Admissions at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities are accepted during summer, spring and fall sessions. Students aiming for UG can apply through a Common Application / Coalition Application or Golden Gopher application. For undergraduate admission at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities essays, letters of recommendation or transcripts are not required.

University of Minnesota Admission Requirements for International Students 

Admission at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities for international students can only happen during fall. The University also offers international students the opportunity to study as a non-degree or short-term student.

Language Requirements for International Students

Undergraduate applicants can be exempted from the English proficiency requirement if they score 500 or greater on the SAT test section evidence based reading and writing; or

Score 21 or higher on the ACT exam on the English and Reading sections. Another way is to score 28 or greater on the new SAT writing and language test.

Conditional Admission

University of Minnesota also admits international students whose English proficiency doesn’t meet the required scores by giving them conditional admission.Candidates are automatically considered for conditional admission to the University of Minnesota based on a review of their completed international application for admission.

Immigration and Final Documents Required for International Students

  • Candidates on a temporary student visa are required to submit a Financial Certification Statement.
  • The I-20 document is issued by the university after confirming enrollment.
  • Candidates need to demonstrate that they have enough funds to cover their cost of attendance for the first year of study.
  • After admission, the candidates are required to submit the copy of their passport.
  • The university can also ask to make a deposit in a local U.S. bank before issuing the I-20 form.
  • Admitted applicants are responsible for providing or obtaining health insurance and covering applicable international student fees assessed by the University.
