University of Michigan-Ann Arbor Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Indian graduate applicants must show a strong academic record, an English proficiency score, and evaluated transcripts. Ross MBA and MS in Engineering carry the tightest bars.

Postgraduate Requirements

  • Academic: Bachelor’s degree with 60% to 70% or CGPA 6.5 to 7.5/10 depending on programme (recommended); four-year Indian degrees preferred, though three-year degrees are accepted by Rackham on case review
  • English test: TOEFL iBT 84 minimum (Masters), 94 minimum (PhD); IELTS 6.5 minimum with each band 6.0+; PTE and MELAB accepted at some departments
  • Credential verification: WES course-by-course evaluation required for most departments; some accept university-issued transcripts
  • Standardised tests: GMAT or GRE for Ross MBA and some engineering programmes; increasingly waived for MS candidates with strong academics

  • English test: TOEFL iBT 100 or IELTS 7.0 for undergraduate admission; SAT or ACT recommended but not required through 2027

Note: Applicants with medium-of-instruction letters in English can request an English test waiver from Rackham, but Ross and Engineering rarely grant it, so plan on TOEFL or IELTS regardless.

University of Michigan-Ann Arbor vs Peer Universities

Peer set covers three US public research universities plus one cross-country reference. Comparison is on QS rank, Collegedunia Study Abroad rank, average PG fee, and differentiator.

UniversityQS Rank 2027Collegedunia Study AbroadAvg PG Fee (USD / INR lakh)Differentiator
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor#51#20 of 824USD 57,776 / 55.3 lakhBroadest top-20 subject spread, Ross MBA prestige

Ohio State University#152NAUSD 40,000 / 38.3 lakh (estimated)Larger campus, cheaper Midwest COL

UMich stands out for its combined strength across engineering, business, and health sciences, backed by the largest research budget in the peer set. Indian graduates report the strongest employer recognition among the four for consulting and healthcare pathways.

University of Michigan-Ann Arbor fits Indian applicants who want a top-25 US research university with strong Ross MBA, engineering, and public health outcomes, and can plan around a full-cost of USD 78,000 to USD 105,000 per year against a median PG salary near USD 95,000. The MBA universities in USA route and STEM OPT eligibility strengthen the visa-to-work pathway for Indian graduates targeting long US careers.

UMich is less suitable for Indian applicants who need heavy institutional funding for a master’s degree or want a lower-cost STEM route, since assistantships concentrate at the PhD level and cash aid is thin at the master’s level. Purdue-West Lafayette is a realistic lower-cost alternative for engineering-focused applicants without funding.

University of Michigan-Ann Arbor FAQs

Ques. Does UMich accept three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees?

Ans. Rackham Graduate School reviews three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees on a case-by-case basis, and several departments in humanities and social sciences accept them with strong academics. Engineering, business, and applied science programmes usually require a four-year degree or a completed one-year postgraduate diploma. Indian applicants with three-year degrees should contact the target department before applying to confirm eligibility.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time on campus at UMich?

Ans. F-1 international students at UMich can work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the academic term and full-time during official breaks. Popular roles include research assistantships, teaching assistantships, library jobs, dining services, and IT desk positions. Off-campus work requires Curricular Practical Training or Optional Practical Training authorization from the international student office.

Ques. Is the GRE waived for UMich master’s programmes?

Ans. Several Rackham master’s programmes have made GRE optional or waived through 2027, including many in the College of Engineering and School of Information. Some departments still require GRE for scholarship consideration or research-track applications. Verify at each department’s admission page, since waiver rules vary across programmes and change between admission cycles.

Ques. What is the application fee for UMich graduate programmes?

Ans. The Rackham Graduate School application fee is USD 90 for international students, roughly INR 8,600. Ross MBA charges USD 200 for its full-time programme. Fee waivers are available for applicants from Rackham-recognized programmes like McNair Scholars and select US-based diversity fellowships, but Indian applicants applying from India generally pay the full fee.

Ques. How long does OPT last for UMich master’s graduates?

Ans. UMich master’s graduates receive 12 months of standard Optional Practical Training after degree completion. Graduates from STEM-designated master’s programmes, including MS CSE, MS Data Science, and MS Engineering fields, qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. This gives Indian STEM graduates a total 36-month US work window before requiring H-1B sponsorship.

Ques. Do Indian education loan providers recognize UMich?

Ans. All major Indian education loan providers, including HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, Avanse, and Auxilo, recognize UMich as a Tier-1 US university. Loan sanctions of INR 60 lakh to INR 1 crore are common for MS and MBA at UMich. Prodigy Finance and MPOWER Financing offer no-cosigner loans for admitted Indian students.

Ques. What financial documents are required for the UMich I-20?

Ans. UMich requires proof of funds equal to one full year of tuition plus living costs, currently near USD 80,000, before issuing the I-20 form. Acceptable documents include bank statements, loan sanction letters, sponsor affidavits, and scholarship award letters. Indian applicants using education loans should submit the loan sanction letter on the bank’s letterhead with the loan amount clearly stated.

Ques. Which Indian boards does UMich accept for undergraduate admission?

Ans. UMich accepts Class 12 results from CBSE, CISCE, and all recognized Indian state boards for undergraduate admission. Predicted scores from CBSE and IB are accepted for early application review, with final marksheets required after admission. UMich also accepts the Indian School Certificate and Higher Secondary Certificate as equivalent to a US high school diploma for admission purposes.

  • Umich has the central campus and the northern campus. First or second week of the fall semester is Festifall; hundreds of organizations set up on the Diag and talk to people who might want to join. That's the best way to find something besides searching Maize Pages.
  • If you have an interest, there is almost definitely an org around it. Search maize pages and send an email to them in the fall.

Fees

  • My fees are as follows:
  • Tuition: $58870
  • Living expenses: $23310
  • Book and insurance: $3777
  • Total: $85957
  • This is an average for 1 year (Likely goes up). This was obviously for the 2023-24 year but the credit-wise fees change every year. And also the fee structure depends upon your degree and the school or college within the university. Your best bet is getting Graduate Student Instructor or Research Assistant Roles.

  • It’s essentially divided into 3 sides. North campus, central campus, and south campus. However, these are just in Ann Arbour. There is U of M Dearborn and Flint as well.
  • All kinds of facilities are available and mostly free to access for students. You could book yourself a ride to home late in the night as well and it’s free of charge.
  • For all Indian festivals, ISA (Indian Student Association) organises an event where students gather to celebrate. There are independent private parties or celebrations as well where smaller pockets of student gather
  • Recreational centres are the primary sports centres and have all the sports you could imagine. There’s heated Olympic-size pools as well.

Fees

  • Sem1 was 27000 USD
  • Sem 2 was 29000 USD (The tuition went up by around 10%)
  • Sem 3 was 10000 USD
  • A total of 30 credits
  • Sem 1 and 2 I had taken 12 credits each ( 4 subjects and 3 per subject) Sem 3 was just 1 subject, I.e 3 credits and the last 3 credits were fulfilled by internship
  • The fee is charged per semester; above 9 credits per semester are charged the same, so 9, 12, 15, etc. credits will be the same full semester fees of ~30000 USD. Anything less than 9 credits will be charged per credit, 3300 per credit at the time of my graduation
  • Total monthly expenses could round up to 1000 USD easily, depending on if you choose to eat out a lot; that could be a lot higher

  • 3 campuses , North - Mostly has Engineering Department , Central: Hospital ,Law , Human Genetics(My Department ) , it is near Downtown , much of a happening area of of Ann Arbor , South Campus has Management and Football Stadium (one of the largest Football stadium in the US ) .
  • Additionally it has many libraries , and food spots , one is called Dudhastate , it has its library open 24 X 7 .
  • One of the Library in my department is Tauberman Health Sciences library, it has MPRINT option for all students to free printing upto $24

Fees

  • $27,360/semester, the payment needs to be done through FLYWIRE, as UM prefers only Flywire way of Payment for Education Loans especially, it is charged in 2 installments per semester , but students also have the option of paying in 5 EMI installments of tuition fees per semester as well.
  • Additionally my monthly expenses comes upto $1000 , as my accommodation rent is around $600, UM health insurance charges monthly $250, and an extra $100 for grocery and other miscellaneous expenses.

  • Three, Ann Arbor is the main campus and there is also Dearborn and Flint.
  • A number of libraries (a little too many, you can study at a new library every month for two years literally), sports facilities (two recreational facilities on campus and a number of other paid options), and medical services (there is a big Michigan Medicine hospital) are available.
  • Football is major here, the Michigan stadium is the biggest one in the US, so it gets super crazy during football season. You can participate in a snow fight at the Diag, go tailgating, get a lot of free food, attend opera shows, do a zipline all for free on the campus.

Fees

  • It was 26,000 USD per semester (also paid semester-wise), based on the number of credits you take. So in the last semester, if you don't take a full-credit course load, then you have to pay less fess. Minimum of 9 credits and a maximum of 18 were required in one semester.
  • Total required credits for the whole course were 48 to graduate. So you can take extra credits and have lesser credits in the last semester and pay less tuition, or else graduate in 3 semesters (advised if you have a job offer).

  • Our university has 2 campuses—North and Central. All facilities are available on campus. Our campus has several events but Festifall is a huge event that introduces freshmen to various clubs and groups.
  • There are clubs and bodies that host extracurricular things like painting, study teams, ice skating, outings, sports, and fitness activities to keep interesting things happening throughout.

Fees

  • My semester fee is around thirty thousand dollars. My monthly expenditures are not a lot since everything is mostly provided by the university. I only have to pay rent and utilities and personal expenses such as clothing, groceries sometimes, and restaurants.
  • The university is really good at hosting events, which gives us enough opportunities to get free food and other things. The transportation is also free for campus students.

Overview

Academics and locations. It was definitely a work hard play hard experience. I also wanted a school with school spirit and a good sports program that was not too far from home.

The reason I chose to go to the USA was the economic stability and a very systematic education system. It's much easier to stay here than in other countries according to me. The University of Michigan was ranked no. 4 in USA for civil engineering when I joined. However, the major factors were the course structure, flexibility in taking courses outside of the department, and research opportunities and funds. U of M being an R1 University is one of the highest funded Universities in the USA. As for the flexibility in coursework, I took half of the credits for my degree from outside of the department which gave me knowledge and insights of various other disciplines. All sorts of career opportunities can be achieved here. There are various career fairs and workshops to help students improve their resumes, network with potential employers and get well-earning jobs. The name of the University itself weighs a lot and it's not very difficult to get a job even during the recession. My overall experience in the past 2 years has been excellent and I have enjoyed my time here to the fullest. I did great in my academics, learned various subjects, networked with people, participated in various student-run organizations on campus, and made plenty of friends. My experience during my Master's was awesome and hence I decided to pursue my PhD from the same University.

The University of Michigan has 3 campuses, Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint. In the Ann Arbor campus, there are a lot of events going on in the downtown area. There are many libraries, and more than 100 student organizations. I took part in 2 of them: the Graduate Student Advisory Council (GSAC), and Wolverine Support Network (WSN). I currently am a member of the organization Clean-up Campus. I had a lot of fun in these organs and we organized plenty of events such as bowling, lunch with faculties, game night, movie night, etc.

"Yes, I submitted SoP, 3 LoRs, CV. Interview for the PhD program was technical - questions about my field, and past projects. No implementation questions were asked, only conceptual. " My advisor is my most preferred advisor in my field, university also ranks well in terms of rankings and reputation. Overall experience has been really good. It is filled with diverse learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. The vibrant campus life, and supportive faculty, fostered an environment of growth and discovery. We can also engage in various clubs and organizations which helps develop leadership skills. Research collaboration opportunities are immense, this helps me as a PhD student to understand various perspectives of a problem I am trying to work on.

Campus life is also good, a feeling of connection to everyone in my cohort. They have a class for first year graduate students to connect and I found some friends from there. A lot of campus wide events happen frequently. Research facilities are amazing.
