Reality check: The 87% rate does not mean automatic admission for Indian applicants. Programme-level scrutiny is stricter for MS Computer Science, MS Data Science and MBA, where GPA equivalents above 60% and complete WES reports carry the most weight.

California State University, Los Angeles Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

Cal State LA’s Career Development Center supports STEM masters and MBA students with recruiter mixers, on-campus interviews and OPT documentation; official campus-wide placement rate is not disclosed.

  • Placement rate: Not officially disclosed; ECST graduate outcomes benefit from proximity to NASA JPL, Boeing and Northrop Grumman.
  • Median starting salary: Market median for Cal State LA MS Computer Science and Data Science graduates sits at $85,000 to $100,000 per year (₹81.06 lakh to ₹95.37 lakh); MBA graduates at $75,000 to $90,000 (₹71.53 lakh to ₹85.83 lakh) — market median, not officially disclosed.
  • Top recruiters: Amazon, Boeing, NASA JPL, Kaiser Permanente, Nike, Tesla, Northrop Grumman, and the City of LA.
  • Career support: Handshake platform for on-campus jobs; CPT authorisation from semester 2 and STEM-OPT documentation handled by the International Office.
  • Post-study work visa: F-1 OPT of 12 months at graduation, extended by 24 months for STEM-designated degrees, giving a 36-month US work window.

Insider note: For Indian MS graduates chasing STEM roles in LA and the Bay Area, the 36-month OPT window is the deciding factor. Cal State LA’s ECST STEM-designated codes (Computer Science, Data Science, Electrical Engineering) qualify, while non-STEM masters like MBA and MPH give only the base 12-month OPT.

California State University, Los Angeles vs Peer Universities

The peer set below groups four other CSU-system campuses and one national-tier California peer, compared on US News 2026 category, annual non-resident fee and one differentiator relevant to Indian applicants.

UniversityUS News 2026 CategoryAnnual Non-Resident FeeAnnual Fee (₹ INR lakh)Differentiator
California State University, Los AngelesRegional West #13$20,932₹19.96 lakh#7 US News Social Mobility rank

San Francisco State UniversityRegional West (verify)~$21,000 (verify)~₹20.03 lakh (verify)Bay Area tech proximity

Cal State LA stands out on cost-adjusted outcomes: its non-resident fee sits at the low end of the CSU peer set, while its US News Social Mobility rank is the highest among the compared campuses. Indian applicants weighing MBA universities in USA or STEM MS options often shortlist it for the ECST-plus-OPT combination at a moderate CSU fee.

California State University, Los Angeles suits Indian students who want a US STEM masters at CSU pricing, a 36-month OPT runway in the LA job market, and a large first-generation-friendly peer cohort. Total 2-year investment sits at roughly ₹40 lakh in tuition plus ₹40 to 58 lakh in living costs; median MS starting salary of $85,000 to $100,000 (₹81 lakh to ₹95 lakh) makes the payback window 2 to 3 years for STEM graduates on OPT.

It is not the right pick for students chasing top-100 QS or THE world rankings or ivy-tier brand recognition. If a research-heavy, higher-ranked profile matters more than cost, San Diego State University or the University of California campuses (Riverside, Irvine) are the realistic alternatives to consider.

California State University, Los Angeles FAQs

Ques. Which Cal State LA masters are STEM-designated for 24-month OPT?

Ans. ECST-based masters at Cal State LA carry STEM designation for the 24-month OPT extension: MS Computer Science, MS Electrical Engineering, MS Mechanical Engineering, MS Civil Engineering, MS Information Systems and MS Data Science. Non-STEM masters like MBA, MPA and MPH qualify only for the base 12-month OPT. Verify the current STEM CIP code for a specific programme on the department page before applying.

Ques. Does California State University, Los Angeles accept GRE waivers for STEM masters?

Ans. Most ECST masters at Cal State LA list GRE as optional or waived for Indian applicants holding a 4-year BE or BTech with 60% and above. MS Computer Science and MS Data Science may still recommend GRE for competitive rounds. GRE waiver decisions are department-controlled, so check the ECST programme page and email the graduate coordinator with your undergraduate transcript for a written waiver confirmation.

Ques. What is the Cal State LA application fee and can it be waived?

Ans. The Cal State LA application fee is $70 (₹6,676) per campus applied through Cal State Apply. Fee waivers apply only to eligible US-resident applicants meeting income criteria. Indian applicants pay the full $70 by credit card at submission. Applying to multiple CSU campuses requires the $70 fee per campus, so shortlist two or three CSU targets before opening the Cal State Apply account.

Ques. How many hours can Indian students work part-time at California State University, Los Angeles?

Ans. F-1 visa rules allow Indian students at Cal State LA to work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during Fall and Spring semesters. Off-campus employment requires CPT authorisation (from semester 2 for most programmes) or Economic Hardship approval. Summer breaks allow full-time on-campus work up to 40 hours. Handshake and the Career Center list eligible on-campus roles across the library, dining, ECST labs and research centres.

Ques. Are Cal State LA transcripts required to be WES evaluated for Indian applicants?

Ans. Yes. Indian applicants to Cal State LA must submit a WES ICAP course-by-course evaluation of Bachelor’s transcripts for graduate admission. UG applicants submit Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets with translations if not in English. Budget 8 to 10 weeks for WES processing and start after your final semester results are released. WES sends the evaluation directly to Cal State LA’s Graduate Admissions office.

Ques. Does California State University, Los Angeles offer conditional admission without an English test?

Ans. Cal State LA offers conditional admission through the American Culture and Language Program (ACLP) for Indian applicants who meet academic criteria but fall short on IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo. Students complete an intensive English pathway on campus, then transition to full degree status on meeting the score minimum. This suits Indian students with strong academics but no test slot before the January deadline.

Ques. Which Indian education loan providers recognise Cal State LA?

Ans. Cal State LA is a US Department of Education-recognised institution, so all major Indian education-loan providers fund admitted students: HDFC Credila, Avanse, InCred, Auxilo, Prodigy Finance and MPOWER Financing. SBI and Bank of Baroda also fund CSU-system universities under their overseas education loan schemes. Loan applications require the I-20, admission letter and a co-signer for private lenders (except MPOWER and Prodigy).

Ques. Can dependents accompany Indian students on F-2 visas to Cal State LA?

Ans. Yes. Spouses and unmarried children under 21 can apply for F-2 dependent visas after the primary Indian student’s F-1 is issued. Cal State LA’s International Office issues a dependent I-20 on receipt of proof-of-relationship documents and additional financial documentation (roughly $8,000 per dependent per year). F-2 spouses cannot work in the US but may enrol part-time; F-2 children can attend K-12 schools full-time.

The campus life is quite fun you do have various activities every month, you can win gift cards, cash prizes and hoodies as well. They upload everything on social media and also have food pantry for students every week where you can just sign up and collect your grocery bag. They have computers and library facilities as well and good WiFi throughout the campus and also have ATM around the campus.

Overview

I was in between CSULA and CSUF however I chose CSULA primarily because they emailed me to sign up for the honors college. Once I got accepted they offered me a scholarship which primarily swayed me into choosing LA over Fullerton.

Fees

I'm guessing this means tuition. It's fairly low compared to UCs and actually, prefer it. It's about 3,400 per semester which includes any fees imaginable. Included are fees for the ASI and any fees for use of the health departments included such as the dentist, optometrist, chiropractor, etc. Book is another fee but many teachers so far tend to not require them.

Overview

At the beginning of my career as a college student at West Los Angeles college, I decided to major in psychology. I decided to have psychology as my major because I became passionate as to why some individuals act a certain way.

Fees

The fees consisted of mainly student fees that break down into health fees, and many others. But it shouldn?t de this way because not everything has to get taxed.

As a prospective M.Sc. student at California State University, Los Angeles or any university in USA, I recommend thoroughly reviewing admission requirements and deadlines. Explore funding options, prepare necessary documentation, and initiate the visa process promptly. Networking with current students or alumni can provide valuable insights, while staying organized will enhance your chances of a successful application.
