate program selectivity varies by department, with engineering and data science running tighter admits than business and social sciences.

The estimated rate places UM-Dearborn in the moderately selective band for Indian applicants, meaning a candidate meeting the 65% bachelor threshold and the TOEFL 79 minimum has a realistic chance of admission with a clean file. Rolling review means the strongest files submitted early face less competition for scholarships and Fall assistantships.

Reality check: The 58.6% figure is a headline undergraduate estimate. Indian applicants targeting MSE Automotive Systems Engineering or MS Data Science should expect stronger selectivity within these popular STEM tracks, so a bachelor CGPA above 7.0/10 with strong quantitative coursework materially improves the outcome.

University of Michigan-Dearborn vs Peer Universities

The peer set below covers Michigan-based regional public universities that Indian applicants shortlist against UM-Dearborn on cost and STEM strength.

Michigan Technological UniversityNA$54,000 (estimated)47.0 lakh (estimated)Northern Michigan STEM specialist

UM-Dearborn stands out on two counts: automatic Dearborn Graduate Scholarship funding at admission, and direct on-campus recruiting from Ford, Stellantis and General Motors, which peer regional universities in the state do not match at the same scale.

University of Michigan-Dearborn is the right fit for an Indian STEM applicant with a bachelor CGPA above 6.5/10, TOEFL 79 or IELTS 6.5, and a target to work in the US automotive or data sector after graduation. Total investment across two years lands at roughly ₹80 lakh with the Dearborn Graduate Scholarship applied, against a median post-graduation salary of ₹43.8 lakh a year, giving a manageable payback horizon under the study in USA pathway.

It is not the right fit for candidates prioritising a top-100 QS world rank or a fully-funded PhD assistantship. Applicants with those goals should look at Michigan State University or Purdue University as realistic named alternatives with stronger global research ranks and larger assistantship pools.

Fees

  • As an International Student, I pay 31000$ per academic year. This can vary due to the course we take, and there is a standard university fee of 400$, and considering all these and the living expenses like transportation and rent, it comes around 48000$ roughly per year
  • My course MS in Artificial Intelligence requires 30 credit hours in total
  • My university fees are charged semester-wise based on the number of credits taken. As an international student, I am required to take 9 credits to maintain full-time status
  • There was a 60$ application fee, which is claimable during the first semester, and a non-refundable 250$ application fee for the dorm
  • Moving on to the living expense per month, I live in the union, which is the on-campus housing/dorm. The rent here for it is 840$, which includes WIFI, electricity, and other utilities
  • However, my overall monthly expense can come around 1300$to 1500$ because of transportation, groceries, food, and other expenses

  • There are always some or other events happening on the campus by one or the other club, and I would say if you attend all of them, then you should forget about your studies.
  • They celebrate every major festival on campus from different countries and cultures. The library is amazing, and I used to study a lot over there. You have a gym, pickleball, ice skating ring, soccer, and football field if you are interested. You can go on hikes as well, which are very beautiful.

Overview

The US has been a lifelong dream for my father. He wanted to study in the US but could not because of financial restrictions. I made his dream come true. I'm a person who's very much into research and this is the country that tops in this aspect. My university is known to be one of the top institutions in the United States and the program I'll be studying in (AI) is basically the one that has a huge impact on everyone's life in the future. I wanted to be a part of the esteemed university given its rich background which would allow me to live in safe hands.

There are over 150 registered student clubs in the campus and all of these clubs are extremely active. Hence, we get to have activities almost every single day. They are engaging and I'm loving my time here as these activities are more stress-busters and relieve us from the academic pressure. My college has 3 campuses, Ann Arbor, Flint and Dearborn. In my campus, there is a 4-floor library which doesn't look like it opened in 1955. It's totally up-to-date. We have a Henry Ford hospital right next to the campus and as the entire country might know, this college is extremely famous for the sports teams it has for basketball, rugby, soccer and baseball. I'm sorry but I do not think I can list all 150+ clubs of my campus. There are engaging extracurricular activities like game and karaoke events, dance nights, etc. The Student Activities Board is an active club that I'm planning to be a part of. They are also taking us to Cedar Point in Ohio as a one-day amusement park trip :)

Overview

I have a UG background in Mech Engg. and I chose to go ahead with a Masters in Engineering Management course since I did not want to get into a very technical field hence I chose the University of Michigan since it has a good blend of mechanical and business courses without a very technical or Computer science courses. The fees is affordable and they also give a scholarship. The housing and accommodations are also affordable compared to other cities in the US. Texas also is a good option but the summer gets really bad there. University of Michigan Dearborn is a sub-university to the main campus in Ann Arbor which is a highly reputed and expensive university but Dearborn is also a good one in terms of education. There might not be a lot to do outside of academic terms but it's a good place to be. Career-wise - the students have to build their skills and apply for jobs on their own.

There are several activities and sports offered when the weather is favourable. The library is open till 10 pm. There are Fall and winter fests, and technical academic clubs to join. Medical is a little difficult in the US as appointments are given for weeks later and the cost is too much.

Campus life is not so great. There are a lot of clubs and events going on though, but not a lot of people participate. It is a satellite campus, very small and does not so many facilities. It has a good library and a good gym, nothing fancy.

I want to apply for the engineering management course at the University of Michigan Dearborn. Please share the fee structure and application deadline. I have booked TOEFL. Can I use it without TOEFL? Can I submit my score later?

The tuition varies based on your residency status (in-state or out-of-state) and whether you're attending full-time or part-time. However, you can explore the University of Michigan Dearborn courses to learn more about the curriculum, fees, and other details.
