- PG academic: Bachelor’s degree with minimum CGPA 2.5 on 4.0 scale (75% Indian equivalent); 3.0 GPA (85%) preferred
- PG English: TOEFL iBT 80 (0-120 legacy scale) or 4.0 (1-6 scale); IELTS 6.5; PTE 58; Duolingo 115
- UG academic: Class 12 with 3.0 GPA on 4.0 scale (85% equivalent)

- Credential verification: WES course-by-course evaluation; official transcripts issued in sealed envelopes accepted for some departments
Key insight: CSULB accepts seven distinct English tests including the American Language Institute’s own Level 4 or 6 completion, so Indian applicants with borderline TOEFL or IELTS can enrol in a pre-sessional pathway on campus rather than retake a proficiency test from India.
California State University, Long Beach Acceptance Rate 2027
CSULB’s acceptance rate sits at 47% (estimated) based on the university’s Common Data Set and public admissions reporting. The figure has held steady in the mid-40s across recent cycles, keeping CSULB moderately selective within the CSU system.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 47% (estimated) | Stable |
| 2024 | 44% (estimated) | Marginal rise |
| 2023 | 42% (estimated) | Baseline |
Rates vary sharply by major: Nursing, Film, Dance, and Kinesiology run well below 20%, while general Business and Liberal Studies sit above the campus average. Indian PG applicants applying to Computer Science and Engineering face impaction pressure driven by domestic demand.
Reality check: The campus-wide rate misleads for competitive majors. Indian applicants targeting MS Computer Science or MS Electrical Engineering should treat the effective admit rate as sub-30% and lead with GRE (waived at CSULB but strengthens the file) and a technical statement of purpose.

California State University, Long Beach Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
CSULB posts strong long-term salary outcomes despite its teaching-first positioning, with mid-career alumni earnings placing it above many California private universities.
- Mid-career median salary: USD 121,700 (INR 116.0 lakh) as per PayScale, one of the highest among CSU campuses
- Post-study work visa: 12 months OPT for all majors; 24-month STEM OPT extension for CIP-listed STEM programmes (MS Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems)
- Top hiring sectors: Aerospace and defence (Southern California cluster), technology, consumer goods, and healthcare
- Representative employers: Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, Disney, Kaiser Permanente, and Deloitte; official recruiter list not disclosed by CSULB Career Development Center
- Career support: The Career Development Center runs semester employer fairs; the Beach Career Ready programme offers international students OPT and CPT advising
Insider note: Indian MS Engineering graduates at CSULB feed into the Southern California aerospace corridor, where H-1B sponsorship rates run higher than in the general tech market. Cluster interviews at Boeing El Segundo and Northrop Redondo Beach frequently follow the on-campus Engineering Career Fair.
California State University, Long Beach vs Peer Universities
The peer set below groups CSULB with three CSU siblings and two cross-country US publics at similar tuition and ranking tiers, using PG non-resident tuition as the comparison base.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 | Avg Annual PG Fee | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| California State University, Long Beach | #1401+ | #449 | USD 17,922 (INR 17.1 lakh) | Lowest fee among coastal California publics; large Indian cohort |
| California State University, Fullerton | #1401+ | #412 | USD 17,530 (INR 16.7 lakh) | Strong business and accounting programmes |
| San Diego State University | #801-850 | #298 | USD 19,050 (INR 18.2 lakh) | Higher research classification (R1) |
| California State University, Los Angeles | #1401+ | #502 | USD 17,450 (INR 16.6 lakh) | Central LA location; social mobility focus |

[Source: QS World University Rankings 2027, Collegedunia Study Abroad, university tuition schedules]
CSULB stands out on cost-adjusted value: at INR 33 to 34 lakh full-programme MS tuition, it undercuts most US STEM masters by 30 to 50%, while its Southern California location keeps H-1B sponsorship access strong.
California State University, Long Beach fits Indian applicants who want a US STEM master’s degree on a controlled budget, with total 2-year investment near INR 80 lakh including tuition and living, against a mid-career payoff around INR 116 lakh annual. The strongest advantage is Southern California’s aerospace and tech corridor, where CSULB’s Career Center connects OPT and STEM OPT holders directly to on-campus recruiters and the F-1 visa post-study path stretches to 36 months for STEM.
CSULB is not the fit for applicants chasing top-100 QS rankings, elite research labs, or Ivy-adjacent branding, and it is not a research doctorate destination outside its 3 doctoral programmes. Applicants prioritising research prestige should look at San Diego State University or a UC campus instead of the CSU system.
California State University, Long Beach FAQs
Ques. Does CSULB offer online master’s programmes for Indian students?
Ans. Yes, CSULB delivers select online and hybrid master’s including the MS in Emergency Services Administration, MS Health Care Administration, and MS Instructional Design. Fully online master’s programmes do not qualify for F-1 visas, so Indian students studying online must remain in India. Hybrid formats requiring in-person coursework qualify for F-1 status; check each programme page for delivery mode before applying.
Ques. Can Indian students at CSULB work part-time during studies?
Ans. Yes, F-1 visa holders at CSULB can work up to 20 hours per week during semesters and full-time during breaks, restricted to on-campus roles in the first academic year. Off-campus work requires Curricular Practical Training authorisation tied to the degree. The Career Development Center processes CPT applications, and typical on-campus student jobs pay USD 15 to 18 (INR 1,430 to 1,716) per hour.
Ques. Is the GRE required for admission to CSULB graduate programmes?
Ans. Most CSULB graduate programmes have waived the GRE requirement, including MS Computer Science, MS Electrical Engineering, and the MBA. A handful of programmes such as MA Economics and MS Statistics still recommend GRE scores. Submitting a strong GRE score (315 and above) strengthens borderline files even where optional. Confirm the current requirement on your programme’s departmental page before booking a slot.
Ques. What is the CSULB application fee for international students?
Ans. CSULB charges a non-refundable application fee of USD 70 (INR 6,674) submitted through Cal State Apply. This fee applies uniformly to both undergraduate and graduate international applicants and covers a single application per term. Fee waivers exist for domestic applicants only; international students must pay by credit card at submission. The fee is separate from any WES credential evaluation charges.
Ques. Which Indian banks provide education loans for CSULB?
Ans. CSULB is listed on the approved US universities list for major Indian lenders including SBI Global Ed-Vantage, HDFC Credila, Bank of Baroda, and ICICI Bank. Non-collateralised loans up to INR 40 lakh are typical for CSULB MS programmes at private lenders. Larger loans up to INR 75 lakh require collateral or a co-applicant with strong income. Confirm the current CSULB approval status with your lender before applying.
Ques. Does CSULB require an interview for graduate admission?
Ans. Most CSULB master’s programmes do not require interviews; admission decisions rely on transcripts, English test scores, statement of purpose, and letters of recommendation. Interviews are required for a small set of programmes including MS Speech-Language Pathology, MSW Social Work, and some counselling tracks. Where required, interviews are conducted virtually by faculty panels. Programme pages state interview requirements explicitly at the application stage.
Ques. How much financial proof must Indian applicants show for the CSULB I-20?
Ans. CSULB requires financial documents showing coverage of one full academic year’s estimated total cost of attendance before issuing the I-20, currently USD 45,000 to 55,000 (INR 42.9 to 52.4 lakh). Acceptable proof includes bank statements, sponsor affidavits, or education loan sanction letters dated within six months of submission. Funds must be liquid and accessible; fixed deposits maturing beyond the semester are not accepted.
Ques. Are there any English test waivers for Indian applicants at CSULB?
Ans. CSULB grants English test waivers to applicants who completed at least three years of full-time education at an institution where English is the sole medium of instruction, verified by a letter from the previous university registrar. Indian applicants from English-medium bachelor’s programmes should request the medium-of-instruction certificate from their institution. Applicants completing the American Language Institute Level 6 also satisfy the requirement without external testing.

- For car parking. You have to pay parking fees per month.
Campus Life
- It's only 1 campus, but it's really big, 400 acres big. There is everything on the campus, food, sports area, cafes, restaurants, libraries, 2 nd largest pyramid of USa, and its basketball court. Soccer ground, baseball.
- There are an endless number of clubs and events going on all the timein campus. Flee, fair 4th July festival. The beach is also nearby.
Fees
- Fees are $6000-7000 for semester and you can pay by monthly payment or fully every semester, monthly rent in sharing room is around $600 and othe expenses are $ 500, it depends on you how do you wanna stay you can easily lower or higher you living cost by increasing or decreasing roommates, I personally stayed alone in my room so it was $1300 for me.

Likes
- The campus is really nice with a beautiful and peaceful environment.
- Friends are kind and supportive and the community here is very welcoming.
- There are many departments offering diverse opportunities for learning and growth.
Dislikes
- There’s nothing I dislike about the college. It’s a wonderful place to study with great people, supportive faculty, and a positive environment that makes every day enjoyable and motivating.
- There should be some more focus on students career building.
- There should be increase in number of amenities for students such as day-to-day activities.
Campus Life
- The college has one main campus with a library, sports complex, and medical center(SHS). Popular festivals include Homecoming, Spring Fest, and Monday events. Numerous clubs focus on robotics, arts, engineering, and entrepreneurship.
- Students engage in sports, cultural events, and volunteer activities such as Event Pride, which creates a vibrant, interactive campus life that encourages both personal growth and community involvement.
Fees
- The fee structure is semester-based, covering tuition, campus fees and health charges. Tuition is around 10,000, with additional costs for books and materials.
- Monthly expenses are roughly $600-$700, including rent ($500), transportation ($100), food ($100), and other essentials like internet and utilities. It is as per the I-20 that they have provided.

Likes
- Great environment and friendly atmosphere in general
- Some Professors are really good, like Michael Todd, Fahim, Bo Fu
- Assignments and projects are really managable with social life and designed in a way so that you could focus on networking event.
Dislikes
- I think some Professors are really there just for the sake of completing the subject, which is true in almost majority universities.
- College Pantry is really not good, some food items are expired, so watch out.
- I think we have less Career fairs for Computer Science/IT students, because majority are for core engineering field like electrical and mechanical.
Campus Life
- We have a lot of campus from engineering, art, kinesiology, MBA building, and it's all at 1250 Bellflower Blvd, Long Beach, CA-90840. We do have a library and a recreation centre for sports and medical services, as well as in other buildings. We have Diwali and Holi events every year, managed by Indian students working part-time there.
- In Diwali, we all contribute $5 to the community, and we have a nice event with music and a buffet.
Fees
- I had around $25k in fees and nearly $6.5k per semester, and obviously, for the last semester, you can save some money by taking 4 subjects in one semester, meaning that you are completely your master's in 1.5 years. So, fees can depend on your plan, and it is semester-wise to answer your second question.
- Monthly expenses depend on the individual. I used to stay off campus in an apartment with $700 rent $100 utilities, and $50 for transportation, $100 for groceries, so in total you can say it's about $1000 a month.

The best thing about this university is the location and the price. Its located in long beach in the beautiful SoCal and very close to Los Angeles. It is amazing. Really nice location, nice people and so much to explore and do. The only down side is that it is pretty expensive but atleast the weather is nice here.

There’s a club for everything on campus and there are programs to help students join research in the university. We have a big gym and almost a place for every sport. There are labs for everything if you’re a STEM major. Wifi is available everywhere on campus and the library is pretty huge including collaborative spaces and a lab.
Overview
I really liked the program and the location. This is a well-reputed university. It is not as expensive as UCs but still has a great amount of resources. I love the resources on campus and the fact that they keep us involved. There are opportunities to work on campus as well. I wish we had placements.

Over all experience in California state University, long beach is pretty much good as of now, how ever it totally depends on you, how you upgrade your skills for the jobs to beat the competition as the competition for any single job is much high, and also be prepared well even before you landing in the US.
Campus Life
Good infrastructure with gym and sports facilities, many extracurricular activities will be conducted like basketball and all but as I'm not into sports, I wont be attending there much.
