California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has a total undergraduate enrollment of 961. It enrolls about 230 new freshmen and 10 to 15 new transfer students to campus each fall. Transfer students are accepted for the fall term only.

  • Caltech offers two rounds of admission: early action and regular decision.
  • Undergraduate students can apply online through the common application, the coalition application, or the QuestBridge program.
  • Postgraduate students can apply through the graduate office website.
  • Early Action is non-binding and non-restrictive. Under this, an applicant can apply to other schools as well, as long as Caltech’s policies are not being violated.
  • Under the early action plan, students will be notified in mid-December of the admission decision. Students have until May 1 to make their commitment to attend.
  • Regular decision applicants will be informed of the admission decision by mid-March.

Admission Requirements for International Students

California Institute of Technology accepts applications from students who have completed the approved curriculum provided by their home countries.

  • Required documents include academic transcripts.
  • Students who apply under early action are not offered financial aid. If the applicants need financial aid, they must apply under regular decision. Caltech is need-sensitive for international students.
  • Merit-based scholarships or financial aid are not offered.
  • Special services like the special international student orientation program and international student adviser are available for international students.

Language Requirements for International Students

  • TOEFL scores: required of all international applicants unless their native language is English or they have studied for two or more years in a school where English is the language of instruction. Caltech does not accept the IELTS or any other substitute for the TOEFL requirement.
  • The minimum TOEFL score accepted is 110.

Undergraduate Admission Requirements

  • High school requirements: Four years of mathematics (including calculus), one year of physics, one year of chemistry, three years of English, one year of U.S. history/government.
  • SAT or ACT
  • SAT mathematics level 2
  • One of the following SAT subject tests: Biology (molecular or ecological), Chemistry, or Physics
  • Essay
  • One evaluation from a math or science teacher, and one evaluation from a humanities or social science teacher.
  • A secondary school report must be filled out by the applicant’s high school counselor or other school officials.
  • The total estimated cost of attendance for on-campus students is USD 72084 and for off-campus students is 71712 USD.

Admission Requirements for Transfer Students

  • A completed application
  • Letters of recommendation
  • An official transcript from the last secondary school and all colleges or universities attended
  • Descriptions of all college-level math and science courses
  • Completion of the California Institute of Technology transfer entrance examinations
  • Transfer applicants whose native language is not English require to give TOEFL
  • Evaluation of written English
  • The courses for which transfer applicants will receive credit, and the corresponding class standing, will be determined at the time of enrollment

Graduate Admission Requirements

Applicants are encouraged to submit their applications as early as possible and are responsible for ensuring that all supporting documents are submitted on time. There is no minimum GPA, GRE score, or other quantitative metric used in the evaluation of the institute’s applications. The things taken into consideration are a statement of purpose, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and test scores.

  • The application for admission should be completed through the graduate office website.
  • Applicants do not need to apply for financial aid, they will be automatically considered for it.
  • Application deadlines vary by department.
  • The applicants are responsible for ensuring that all supporting materials are received prior to the application deadline.
  • Once the application has been submitted, modification of supporting documents is not possible, so checking the materials thoroughly before the submission is advised.

Academic and Documental Requirements

  • GRE general scores and subject GRE scores.
  • Supplemental forms and documents: statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, transcripts, and resume or curriculum vitae.
  • A test of English proficiency is required for applicants who are non-native English speakers.

California Institute of Technology Document Submission and Assessment

The application and supporting materials must be submitted online prior to the posted deadline. Following is the procedure to successfully complete the online application process:

  • Applicants have to create a free account with CollegeNET to submit the application form online.
  • Payment of the application fee has to be included or a fee waiver request must be submitted.
  • A statement of purpose, an official electronic copy of transcripts or online grade reports issued by the applicants’ college or university, CV or resume has to be uploaded.
  • Admitted students who plan on attending Caltech will be required to submit an official copy of all transcripts from the registrar’s office prior to enrollment.
  • All submissions must be official copies from the school or college attended. Listings of courses that have been prepared by the applicant will not be considered.
  • GRE, TOEFL, and/or IELTS test scores can be requested to be sent directly to the California Institute of Technology.
  • Three individuals have to be registered from whom the applicant will request letters of recommendation.
  • For nonstandard or international grading systems, applicants are required to provide an official university key or legend with the transcript.
  • All transcripts or records must be in English. If translated, they must be complete and certified versions of the original records.

With an acceptance rate of 7.7%, admission in California Institute of Technology is not easy. The students who are admitted and decide to enroll in the university are provided with the best opportunities and have an immense chance at success.

The university has two rounds of admissions: early decision and regular decision. Although the chances of admission through early decision are greater, if the applicant is financially weak and requires financial assistance, they must apply through regular decision.
