University of North Texas Eligibility for Indian Students
UNT applies uniform baseline academic and English requirements for international applicants, with departmental add-ons for competitive programs like Computer Science, Data Science, and the G. Brint Ryan MBA. Indian applicants should read percentage floors first, then map their English test score to UNT’s minimums.
Core academic thresholds Indian applicants meet at UNT:
- UG general entry: Class XII (CBSE / ISC / state board) at 65 percent aggregate or higher, with subject prerequisites where the intended major requires them (Mathematics for engineering, Physics for physics-adjacent majors).
- PG general entry: Four-year Bachelor’s degree at 3.0 GPA or higher (roughly 75 percent Indian aggregate) from a recognised university.
- PhD entry: Bachelor’s or Master’s at 3.5 GPA (roughly 87 percent) plus a research statement and a faculty supervisor fit.
- MBA at Ryan College of Business: Bachelor’s at 3.0 GPA or higher, with the MBA program itself preferring 3.5 GPA for competitive review.
UNT accepts multiple English proficiency tests. Institution-wide minimums per the official UNT English Language Requirements page:

| PTE Academic | 53 |
| Duolingo English Test | 100 |
| Cambridge C1 Advanced / C2 Proficiency | C1 |
University of North Texas IELTS Waiver for Indian Students
UNT publishes four English-proficiency waiver routes, and two are directly usable by Indian applicants without leaving India:
- Prior education waiver: If you completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an English-medium college or university where instruction was verifiably in English, UNT waives IELTS or TOEFL.
- UNT Intensive English Language Institute (IELI): Completion of Level 6 at UNT’s own IELI satisfies English proficiency, useful if your test score falls short.
- Academic coursework: Two university-level English courses totalling 6 credit hours with a grade of C or higher counts as proof.
- Citizenship route: Passport holders of 29 designated English-majority countries are exempt (India is not on the exempt list, so this route usually does not apply to Indian nationals).
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official University of North Texas international admissions page for your chosen program before applying.
University of North Texas PG Programs and Requirements
UNT’s graduate menu leans heavily into STEM and business tracks that dominate the Indian applicant pipeline. Every PG program applies the university’s institutional minimums as a floor, with individual departments layering in prerequisite coursework, portfolio, or work-experience asks. Base graduate tuition for international students starts at around USD 16,505 per semester of full-time load — see the detailed fee breakdown for course-wise tuition and mandatory fees.

University of North Texas MBA Admissions
The MBA is delivered by the G. Brint Ryan College of Business and admits Indian applicants for Fall, Spring, and Summer intakes, with Fall drawing the most international students. Applicants are evaluated on academics, standardised test scores (where required), work experience, essays, and recommendations. UNT’s MBA is offered in full-time on-campus and online formats.
MBA GMAT and GRE Policy
UNT MBA accepts either GMAT 550+ or GRE Quantitative 155+. The score requirement is waived if you hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s with a 3.0 GPA or higher from a regionally accredited university, or already hold a doctoral degree. Indian applicants from AICTE-accredited engineering colleges typically qualify for the waiver on GPA grounds.
MBA Application Deadlines
Application deadlines follow the graduate university calendar: April 15, 2027 for Fall 2027 primary intake, October 15, 2026 for Spring 2027. Online MBA cohorts admit on a rolling basis without a fixed cut-off. Base tuition, class profile, and cohort-level data are available on the MBA program page.
Reality check: Aim for a 3.5 GPA and 2+ years of full-time work experience for a competitive review, even though the university floor is 3.0. Ryan MBA reviewers weight experience heavily for scholarship allocation.
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official UNT Ryan College of Business page for your chosen program before applying.
University of North Texas PhD Admissions
UNT is classified as an R1 highest research activity institution and admits PhDs into over 40 doctoral tracks across engineering, computer science, information science, business, education, and the arts. Indian applicants apply through the same graduate portal as master’s applicants but face a higher academic bar and a research-fit review.
PhD Eligibility
The PhD floor is a 3.5 GPA in a Bachelor’s or Master’s from a recognised university (roughly 87 percent Indian aggregate), plus GRE for many programs (departmentally set), a statement of purpose, three letters of recommendation, and an academic writing sample where the department requires it.
PhD Funding and Assistantships
Most funded PhD offers bundle a teaching or research assistantship, a full tuition waiver, and a stipend. Stipend rates vary by department and academic year. Applicants should identify a faculty supervisor early and align their research statement to that supervisor’s active grants. See funding for Indian students for a complete list.
Planning note: Contact prospective PhD supervisors 6 to 8 months before the deadline. Departmental assistantship allocation is often decided before the university’s official April 15 cut-off.
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Toulouse Graduate School page for your chosen program before applying.
University of North Texas Application Process
UNT’s application flow differs slightly between undergraduate and graduate applicants, but both channels feed into the myUNT portal for status tracking. The process is designed to complete in 4 to 6 weeks once all documents are uploaded.
- Choose your application portal. Undergraduate applicants use Apply Texas or the Common Application. Graduate applicants use the Liaison CAS portal at unt2025.liaisoncas.com.
- Pay the application fee of USD 85 for undergraduate (around INR 8,133) or USD 75 for graduate (around INR 7,177) on the UNT international admissions portal within 3 to 5 days of submission.
- Submit official academic credentials. Upload attested transcripts and degree certificates from every institution attended, with certified English translations where documents are in a regional language.
- Send English proficiency scores. Route IELTS, TOEFL (school code 6481), PTE, or Duolingo results electronically through the testing service.
- Complete department-specific asks. Upload statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, CV, and portfolio where the program requires them.
- Monitor status through the myUNT portal and respond promptly to any document requests from the admissions office.
University of North Texas Admission Decisions
Admission decisions are released on a rolling basis, meaning the university reviews applications as they arrive rather than waiting for a hard batch deadline. Indian applicants typically hear back within 4 to 6 weeks of submitting a complete application, though STEM graduate departments occasionally take up to 8 weeks during peak Fall cycles.
- Offer letter timing: 4 to 8 weeks from complete application.
- Acceptance response window: typically 30 days to accept and pay the enrollment deposit.
- Conditional offers: issued to applicants meeting academics but needing English proof, redeemable through the IELI Level 6 route.
- Deferrals: UNT allows one-term deferral for admitted international students where visa or personal circumstances delay arrival.
- I-20 issuance: initiated only after full admission and financial documentation clearance through iNorthTX.
University of North Texas Documents Required
Indian applicants should assemble the paperwork checklist below before starting the application, since the Apply Texas and Liaison CAS forms will time out if you upload piecemeal. Every document must be legible, in colour scan, and accompanied by a certified English translation where the original is in Hindi or a regional language.
- Valid passport (bio-data page, minimum 6 months validity beyond intended arrival).
- Official Class X and Class XII mark sheets and certificates (undergraduate applicants).
- Official Bachelor’s degree certificate and consolidated mark sheet (graduate applicants).
- Official Master’s degree certificate where prior graduate study is relevant (PhD applicants).
- English proficiency score report (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or Duolingo) sent electronically by the testing service.
- Statement of Purpose (1 to 2 pages, program-specific).
- Two or three Letters of Recommendation from academic or professional referees.
- Updated CV or resume.
- Financial affidavit plus recent bank statement covering at least one year of tuition and living costs (required for I-20).
- Work experience letters (MBA and select master’s programs).
- Portfolio or writing sample (Music, Media Arts, PhD applicants).
University of North Texas Acceptance Rate
UNT’s overall acceptance rate sits at around 72 percent, based on published third-party estimates from recent admissions cycles. The university does not publish an official institutional acceptance figure, but the international-applicant band tracks around 55 to 65 percent for the Fall cycle where selectivity peaks. Read the university’s ranking band alongside acceptance data to gauge program competitiveness.
How Selective is UNT for Indian STEM Applicants?
MS Computer Science, MS Data Science, and MS Artificial Intelligence run tighter than the university average because of dense Indian and Chinese applicant pools competing for capped seats. Expect a working range of 50 to 65 percent for these programs versus the 72 percent university-level figure.
What Improves your UNT Admission Odds?
A GPA of 3.3 or higher, IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 90, a targeted SOP tied to specific UNT faculty or research labs, and demonstrated internship or project work in your intended field lift your candidacy well above the median admitted student.
Insider note: UNT reviewers value project-based evidence over test scores at the graduate level. A GitHub link, published research, or a Kaggle notebook attached to your SOP moves the needle more than an extra 10 points on GRE Quant.
USA Student Visa for University of North Texas
Indian students admitted to UNT apply for the F-1 student visa at a US consulate in India (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, or Hyderabad). Once UNT issues the I-20 form after admission and financial verification, pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (around INR 33,492), complete the DS-160 form, pay the visa fee of USD 185 (around INR 17,703), and book a biometrics plus interview appointment. Carry the I-20, admission letter, SEVIS receipt, DS-160 confirmation, passport-size photos, and financial documentation (bank statements, education loan sanction letter, sponsor affidavit) to the interview.
After arrival, complete the mandatory international student check-in through UNT’s iNorthTX portal within the first week of classes to activate your F-1 status and receive campus registration clearance.
2026 update: US consulates in India are running dropbox waivers for F-1 renewals and prioritising student appointments between April and August. Book your interview slot the moment your I-20 arrives.
Tips for University of North Texas Admissions
The following tips are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at UNT and reflect what typically shifts a borderline application into an admit.
- Target the Fall primary intake. Program breadth, assistantship funding, and Indian student cohort size all peak in Fall, so hold your application unless you have a strong reason for Spring.
- Submit 8 to 10 weeks early. Rolling review rewards early submission, and STEM assistantships close before official deadlines.
- Attach GitHub or portfolio links to your SOP for CS, Data Science, and Digital Retailing programs.
- Use the GMAT/GRE waiver for MBA if your Bachelor’s GPA is 3.0 or higher — Ryan College honours the waiver strictly on GPA.
- Line up your I-20 financials early. UNT requires proof of one year’s tuition plus living costs before issuing the I-20, and education loan sanction letters take 3 to 4 weeks to process.
- Name a UNT faculty member in your SOP for PhD and research-heavy MS programs — supervisor fit is the strongest single admission signal.
University of North Texas Admissions Checklist

- I dislike about the placements in my university because, as we know that the job market isn't that good now-a-days. We had a career fair, we have submitted like resumes to each of the company , but till now we haven't received any good news from them which is so disappointing. No one have have received any calls from the company. So, its like we didn't even participate in this career fair. I genuinely thought it as like a time waste.

- UNT is student based university where you get more than what you ever think you need. I hadn't expected that you ask and university already has that.
- I would definitely recommend Indians to come learn here in the environment you feel inclusive at. You will for sure learn all aspects of life from living alone independently to knowing diverse students and kind staff.
- Encouraging work environment and you can get an on campus job via handshake. You should be goal oriented and adaptable to changes. YES it is COMPETITIVE but is isn't impossible. It is all worth it.

- I dislike how Indian students around the campus move without smiling at anyone, as the culture here is to be friendly and give smile at strangers.
- Too many Indian students, especially from Telangana and AP.
- Fees is huge, but comparatively less to surrounding universities.
Scholarship
- I had applied to eagle scholarship as in every student applies for that but I haven't heard anyone get that. After all research from so many sources in conclusion - No scholarships for Masters Students at UNT. No one has received since past 3 years as per previous students and professors knowledge.
- Unlike master's students, undergraduate (bachelor's degree) students at the University of North Texas (UNT) have access to scholarship opportunities. These scholarships can help reduce the cost of tuition and may be awarded based on various factors, such as academic performance, extracurricular involvement, financial need, or specific fields of study.
- If you work on campus at Library or Teaching/research assistant position you get wavier, and you pay 40% less tuition.

- The university is huge and one needs to take either bus or cycle to move from one corner to another. The space offered to students for extracurricular activities is notable.
- The university hosts multiple organizations every year to be a part of. The events are all free for the students and students get a chance to socialize at a global level.
Dislikes
- The university is open to anyone and everyone. Hence, it doesn't have a secured access only for the students and employers of the university. Security might be one thing to consider while being on campus.
- Thefts of e-vehicles and valuables around campus is a regular concern. One should take care of their belongings while on-campus.
- Accommodation around the university is a major issue. The rent is higher than average, and students living off-campus have to consider living far from university.
Scholarship
- The scholarships can be accessed through the Eagle Scholarship Portal of the University of North Texas. Most of the scholarships are applied after one year of study at the university. The university provides scholarships of up to $1,000 (500$ for fall, 500$ for spring). Students can also apply for an in-state tuition fee waiver after getting a scholarship.

The computer labs are equipped with state-of-the-art technology, providing an optimal environment for practical applications and coding experiments. However, what truly captivates me is the game development lab. It offers a unique opportunity for computer science students like me to delve into the world of game design, fostering creativity and technical skills.
- The university's Olympic-grade gym, complete with full-time coaches, has been a delightful surprise. Being able to access such top-notch facilities and receive expert guidance free of cost is a remarkable benefit. Furthermore, the climbing wall caters to my passion for adventure and offers an exhilarating way to stay physically active.
Dislikes
- While there are many aspects of the University of North Texas (UNT) that I greatly appreciate, it is important to acknowledge that no institution is without its flaws. Here are a few points that I personally find less favorable about UNT.
- One area of concern is the parking situation on campus. Finding a parking spot can be quite challenging, especially during peak hours. This can lead to frustration and wasted time as students, faculty, and staff search for available parking spaces. Additionally, the cost of parking permits and fines for violations can be a burden on students' finances.
- Another aspect that some students may find disappointing is the limited availability of certain courses or class sections. Due to high demand and limited resources, it can be challenging to enroll in specific classes, causing delays in degree progression and hindering students' ability to pursue their desired academic path.
Overview
The overall experience at the University of North Texas (UNT) is a vibrant mix of knowledgeable faculty, well-stocked libraries, and state-of-the-art facilities like the game development lab and Olympic-grade gym, with some challenges such as parking and limited course availability.
Scholarship
I got a Library Student Assistant position which comes with a 40% tuition waiver and a monthly stipend of $1200. Just had to apply for the post, submit my resume and a face to face interview.
