Purdue University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Indian applicants meet Purdue’s graduate admission requirements with a 4-year Indian bachelor’s degree from a UGC-recognised university plus verified English proficiency.
Postgraduate requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree with minimum 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 (recommended); most competitive programmes admit at 70%+ or CGPA 7.5/10
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 4.0 (1-6 scale) with Writing 4.0, Speaking 3.5, Listening 3.5, Reading 4.0, or IELTS 6.5 with Reading 6.5, Listening 6.0, Speaking 6.0, Writing 5.5, or Duolingo English Test 115
- Credential verification through WES ICAP or NACES-member evaluator for select departments
- GRE required for a subset of engineering, statistics and quantitative science programmes; MBA requires GMAT or GRE
Undergraduate requirements:
- Class 12 (CBSE, ISC or State Board) with minimum 75% to 85% (recommended) for general admission; Engineering and CS admissions competitive above 90%
- English proficiency test scores as per graduate minimums above; SAT or ACT is optional through Fall 2027
Key insight: Purdue waives English proficiency testing only for degrees completed within the last 36 months at institutions where English is both the medium of instruction and the country’s native language, which excludes almost all Indian undergraduate degrees regardless of English-medium instruction.
Purdue University Acceptance Rate 2027
Purdue University’s overall undergraduate acceptance rate sits at approximately 53% (estimated), though selectivity varies sharply by college. Graduate programme acceptance rates are not centrally published and range from single-digit percentages in Computer Science to 40%+ in some general graduate departments.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 (Fall entry) | 53% (estimated) | Stable |
| 2025 (Fall entry) | 53% (estimated) | Stable |
Undergraduate admissions to the College of Engineering and Computer Science departments run substantially more selective than the university-wide rate. Indian applicants targeting Engineering typically need Class 12 scores above 90% and strong extracurricular records.
Reality check: The headline 53% number understates the difficulty of Purdue’s flagship Engineering and CS admits. Indian applicants should treat the departmental yield rate, not the university-wide rate, as the working benchmark for admission planning.

Purdue University vs Peer Universities
Indian MS applicants typically weigh Purdue against other Big Ten public research universities with strong engineering pipelines and against comparable STEM-heavy public institutions.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 | Avg Annual MS Engg Fee | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Purdue University | #100 | #25 in USA | USD 30,318 (INR 29.0 lakh) | Largest university propulsion lab; strong aerospace and industrial engg pipeline |
| University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign | #69 | NA | USD 34,000 (INR 32.5 lakh, estimated) | Top-ranked CS department; deep Silicon Valley recruiting network |
| Georgia Institute of Technology | #83 | NA | USD 34,000 (INR 32.5 lakh, estimated) | Top-tier engineering brand; Atlanta tech-hub proximity |
| University of Michigan Ann Arbor | #26 | NA | USD 55,000 (INR 52.6 lakh, estimated) | Higher rank but significantly higher tuition |
| Texas A&M University | #155 | NA | USD 27,000 (INR 25.8 lakh, estimated) | Lower cost engineering pathway; large Indian cohort |
Purdue’s edge is aerospace and industrial engineering depth at a mid-range tuition point. Indian applicants who prioritise total cost of attendance over rank marginally often pick Purdue over higher-ranked peers.
Purdue University suits Indian STEM applicants with a Class 12 or bachelor’s academic record in the 70% to 90% band who want a 2-year MS at roughly INR 78 lakh total investment, with median salaries of INR 90 lakh to INR 125 lakh anchoring 3-year to 4-year payback. The STEM OPT extension pathway and Purdue’s aerospace and industrial engineering depth are the single strongest reasons Indian applicants pick Purdue over other Big Ten publics.
Purdue is not the right pick for applicants prioritising a top-30 global QS rank or a coastal metropolitan campus setting; Indian applicants with that priority typically compare against University of Michigan Ann Arbor instead, accepting a higher tuition load in return for the rank and location premium.
Purdue University FAQs
Ques. How long does OPT last at Purdue for STEM MS graduates?
Ans. F-1 visa holders graduating from Purdue’s STEM-designated MS programmes qualify for 12 months of standard Optional Practical Training plus a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving up to 36 months of post-completion work authorisation. Most Purdue engineering, computer science, data science and quantitative science master’s programmes carry STEM designation. Applicants should confirm STEM CIP code eligibility for their specific programme through the International Students and Scholars office before enrolling.
Ques. Does Purdue accept 3-year Indian bachelor’s degrees for MS admission?
Ans. Purdue Graduate School accepts 3-year bachelor’s degrees from Indian universities on a case-by-case basis, though most engineering and computer science departments prefer 4-year technical degrees. Indian applicants with 3-year BSc, BCom or BA degrees should submit transcripts through WES ICAP evaluation and check departmental policy before applying. Some programmes require an Indian master’s degree in addition to the 3-year bachelor’s for full admission consideration.
Ques. Can Purdue Indian students work part-time while studying?
Ans. F-1 visa students at Purdue may work up to 20 hours per week during the semester and 40 hours per week during breaks, restricted to on-campus employment during the first academic year. Graduate teaching and research assistantships count toward this limit and typically pay USD 28,000 to USD 37,760 annually. Off-campus employment through Curricular Practical Training becomes available after two consecutive academic semesters of full-time enrolment.
Ques. Is GRE required for MS admission at Purdue University?
Ans. GRE requirements vary by department at Purdue. Most engineering, statistics and quantitative science departments require or strongly recommend the GRE, while some programmes have moved to test-optional or waived GRE post-2022. Purdue Daniels School of Business requires GMAT or GRE for MBA admission. Indian applicants should verify the current GRE policy on the specific department’s admission page before scheduling the exam.
Ques. Which Indian banks approve education loans for Purdue University?
Ans. State Bank of India, HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda and non-banking lenders including Avanse and Prodigy Finance approve Purdue education loans up to INR 1.5 crore for MS programmes. SBI’s Global Ed-Vantage scheme is the most widely used route for Purdue admits. Loan approval is typically faster for STEM-designated programmes because lenders factor the 36-month OPT window into repayment risk models.
Ques. Does Purdue offer application fee waivers for Indian applicants?
Ans. Purdue Graduate School charges a USD 60 application fee for international applicants and does not routinely waive it for Indian nationals. Fee waivers are available on a limited basis for participants in specific outreach programmes, McNair Scholars alumni and applicants attending Purdue-hosted recruitment events. Undergraduate international applicants pay a USD 60 application fee with waiver criteria managed separately through the Office of Admissions.
Ques. How does credential verification work for Indian transcripts at Purdue?
Ans. Purdue Graduate School accepts self-uploaded transcripts at the application stage and requires official sealed transcripts only upon admission. Select departments require WES ICAP or NACES-member course-by-course evaluation of Indian transcripts for foreign credential equivalency. Indian applicants should order WES evaluation at least 6 to 8 weeks before the departmental deadline because Indian university document retrieval and attestation timelines vary widely.
Ques. Can Purdue MS students bring family on F-2 dependent visas?
Ans. F-1 visa holders at Purdue may sponsor spouses and unmarried children under 21 for F-2 dependent visas after receiving their own I-20 from Purdue. Indian applicants must demonstrate additional financial capacity of roughly USD 6,000 per dependent per year on top of the primary student’s cost of attendance. F-2 spouses cannot work in the United States but may enrol part-time in academic programmes; F-2 children may attend K-12 public schools free.

- Very diverse crowd, but one thing is common, everyone is highly career-focused
- Isolated college town, away from city life, so safe as well.
- State-of-the-art technology to teach students.
Campus Life
- Amazing, very wholesome campus, a lot of clubs and extracurricular activities happening on campus regularly. Around 6 different libraries, the biggest student gym in the country.
Fees
- I think tuition fees are around 16,500 to 19,000 $ per semester, and apart from that, with rent you need 1200-1400 $ per month as living costs.
Likes
- Labs and research focus of academics is at par with world's best. Access to all the software that you would need as a student and future professional.
Dislikes
- Number of companies for international student is very less, there is no dedicated initiative for international student for finding jobs.
Campus Life
- There are more than 100 student clubs at Purdue and 7 student organisations for Indian international students.
Fees
- 15k per semester/1000 per credit, whichever is lower
Likes
- Course Curriculum is designed based on the market which has high demand like cyber security, Software Development, AI and Data Science, Robotics, and Game Programming
- All the courses are affordable, especially Health Insurance comes with Good deal cause medical costs are expensive in USA.
- If we are getting bored we can go around the Down Town where it is located at the bank of the river Chattahoochee, enjoying the nature, and we can explore the beauty of Columbus city in Georgia with free of cost because University provides free shuttle as it has another campus located in down town.
Dislikes
- The thing that I don't like is that the Computer Science building still needs some upgrades especially the Computer Lab and also air-conditioning system.
- I don't like the food in the canteen.
- Recently they have made the account section where we can pay our college bills and all which is not good it nearly takes us hours to pay our fee.
Campus Life
- 2 campuses, one in the down town, which is called the riverside campus and the main campus is in the centre of the city, exit-7. We have a Columbus Indian community recently started a year ago so they usually conduct a few events and celebrate festivals as well.
- Extracurricular activities like our university is one of best in baseball game we have a team named the Cougars; it is the 2007 champions, I am not sure. For every special day, students will conduct events usually it happens every month .
Fees
- It's based on course, mostly like 1450$ per course and also we will have health insurance around 1500$ per semester. The total, I mean the entire master's degree, it costs like 25k USD. So total we have 30 credits if don't get GA and 3 courses per semester we must have to take as a foreign student in the first 3 semesters for maintaining the status. Each semester would cost like 6500$*4 for a total of 26k.
- If we get GA, we need to pay only 1500$ from health insurance, which is only per semester, so for 4 semesters it costs like 6000$ and 33 credits, where we must do a thesis if we get GA in the Computer Science Department for those 3 extra credits we will get.

- We have 3 campuses. The Purdue West Lafayette, Purdue Fort Wayne and Purdue Northwest University.
- All the above mentioned facilities are available in all the campuses libraries are huge and available all the time. Sports plus on campus gym and dedicated medical area for services.
- There are many technical flagship events and all global festivals are celebrated in the university every year.
Fees
- Each course is worth 3 credits and each course is approximately $3000. The minimum credits for international students are 9 credits only student with assistantship can have a minimum of 6 credits each semester.
- The fee charged is semesterly based on the credits you have registered plus exam fees, library fees, and resources.
- Monthly $500 to $600; rent approx. $400 off campus and on campus is $600. Food and grocery $200 per month is enough.

I chose this university because of it's reputation, affordability, education. It is amongst Top 20 schools that have tuition frozen at 2010 levels and the education improved me immensely.

As good as any campus, 3000 student clubs, 24/7 library, industry leading research.

- I like the environment during football season and basketball season because my college is ranked really high and all the games are pretty intense.
- I appreciate how everyone is part of everything and you rarely see campus empty unless it is during break.
Dislikes
- I dislike how some of the buildings are much older and need repairs.
- I understand that they want to keep some history, but at certain points these damages can hurt students.
Overview
I chose this initially for the nursing program but changed my mind. I knew this college was a great school in general, especially well-known for engineering. I decided to stick to the psychology program since it was most interesting to me. I definitely think that the campus is very diverse and that there are a lot of opportunities for students to really find what they are in college for. There are many avenues that students can connect with other students on and several resources that are typically free of charge.
Campus Life
There are several clubs and facilities available for students. There is a fitness facility that is free for all students and several organizations that cater to different interests.

"Yes, 3 LOR. Academic LORs are fine. If had a work experience you can also submit lor from your manager. SOP - mentioned why I want to do masters and how it will add value to my future, my skills and accomplishments. Resume /CV with all education, work exp, awards" One of the best universities for specialization in operations research It's quite exciting and challenging. Have to balance between academics and non academic stuff. Helps in learning task management and prioritization.
Campus Life
There are lot of events happening every day in and around campus. There are many clubs from academic, anime to sports.
Overview
I chose this program for the engineering ranking and the fact that Purdue is a well known name. My overall experience has been very good academically. purdue is a bit boring and not a party school since many students here are engineering students. The quality of education is extremely good though.
Campus Life
Lots of clubs to choose from that are often promoting themselves and recruiting new members. Student union often holds lots of fun events for students that are free. Could use more libraries on campus for student study spaces. CoRec (sports facility) is well funded and has lots of equipment and classes offered.
Likes
- "It is the best among my admits. The Electrical and Computer Engineering department is in Top 10. The fee is considerably lower as it is a public university and cost of living is lower. Excellent coursework and research."
- "Lots of efforts has been made to design the coursework that gives tightly coupled theoretical and practical knowledge and skills. Huge campus with lots of facilities. Very good administration."
Dislikes
- Not much. Its the weather that can get rough. Its mostly cold (less than 10 C) and in Jan/Feb it goes upto -25 C.
Overview
Its very good. Purdue has a strong reputation that helps from Visa interviews to placements.
Campus Life
There are hundreds of clubs covering almost everything. For example, Archipelago Music Club, running club, Wall Climbing Club, Star Wars Club, Indian Association, etc. The infrastructure is excellent. Its huge with big libraries, full wifi connectivity, and a huge Sports center. There is career guidance center, mental health counseling, health center, etc and all of these are free for full time students.
