Planning note: UNT is one of the few Texas R1 universities that keeps Spring intake open for most master’s programs, so Indian applicants who miss Fall have a genuine second window rather than a symbolic one.

Departmental deadlines sit earlier than the university-wide dates for some programs. UNT’s Common Application route is UG-only. Graduate applicants use the UNT Graduate CAS regardless of program.

University of North Texas Eligibility for Indian Students

Eligibility at University of North Texas covers two floors: an academic threshold based on your last completed qualification, and an English proficiency test score. Indian degrees translate cleanly to the UNT grading scale, and Class XII marks are accepted as the freshman academic record.

  • Freshman UG: Class XII at 65 percent or higher, English medium schooling counts toward the English requirement.
  • Master’s: Bachelor’s degree at 3.0 GPA or about 65 percent, from a recognised Indian university.
  • Doctoral: Bachelor’s or master’s at 3.5 GPA or about 75 percent, plus a research statement.

English proficiency floors apply to all international applicants unless a waiver applies. UNT accepts four tests, with scores less than two years old.

UNT IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

University of North Texas waives the English proficiency test for applicants who fit one of these pathways:

  • You completed a full degree in a country where English is the sole official language of instruction.
  • You completed secondary or tertiary study at a UNT-recognised English-medium institution.
  • You completed IELI level 6, UNT’s in-house Intensive English Language Institute pathway, in place of a test.

Indian applicants from CBSE, ICSE, and most state boards typically qualify for the English-medium schooling route, though UNT confirms the waiver on a case-by-case basis. If you do not meet either the test floor or a waiver pathway, UNT offers conditional admission that pairs your degree offer with an IELI seat.

University of North Texas PG Programs and English Scores for Indian Students

UNT runs 87 master’s programs across engineering, business, information science, and the arts. Indian applicants cluster into STEM-designated master’s, which unlock the 36-month STEM OPT extension after graduation. Base tuition for graduate international students starts at USD 17,199 per year (INR 16.25 Lakhs) for the College of Education and reaches USD 19,809 (INR 18.72 Lakhs) for the College of Business. For the full breakdown of tuition by course, see the course-wise fees breakdown.

Insider note: UNT’s College of Business master’s carry a higher tuition band (about USD 19,809 per year or INR 18.72 Lakhs) than engineering or information science, so budget-conscious Indian applicants often pick MS Information Science or MS Advanced Data Analytics for a similar STEM OPT outcome at lower cost.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official University of North Texas international applicants page for your chosen program before applying.

University of North Texas UG Programs for Indian Students

UNT offers 116 undergraduate degrees. Indian freshman applicants apply either through the Common App or Apply Texas, with Class XII marks read against a 3.0 GPA floor (about 65 percent). The College of Engineering and the New College at Frisco run the largest bachelor’s cohorts drawing Indian students.

UNT does not require SAT or ACT for admission decisions from Indian freshmen. Test scores are still recommended for scholarship consideration. Indian students admitted by 1 March 2027 are automatically reviewed for the UNT Excellence Scholarship.

University of North Texas MBA Admissions for Indian Students

The UNT MBA sits at the G. Brint Ryan College of Business, and admits into Fall and Spring. Rolling review applies, so files are read as they arrive rather than in fixed rounds. Indian applicants use the UNT Graduate CAS and follow the same graduate deadlines: 15 April 2027 for Fall 2027 and 15 October 2026 for Spring 2027.

UNT MBA Eligibility and Test Policy

Base entry requires a Bachelor’s at 3.0 GPA or about 65 percent, and IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 79. The Ryan MBA remains test-optional for applicants whose undergraduate GPA is 3.2 or higher, or who bring at least three years of full-time work experience. Applicants outside those bands submit GMAT (school code 6DP-8M-55) or GRE (6481). No stated GMAT floor is published.

UNT MBA Variants

  • Full-time MBA: two-year on-campus format, open to international students on F-1.
  • Professional MBA: Denton evening format for working professionals with about two years of experience.
  • Online MBA: not typically available to F-1 international applicants, since online-only loads do not maintain F-1 status.

Ryan MBA base tuition sits around USD 19,809 per year (INR 18.72 Lakhs) plus mandatory fees. For the MBA program page with cost, curriculum, and placement detail, review the linked breakdown. Ryan does not offer a formal interview stage across all cohorts, though selected files may be invited to a departmental conversation before the final decision.

University of North Texas PhD Admissions for Indian Students

UNT is a Carnegie R1 university with 40 doctoral programs. PhD admission is department-driven, meaning faculty advisors sign off on files before the Graduate School issues the decision. Indian applicants apply through the UNT Graduate CAS with the same 15 April 2027 Fall 2027 deadline, though many departments close earlier for full funding consideration.

UNT PhD Eligibility

  • Bachelor’s or master’s at 3.5 GPA (about 75 percent) from a recognised institution.
  • Standardised tests: GRE required by most departments, though several PhD programs now waive it.
  • English: IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 79, unless a waiver applies.
  • Statement of research interest naming at least one UNT faculty advisor.

UNT PhD Funding for Indian Applicants

Most fully-admitted UNT doctoral students receive a Teaching Assistantship or Research Assistantship package that covers tuition plus a stipend for the academic year. Assistantship stipends vary by department. For the current stipend bands and named fellowships (Toulouse Doctoral Fellowship, university-wide awards), see the funding for Indian students page.

University of North Texas Application Process for Indian Students

UNT keeps the application process for Indian students to six steps. The route diverges at step one based on level: undergraduate applicants pick either Apply Texas or the Common Application, while graduate applicants use the UNT Graduate CAS. All portals accept credit card, wire, or check payment in USD only.

  1. Open the correct portal: Apply Texas or Common App for UG, or UNT Graduate CAS for master’s and PhD.
  2. Pay the application fee of USD 85 UG (INR 8,033) or USD 75 grad (INR 7,088) at submission.
  3. Upload official transcripts in English and the original language, from every institution attended.
  4. Send English test scores (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or DET) or waiver evidence.
  5. Add SOP, letters of recommendation, and a CV or resume as required by your program.
  6. Track decisions and I-20 issuance through myUNT.

UNT Admission Decisions Timeline

UNT reviews on a rolling basis. Undergraduate decisions typically arrive within four to six weeks of a complete file. Graduate decisions take six to ten weeks, since department review is layered on top of Graduate School review. Admitted students receive a conditional letter first, followed by the I-20 once financial documents clear. UNT allows a one-term deferral for admitted international students who cannot arrive on time, subject to program approval.

University of North Texas Documents Required for Indian Applicants

UNT requires a defined document set from every Indian applicant. Missing or unofficial documents are the single most common reason files stall at review. Send documents directly to UNT rather than through the applicant portal upload when the program asks for originals.

  • Passport bio page (valid at least six months past intended arrival).
  • Official academic transcripts from every institution attended, in English and original language.
  • Degree certificate or provisional degree letter (for graduate applicants).
  • Class X and XII marksheets (for freshman applicants).
  • Statement of Purpose tailored to the specific UNT program.
  • Two or three Letters of Recommendation on institutional letterhead.
  • Updated CV or resume.
  • English test score report (TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, or DET) sent from the testing agency.
  • Financial documents covering one year of tuition and living costs (for I-20 issuance).
  • Work experience letters (for MBA and select master’s programs).

Before you apply: UNT does not accept notarised or photocopied English translations of Indian transcripts. Get the English version issued directly by your university’s controller of examinations, or use a certified translator on record.

University of North Texas Acceptance Rate for Indian Students

UNT does not publish an official acceptance rate for Indian applicants specifically. Institutional data points to an overall acceptance rate of about 72 percent, which classifies UNT as an access-oriented public research university (it admits most applicants who meet its stated requirements) rather than a highly selective one. For international applicants specifically, the most recent Fall cycle recorded 2,210 international applications and 1,340 offers, working out to an international acceptance rate of about 60 percent.

Why UNT Runs a High Acceptance Rate

UNT is one of the largest US public universities by enrolment, with a target of near 47,000 students on the Denton campus. High-volume access is part of the institutional mandate, and the acceptance rate reflects that. Selective master’s programs, particularly at the Ryan College of Business and the College of Engineering, still admit closer to 40 to 50 percent.

Selectivity by Program for Indian Applicants

The Indian applicant pool skews toward STEM-designated master’s, which are the most selective inside UNT. MS Computer Science, MS Data Science, and MS Business Analytics run selectivity closer to 50 to 65 percent. MS Information Science and general engineering master’s run above 70 percent. See the ranking band page for how UNT stacks up against peer Texas R1s.

Insider note: A 60 percent international acceptance rate does not mean 60 percent of Indian applicants clear every program. Departmental thresholds inside the Ryan College of Business and the College of Engineering are meaningfully higher than the university average.

USA F-1 Student Visa Process for University of North Texas

Indian students admitted to University of North Texas enter the US on the F-1 student visa, the standard non-immigrant category for full-time degree study. UNT issues the Form I-20 once your admission is confirmed and financial documents clear. You then pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (INR 33,075), book a US embassy or consulate appointment in India, and attend a visa interview at Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, or Hyderabad.

At the interview, carry your I-20, passport, DS-160 confirmation, visa fee receipt, financial proof for at least one year of tuition and living costs, and the UNT admission letter. On arrival in Denton, complete immigration check-in with UNT International Affairs within 30 days of the program start date to activate your SEVIS record. F-1 graduates can access 12-month OPT, plus a 24-month STEM OPT extension for the many STEM-designated UNT master’s programs.

2026 update: US consulates in India are running visa slots months in advance for the Fall 2027 cycle. Apply for your F-1 slot the day your I-20 lands, rather than waiting for the visa interview waiver window to open.

Tips and Checklist for University of North Texas Admissions

The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at UNT. Combine them with your program page for a tighter file.

  • Apply eight to twelve weeks early even in rolling review, since scholarship rounds close first.
  • Request official transcripts six to eight weeks before your target deadline from your Indian university’s examination controller.
  • Book the IELTS or TOEFL at least 10 weeks before deadline to leave room for a retake.
  • Line up an academic and a professional recommender early, and share your SOP with them.
  • Tailor the SOP to a named UNT faculty or research group, especially for PhD files.
  • Confirm your English waiver in writing with UNT admissions if you plan to skip IELTS.
  • Keep financial documents dated within six months of your I-20 request.
  • Aim for a March I-20 for Fall intake, so you can secure a summer visa slot in India.

Indian applicants tend to underestimate the Ryan College of Business threshold and overestimate MS Computer Science. Recalibrate expectations against the two programmes’ actual selectivity before finalising your shortlist.

University of North Texas admissions reward preparation over pedigree. Meet the GPA and English floor, tailor the SOP to a named program, and file eight weeks ahead of the deadline. Indian applicants who follow this rhythm clear at consistently above the university-wide 60 percent international rate.

Scholarship

  • I received a college of engineering scholarship, which is competitive-based. Every year UNT opens a lot of scholarships, like 400 thousand dollars. These scholarships can be applied every time using the Eagle Scholarship Portal, and each departments list their own scholarships here, and people can apply it with their own documents and statements. There are good options: if people receive CSW, they get a TGS waiver.

Scholarship

  • I had applied to eagle scholarship as in every student applies for that but I haven't heard anyone get that. After all research from so many sources in conclusion - No scholarships for Masters Students at UNT. No one has received since past 3 years as per previous students and professors knowledge.
  • Unlike master's students, undergraduate (bachelor's degree) students at the University of North Texas (UNT) have access to scholarship opportunities. These scholarships can help reduce the cost of tuition and may be awarded based on various factors, such as academic performance, extracurricular involvement, financial need, or specific fields of study.
  • If you work on campus at Library or Teaching/research assistant position you get wavier, and you pay 40% less tuition.

Scholarship

  • The scholarships can be accessed through the Eagle Scholarship Portal of the University of North Texas. Most of the scholarships are applied after one year of study at the university. The university provides scholarships of up to $1,000 (500$ for fall, 500$ for spring). Students can also apply for an in-state tuition fee waiver after getting a scholarship.
  • I received a Texas Public Education Grant of $500 for the fall 2024 semester.
  • On average, 5-10% of the students receive scholarships every year.

Overview

The overall experience at the University of North Texas (UNT) is a vibrant mix of knowledgeable faculty, well-stocked libraries, and state-of-the-art facilities like the game development lab and Olympic-grade gym, with some challenges such as parking and limited course availability.

Scholarship

I got a Library Student Assistant position which comes with a 40% tuition waiver and a monthly stipend of $1200. Just had to apply for the post, submit my resume and a face to face interview.
