The following bullets outline the core graduate admission requirements applicable to Indian candidates across master’s and doctoral programs.

  • Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree with a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (approximately 65% Indian equivalent) in a relevant field
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 79 (0-120 legacy scale) for most programs, TOEFL iBT 84 (0-120 legacy scale) for doctoral programs; IELTS 6.5; Duolingo 105; MET 57

Undergraduate Requirements at University of Michigan, Dearborn

The bullets below summarise the freshman entry threshold for Indian applicants entering directly from Class 12.

  • Academic: Class 12 completion with grades equivalent to 3.0 on a 4.0 US scale (approximately 65%) for strong candidacy
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 79 (0-120 legacy scale); IELTS 6.5; Duolingo 105; MET 57. Waiver available with two full years of general-track English in a US high school or acceptable SAT / ACT verbal scores

Key insight: The GRE-optional policy across every graduate program is a real cost saving for Indian applicants, but automotive and computer science departments still weigh strong quantitative scores favourably when balancing borderline files.

University of Michigan, Dearborn Acceptance Rate 2027

The University of Michigan, Dearborn reports an acceptance rate of around 58.6% (estimated figure), placing it in the moderately selective category among US regional public universities. Program-level admit rates differ, with the College of Engineering and Computer Science running tighter than campus-wide averages.

For Indian applicants meeting the 3.0 GPA and English proficiency thresholds, admit probability is materially higher than the aggregate figure suggests. Applications submitted with complete WES evaluations and a clear statement of purpose are prioritised by admissions committees.

Reality check: The 58.6% headline overstates real difficulty for Indian STEM applicants at the master’s level, where prepared candidates with strong GPAs and matching bachelor’s fields see much higher outcomes than the campus average implies.

The university stands out among Michigan regional publics for its exclusive automotive engineering programs and direct employer pipelines. Its 88.8% MBA placement rate and USD 50,389 median mid-career salary place it above most peers in the comparison set. Indian applicants weighing the flagship option can review the Ann Arbor comparison for cost and outcome context.

Planning note: Indian applicants shortlisting Michigan-based options should weigh Dearborn against Wayne State on cost and against Michigan Tech on research intensity, not against Ann Arbor on brand equity, since the two serve materially different applicant profiles.

For Indian students who match the profile, the University of Michigan, Dearborn offers a defensible ROI. The estimated total investment of ₹ 90 to 100 Lakh sits against a median mid-career salary near ₹ 48 Lakh reported by graduates. It suits applicants who want US-based automotive or engineering careers without the cost or admissions difficulty of the Ann Arbor flagship and value proximity to Detroit-area employers over global rankings prestige.

Indian nationals also gain access to the full STEM OPT extension across every engineering and data science master’s program. Enrolled candidates join an alumni network embedded across Detroit’s automotive corridor and one of the larger Indian student communities among Michigan regional publics. Applicants can compare paths through the USA MS pathway to weigh alternatives against national research universities and lower-cost regional options.

The university is not the right fit for applicants seeking Ivy-tier brand recognition, non-engineering research at global scale or a fully residential undergraduate experience. Candidates prioritising these dimensions should consider Michigan State University or the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor as realistic alternatives with materially different cost, admissions and outcome profiles.

University of Michigan, Dearborn FAQs

Ques. Does the University of Michigan, Dearborn offer STEM-designated degrees for OPT?

Ans. Yes, all MSE engineering, MS Data Science, MS Computer and Information Science and MS Engineering Management programs are STEM-designated. Graduates qualify for the standard 12-month Optional Practical Training period plus a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving Indian students up to 36 months of post-completion US work authorisation before requiring an H-1B sponsorship transition.

Ques. Can international students work part-time at UM-Dearborn during studies?

Ans. F-1 visa holders can work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during fall and winter semesters plus full-time during official university breaks. Off-campus employment is not permitted in the first academic year. From year two, Curricular Practical Training authorisation may be granted for internships tied directly to the degree program with faculty and international office approval.

Ques. What is the GRE or GMAT waiver policy at University of Michigan, Dearborn?

Ans. No graduate program requires the GRE or GMAT. Submission is fully optional and considered at the committee’s discretion when included. Applicants strengthen borderline files by submitting a strong quantitative score, but a competitive GPA of 3.3 or higher and a clear statement of purpose can secure admission without any standardised test scores.

Ques. Is document apostille or attestation required for Indian transcripts?

Ans. The university requires a course-by-course credential evaluation from WES, submitted directly by WES to the university. Original transcripts must be sent by the Indian institution in sealed envelopes. Apostille is not universally required, but the WES evaluation must be complete before final admission decisions are issued. Budget six to eight weeks for WES turnaround plus institutional dispatch time.

Ques. What financial documents does UM-Dearborn need for the I-20?

Ans. Applicants must submit a Confidential Financial Statement showing liquid funds covering one year of tuition and living costs, roughly USD 47,000 to 48,000. Accepted proofs include bank statements dated within six months, education loan sanction letters from Indian banks or NBFCs and sponsor affidavits with matching bank proof. The I-20 is issued only after financial verification clears.

Ques. Are Indian education loans accepted for UM-Dearborn admissions?

Ans. Yes, Indian applicants routinely fund enrollment through education loans from HDFC Credila, SBI, Bank of Baroda, Axis Bank, Prodigy Finance and MPOWER Financing. Loan sanction letters count as valid proof of funds for I-20 issuance. Prodigy Finance and MPOWER offer no-cosigner loans specifically for master’s applicants at recognised US universities, including UM-Dearborn engineering programs.

Ques. Can Indian students bring dependents on an F-2 visa to Dearborn?

Ans. Yes, F-1 students can sponsor a spouse and unmarried children under 21 on the F-2 visa. Additional financial proof of USD 6,000 to 8,000 per dependent per year is required for the I-20 amendment. F-2 spouses cannot work or study full-time in the US. F-2 children may enroll in K-12 schools. Health insurance coverage for dependents is mandatory.

Ques. How does the University of Michigan, Dearborn differ from UM Ann Arbor?

Ans. The Dearborn campus is a separate institution with distinct admission, tuition and degrees, though it shares the University of Michigan seal on diplomas. Ann Arbor is the R1 flagship with global rankings and higher selectivity, while Dearborn is a regional R2 focused on undergraduate teaching and engineering. Tuition at Dearborn runs roughly 30 to 40% lower than Ann Arbor for comparable master’s programs.

Campus Life

  • There are two campuses in my university, one is Fairlane Campus, which is near Henry Ford College, north side of the main campus, and the other is the Main Campus, which is the central campus
  • There are decent amount of facilities available on my campus which is a really good Library and huge wellness center which has a ice ring huge basket ball court and a gym ?major campus festival includes wolverines day, friendsgiving etc and personally i know few clubs but there are tons of clubs especially for indians and international students some examples are IGSA indian graduate student association SAB students activities board and AIC artificial intelligence clubs like this there are tons of clubs.
  • There are tons of cultural events happening on the campus, from Ethnicity Day to Diwali, Pongal, and Holi, etc IGSA takes care of all indian festivals celebrated on campus.

Fees

  • As an International Student, I pay 31000$ per academic year. This can vary due to the course we take, and there is a standard university fee of 400$, and considering all these and the living expenses like transportation and rent, it comes around 48000$ roughly per year
  • My course MS in Artificial Intelligence requires 30 credit hours in total
  • My university fees are charged semester-wise based on the number of credits taken. As an international student, I am required to take 9 credits to maintain full-time status
  • There was a 60$ application fee, which is claimable during the first semester, and a non-refundable 250$ application fee for the dorm
  • Moving on to the living expense per month, I live in the union, which is the on-campus housing/dorm. The rent here for it is 840$, which includes WIFI, electricity, and other utilities
  • However, my overall monthly expense can come around 1300$to 1500$ because of transportation, groceries, food, and other expenses

  • University of Michigan Dearborn is a standalone University and has just one campus.
  • The University hosts a full size basketball ground ice skating rink engineering lab buildings with robotics chemical engineering automotive lab powertrain lab and a lot more. University has its own library it has medical services too.
  • University host of plethora of events from Indian events like Diwali Holi to American events like Thanksgiving Halloween party and overall the cultural of the university is very lively and welcoming.
  • University does have some application with the Ann arbor campus where they have teams off ice hockey basketball and soccer however they are not very well known to my knowledge.

Fees

  • College Tuition Fees
    • I am enrolled in a computer science and engineering degree program. Every semester you have to enroll for at least three courses as an international student each course carry 3 credits. Tuition fees are due every semester. It's roughly comes to about $12,000 per semester which includes three courses. This fee includes $5,500 scholarship which is awarded to most of the international students.
  • Accomodation
    • Based on preferences accommodation is available in shared space and as a personal unit. University itself doesn't have any accommodation or an hostel if it's own but it does recommend a few housing communities.
    • Private housing one person per bedroom may range from $800 to $1,100.
    • Shared housing in a 2B2B to be apartment for 4 people is around $400 and for 5 people is around $450.
    • University community Indian graduate student association (IGSA) helps students with accommodation, one can reach out to them at umdigsa@gmail.com.
  • Cost of Living
    • I currently stay in a shared space. 2B2B apartment with a total rent of $1930 shared among 5 students in total.
    • Food expenses falls around $80 per month in my scenario.
    • Electricity gas and Wi-Fi comes up to $40 to $50 per month on an individual.
    • University shuttle takes care of weekly shopping and commutes to university daily.
    • Fuel costs around $3 per gallon.

  • There are always some or other events happening on the campus by one or the other club, and I would say if you attend all of them, then you should forget about your studies.
  • They celebrate every major festival on campus from different countries and cultures. The library is amazing, and I used to study a lot over there. You have a gym, pickleball, ice skating ring, soccer, and football field if you are interested. You can go on hikes as well, which are very beautiful.

Overview

The US has been a lifelong dream for my father. He wanted to study in the US but could not because of financial restrictions. I made his dream come true. I'm a person who's very much into research and this is the country that tops in this aspect. My university is known to be one of the top institutions in the United States and the program I'll be studying in (AI) is basically the one that has a huge impact on everyone's life in the future. I wanted to be a part of the esteemed university given its rich background which would allow me to live in safe hands.

There are over 150 registered student clubs in the campus and all of these clubs are extremely active. Hence, we get to have activities almost every single day. They are engaging and I'm loving my time here as these activities are more stress-busters and relieve us from the academic pressure. My college has 3 campuses, Ann Arbor, Flint and Dearborn. In my campus, there is a 4-floor library which doesn't look like it opened in 1955. It's totally up-to-date. We have a Henry Ford hospital right next to the campus and as the entire country might know, this college is extremely famous for the sports teams it has for basketball, rugby, soccer and baseball. I'm sorry but I do not think I can list all 150+ clubs of my campus. There are engaging extracurricular activities like game and karaoke events, dance nights, etc. The Student Activities Board is an active club that I'm planning to be a part of. They are also taking us to Cedar Point in Ohio as a one-day amusement park trip :)

Overview

I have a UG background in Mech Engg. and I chose to go ahead with a Masters in Engineering Management course since I did not want to get into a very technical field hence I chose the University of Michigan since it has a good blend of mechanical and business courses without a very technical or Computer science courses. The fees is affordable and they also give a scholarship. The housing and accommodations are also affordable compared to other cities in the US. Texas also is a good option but the summer gets really bad there. University of Michigan Dearborn is a sub-university to the main campus in Ann Arbor which is a highly reputed and expensive university but Dearborn is also a good one in terms of education. There might not be a lot to do outside of academic terms but it's a good place to be. Career-wise - the students have to build their skills and apply for jobs on their own.

There are several activities and sports offered when the weather is favourable. The library is open till 10 pm. There are Fall and winter fests, and technical academic clubs to join. Medical is a little difficult in the US as appointments are given for weeks later and the cost is too much.

Campus life is not so great. There are a lot of clubs and events going on though, but not a lot of people participate. It is a satellite campus, very small and does not so many facilities. It has a good library and a good gym, nothing fancy.

I want to apply for the engineering management course at the University of Michigan Dearborn. Please share the fee structure and application deadline. I have booked TOEFL. Can I use it without TOEFL? Can I submit my score later?

The tuition varies based on your residency status (in-state or out-of-state) and whether you're attending full-time or part-time. However, you can explore the University of Michigan Dearborn courses to learn more about the curriculum, fees, and other details.
