Postgraduate applicants:

  • Academic: A four-year Indian bachelor’s degree with minimum 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 for most programmes, 60% or CGPA 6.5/10 recommended for engineering and computer science tracks.
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 4.0 (1-6 scale) / 79 (0-120 legacy scale), or IELTS 6.5 overall, or Duolingo 115.
  • Credential verification: WES course-by-course evaluation for the Indian bachelor’s degree, uploaded to the application portal before the deadline.

  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 4.0 (1-6 scale) / 79 (0-120 legacy scale), or IELTS 6.5 overall.

Every English test score above is copied verbatim from the Purdue University Northwest Graduate Studies portal for the 2026-2027 cycle. TOEFL iBT scores must appear on both scales through the 2026-2028 dual-reporting window.

Purdue University Northwest Acceptance Rate 2027

Purdue University Northwest is moderately selective, with an estimated overall acceptance rate of 73% (estimated). The university does not publish a single institutional acceptance rate, and the figure varies substantially by programme, with STEM masters running tighter than humanities admissions.

Third-party sources place PNW in the 70% to 76% band consistently over the past three admission cycles. Indian applicants meeting the recommended academic and English thresholds face favourable odds relative to R1 US public universities.

Reality check: A 73% overall rate does not mean easy admission for every programme. MS Computer Science, MS Nursing and MBA are the tightest at Purdue University Northwest, with Indian applicants typically clearing 65% bachelor’s percentages and 6.5 IELTS to secure offers.

Purdue University Northwest Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

Purdue University Northwest does not publish a single institutional placement rate, but Career Services reports strong outcomes for MS Computer Science, MS Nursing and MBA graduates within the Chicago metropolitan employer base.

  • Employment context: The Hammond campus sits inside the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metropolitan statistical area, giving graduates direct access to a Tier-1 US job market of 4.6 million workers.
  • Median entry salary (market median): US Bureau of Labor Statistics data puts entry-level computer scientist and nursing salaries in Indiana at $65,000 to $80,000 per year (₹62.60 lakh to ₹77.04 lakh), typical for Purdue University Northwest STEM graduates.
  • Recruiter base: Common recruiting sectors include healthcare systems, steel and manufacturing, logistics, financial services and regional technology employers, verify individual company lists at the university Career Center.
  • Post-study work: All F-1 graduates receive 12 months OPT, extended by 24 months for STEM-designated programmes like Computer Science and Engineering, giving Indian graduates up to 36 months of US work eligibility.
  • Careers support: Dedicated international career advisor, on-campus career fairs each semester, resume and interview workshops targeting US employer conventions.

Insider note: Indian STEM graduates from Purdue University Northwest typically use the 36-month OPT window to build H-1B sponsorship history at Chicago-area healthcare systems, logistics firms and mid-market technology employers, rather than chasing FAANG-tier roles that recruit heavier from ranked R1 schools.

Purdue University Northwest vs Peer Universities

Indian applicants weighing Purdue University Northwest usually compare it against mid-tier US public universities in the Midwest and other Purdue system institutions. The table compares on QS World rank, average annual PG fee and headline differentiator.

UniversityQS World 2027Avg Annual PG Fee (USD, INR lakh)Differentiator

Purdue University Northwest stands out on cost, delivering a Purdue-affiliated degree at half or less the tuition of Purdue West Lafayette while sitting inside the same Chicago labour market. It trails on research output and world rank.

Indian applicants who value affordability, STEM OPT eligibility and Chicago proximity over global rank pick Purdue University Northwest. Those chasing top-100 world rankings should look at Purdue West Lafayette or UIC instead.

Purdue University Northwest fits Indian applicants targeting a US masters at $19,016 total tuition (₹18.32 lakh) against a $65,000 to $80,000 entry salary, delivering strong ROI within a Purdue-brand pathway. The study in USA route through Hammond suits applicants who value proximity to Chicago employers and 36-month STEM OPT eligibility over headline world rank.

Purdue University Northwest is not the right fit for applicants set on a top-100 global rank or a research-heavy R1 environment. Those profiles should target Purdue University West Lafayette or the University of Illinois Chicago instead.

I chose Purdue University Northwest (PNW) as it is a part of Purdue System and master level programs are maintained by The Graduate School - Purdue University throughout 4 campuses. The tuition and fees is very less, one can easily afford and you get top quality education by great educators. Other factors that excited me - this campus is just 45 minutes away from Chicago which makes easy to search jobs, internships and as well as able to socialize with people.

Overview

Purdue University Northwest is a college that offers a good education at an affordable price. I watched my brother complete his engineering education there and was inspired mostly by his example. This college was also close to home.

Fees

When I first applied to Purdue, there was an application fee of no more than $50 but because I applied physically at the university, the charge was waived. When I looked at my first payment for my first semester of college, I noticed that there were additional charges for the classes I was taking. There was a charge for the lab that I was registered for as well as an additional cost for my math class that I was registered for as well.
