California Institute of Technology Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Caltech assesses Indian applicants on academic depth in mathematics and sciences rather than on rigid cutoffs, but competitive profiles cluster at the top of the Indian scale.
PG Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree: Four-year BE, BTech or BSc with 85% or CGPA 8.5/10 (recommended); Caltech publishes no minimum GPA
- English proficiency: TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo accepted; Caltech sets no minimum score, though competitive PG applicants typically report TOEFL iBT 100+ or IELTS 7.5
- Credential verification: WES evaluation recommended for Indian transcripts
- Standout requirement: Research statement and 3 letters of recommendation; GRE optional for most divisions
UG Requirements
- Class 12: CBSE, ISC or state boards with 90% or higher (recommended), strong grades in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
- Standardised tests: SAT or ACT required for 2027 entry; TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo for medium-of-instruction verification
California Institute of Technology Acceptance Rate 2027
Caltech’s undergraduate acceptance rate sits at 2.6% (estimated) for the most recent admitted class, one of the tightest gates in US higher education. Graduate acceptance rates vary sharply by division but average in the 5% to 8% band across the top engineering options.
| Year | UG Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 entry | 2.6% (estimated) | Steady |
| 2025 entry | 3.1% (estimated) | Tightening |
| 2024 entry | 3.9% (estimated) | Baseline |
Acceptance rates in this range mean fewer than 1 in 35 applicants receives an offer. Indian applicants should treat Caltech as a stretch school regardless of profile strength.
California Institute of Technology Cost of Living for Indian Students 2027
An Indian student self-funding a Caltech MS should budget roughly USD 105,000 (INR 100.3 lakh) for one academic year of tuition plus Pasadena living costs; PhD candidates receive a package that leaves only personal spending uncovered. Fees run higher than most MBA universities in USA because Caltech charges the same flat rate across all divisions.

California Institute of Technology Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
Caltech reports strong graduate outcomes: over 90% of MS and PhD graduates secure roles or postdocs within six months of graduation, driven by proximity to JPL, SpaceX and the wider Los Angeles tech corridor.
- Employment within 6 months: 90% for MS and PhD graduates (institute-reported)
- Median MS starting salary: USD 120,000 (INR 114.6 lakh) per year (market median for Caltech STEM MS)
- Top recruiters: Google, Apple, NASA JPL, SpaceX, Intel, Nvidia, Northrop Grumman, Boeing
- Indian alumni: Satya Nadella-linked alumni network in Big Tech; multiple Caltech PhDs lead R&D at Indian deep-tech startups
- Post-study work: All STEM MS and PhD graduates qualify for 3 years of OPT under the study in USA STEM extension, giving Indian graduates a longer job-search runway
Insider note: JPL and SpaceX hiring lean heavily on Caltech alumni referrals; Indian PhDs in propulsion and aerospace routinely convert internships into full-time roles well before graduation.
Caltech makes sense for the Indian applicant whose profile is research-first and STEM-deep, with a Class 12 aggregate above 95% or a BTech CGPA above 8.5, and a genuine willingness to publish before graduation. The total four-year investment of USD 262,488 (INR 250.7 lakh) is only recoverable through funded PhD entry or an MS-to-OPT-to-H1B pathway feeding a USD 120,000 median STEM salary and a fast-track F1 student visa route.
Caltech is not the right fit for applicants seeking broad business, humanities or design programmes, for those who need part-time work or scholarship-covered MS funding, or for candidates whose profile leans heavily on extracurriculars over research. Stanford or UC Berkeley usually give Indian applicants a stronger match on both fronts.
California Institute of Technology FAQs
Ques. Does Caltech offer online or joint-degree programmes for Indian applicants?
Ans. Caltech does not offer fully online degrees for Indian applicants. All BS, MS and PhD programmes are on-campus in Pasadena. The institute runs joint research programmes with NASA JPL and shares selected coursework with the Keck Graduate Institute, but Indian applicants must be resident in the United States on an F1 or J1 visa to enrol. Executive-education short courses are available online through Caltech CTME.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at Caltech?
Ans. Yes. F1 visa holders at Caltech may work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during term and 40 hours during breaks, in roles such as research assistant, teaching assistant or library assistant. Off-campus work needs Curricular Practical Training authorisation and only applies from the second year. Caltech PhD students on funded packages already receive stipend-based compensation and rarely need additional employment.
Ques. Is the GRE required for MS admission to Caltech in 2027?
Ans. The GRE is optional across most Caltech divisions for 2027 entry, including Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Applied Mathematics. Chemistry, Physics and Biology still recommend the GRE Subject Test for competitive applicants. Indian applicants without extensive research publications should submit a GRE score above 325 to strengthen their profile; those with strong first-author publications can safely skip it.
Ques. What is the application fee for Caltech graduate admissions?
Ans. Caltech charges USD 100 (INR 9,550) per graduate application, payable at the time of submission through the online application portal. Indian applicants facing genuine financial hardship can request a fee waiver directly from the target division before starting the application. Undergraduate applicants apply through the Coalition Application with a separate USD 75 (INR 7,163) fee, also waivable on documented need.
Ques. Which Indian banks recognise Caltech for education loans?
Ans. SBI, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, IDFC First and Avanse all cover Caltech under their preferred-university lists, offering loans up to INR 1.5 crore without collateral for admitted PhD candidates and up to INR 75 lakh for MS applicants with strong co-applicants. Interest rates for Caltech typically sit 25 to 50 basis points below the standard US-university rate because of the institute’s top-10 ranking.
Ques. How do Indian applicants prove financial support for a Caltech F1 visa?
Ans. Caltech issues the I-20 only after Indian applicants submit bank statements or sanctioned loan letters covering one year of tuition plus living costs, totalling around USD 105,000 (INR 100.3 lakh). Funded PhD admits use their offer letter as proof and skip the personal-funds requirement. Fixed deposits and mutual-fund statements up to six months old are accepted; property valuations and gold-loan statements are not.
Ques. Can Indian applicants get an English test waiver at Caltech?
Ans. Yes. Caltech waives the TOEFL, IELTS, PTE and Duolingo requirement for Indian applicants who completed their bachelor’s degree entirely in English at an accredited Indian institution. Applicants must upload a medium-of-instruction letter from the registrar on official letterhead. Most Indian BTech, BE and BSc graduates from IITs, NITs, IISc and top private universities qualify without submitting a test score.
Ques. What is the transcript verification process for Indian applicants at Caltech?
Ans. Caltech accepts uploaded PDF transcripts at the application stage and requires official transcripts only after admission. Admitted Indian students must send sealed originals directly from their university registrar to Caltech Graduate Studies. WES evaluation is not mandatory but recommended for degrees graded on non-standard scales. Allow 6 to 8 weeks for Indian universities to issue and dispatch sealed transcripts.

Overview
My sister who lived in the USA had suggested me to take admission in this college. An online application form was submitted by me with an application fee $75 to get admission. They even asked me to show my undergraduate mark-sheet where I got 9.5 GPA.
Fees
The tuition cost I paid was $52,000 plus a fee of $2000 was also charged form me. Other than this my books supplied and miscellaneous expenses got close to $1200 and $1800. Thankfully I received the financial aid of $10,000 which I had applied during the process of admission.
