University of Vermont offers 15+ merit-based and departmental scholarships, of which 10 remain accessible to Indian applicants across undergraduate, master’s, and PhD programs.

Awards range from small visit stipends to full-tuition graduate assistantships that also carry a living stipend. Most UG merit awards need no separate application, while grad funding runs through the program you apply to.

  • Standard out-of-state UG tuition + comprehensive fee: USD 49,713 (INR 47.35 Lakhs)
  • With top-tier Presidential Scholarship (USD 25,000): net cost falls to USD 24,713 (INR 23.54 Lakhs)
  • Presidential plus UVM Visit Award stack: annual net cost lands near USD 23,713 (INR 22.58 Lakhs)
  • Next Fall 2027 auto-scholarship deadline: Early Action, November 1, 2026

Currency Note: All INR conversions use the live rate of 1 USD = INR 95.24 as of August 2026. Amounts above INR 1 Lakh are shown in Lakhs; smaller sums use full INR.

University of Vermont Scholarships for UG Students

All three UG merit awards below are granted automatically. The university reads your Common App and mails the award letter along with your admission decision.

ScholarshipAnnual Value (USD / INR)Key EligibilityDeadline
Presidential ScholarshipUSD 20,000 to USD 25,000 (INR 19.05 to 23.81 Lakhs)Out-of-state first-year applicant with strongest academic record; four-year renewable at 3.0 GPANovember 1, 2026 (Early Action, Fall 2027)
Trustees ScholarshipUSD 10,000 to USD 15,000 (INR 9.52 to 14.29 Lakhs)Out-of-state first-year applicant with strong academics; four-year renewable at 3.0 GPAJanuary 15, 2027 (Regular Decision, Fall 2027)
UVM Visit AwardUSD 1,000 per year, up to USD 4,000 total (INR 95,240 up to INR 3.81 Lakhs cumulative)First-year or transfer applicant who books an official campus visit between Jan 1 and Nov 1, 2026November 1, 2026 (visit booking cut-off)

Indian applicants qualify for Presidential and Trustees on the same footing as any out-of-state student. The two merit awards are not paired; UVM picks the highest one you win.

Add the Visit Award on top of either merit scholarship if you can travel to Burlington before applying. Registering the campus visit through UVM Admissions is what triggers the payout.

University of Vermont Scholarships for PG / Master’s Students

Most master’s funding at UVM comes through Graduate College academic appointments. These package tuition coverage with a taxable living stipend, so total value often crosses USD 60,000 (INR 57.14 Lakhs).

Scholarship / AppointmentAnnual Value (USD / INR)Key EligibilityDeadline
Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA)Stipend USD 25,781 (9-month) or USD 34,375 (12-month); plus full tuition for 9 credits per semester (INR 24.55 to 32.74 Lakhs stipend, plus roughly INR 33 Lakhs tuition waiver)Open to international, full-time master’s applicants; TOEFL 100 or IELTS 7.0 for teaching rolesPriority funding: January 1, 2027 (Fall 2027 intake)
Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA)Same stipend and tuition band as the GTAAwarded by a faculty advisor; strong prior research helps; open to international applicantsRolling, tied to program cut-off (tentative June 24, 2027 for Fall admission)
Bridge to Vermont Tuition ScholarshipPartial tuition; amount set by CESS each admission cycleNon-Vermont resident or international master’s applicant in College of Education and Social ServicesPriority: March 1, 2027 (Fall 2027 education programs)
Graduate Impact Scholarship (CESS)Amount set at admission based on merit and demonstrated needAll CESS master’s applicants; needs CESS scholarship form plus FAFSA (or a need statement for Indian applicants)Final: May 1, 2027 (Fall 2027 admission)
Inclusive Excellence Scholarship (CESS)Amount not published; renewable for a second yearCESS master’s applicants whose lived experience aligns with the program focusFinal: May 1, 2027 (Fall 2027 admission)

UVM caps combinations: if you accept a GTA or GRA, you cannot also draw a CESS scholarship. Pick the assistantship since its stipend and tuition waiver together beat any standalone award.

Reddit Insight: Indian applicants in STEM master’s programs report that faculty-funded GRA offers usually appear after your first semester on campus. Plan year one out of pocket if the offer letter mentions no funding.

India-Specific Scholarships at University of Vermont

UVM does not publish any scholarship reserved solely for Indian passport holders. Indian applicants compete inside the pooled international bucket, which is how most US public universities structure their aid.

AwardAnnual Value (USD / INR)Key Eligibility for IndiansDeadline
Presidential and Trustees ScholarshipsUSD 10,000 to USD 25,000 (INR 9.52 to 23.81 Lakhs)Awarded to any out-of-state first-year applicant; Indian nationality does not change eligibility or dollar bandNovember 1, 2026 or January 15, 2027 (Fall 2027)
Graduate Assistantships (GTA / GRA / GA)USD 25,781 (9-month) or USD 34,375 (12-month) stipend plus tuition waiver (INR 24.55 to 32.74 Lakhs plus waiver)Open to Indian master’s and PhD applicants; visa status is not a disqualifierFunding priority: January 1, 2027 (Fall 2027 cohort)
Departmental FellowshipsVaries by department; typically USD 3,000 to USD 10,000 (INR 2.86 to 9.52 Lakhs)Awarded through the specific master’s or PhD program; email the graduate coordinator once you applyTied to program cut-off (tentative June 24, 2027 for Fall admission)

For genuinely India-only funding, layer an external award (see the government section) on top of any UVM scholarship. Nothing in UVM policy stops that combination.

For Indian applicants, the practical scholarship stack looks like this:

  • UG: Presidential plus Visit Award, worth around USD 26,000 (INR 24.76 Lakhs) per year
  • Master’s: Graduate Teaching Assistantship first, CESS Bridge to Vermont Scholarship as fallback
  • PhD: 12-month GRA plus a Traineeship top-up when your lab holds an NSF grant

University of Vermont PhD Scholarships

PhD funding at UVM is close to guaranteed for admitted students. Almost every doctoral offer bundles a 12-month assistantship with tuition coverage, since departments rarely admit PhDs they cannot fund.

Scholarship / AppointmentAnnual Value (USD / INR)Key EligibilityDeadline
Doctoral GTA / GRAMinimum stipend USD 34,375 (12-month) plus 9-credit tuition waiver each semester (INR 32.74 Lakhs stipend plus roughly INR 33 Lakhs waiver)Admitted PhD applicant matched with a funded advisor; TOEFL 100 for teaching rolesJanuary 1, 2027 priority for Fall 2027 admits
Predoctoral FellowshipsStipend at or above the GTA rate; often no teaching duty attachedNominated by the department; strongest incoming or continuing PhD studentsNominations close in February 2027 (tentative)
Graduate College Conference GrantUp to USD 500 (INR 47,620) per tripPhD student presenting research at a peer-reviewed conference; the program must match fundsRolling; tentative cut-off four weeks before each conference
Traineeships (NIH, NSF, USDA)Stipend USD 27,144 to USD 45,000 (INR 25.85 to 42.86 Lakhs) plus tuitionProgram-specific; some NIH T32 slots are US-only, but NSF and USDA slots stay open to IndiansRolling; tied to grant cycle

Confirm the funding line in your PhD offer letter before you sign. Some UVM departments quote 5-year packages while others renew year by year, which changes your visa financial documentation.

External Government Scholarships for University of Vermont Students

Indian students at UVM also draw on India-funded and third-party US-focused awards. These sit outside UVM’s own aid budget and can layer on top of your admission scholarship.

Reddit Insight: Indian STEM applicants report the J.N. Tata Endowment as the highest hit-rate option once a UVM admit is in hand. The gift portion alone often covers the visa I-20 shortfall.

UVM’s own financial aid team accepts external award letters and applies them against your billed tuition. Send the letter to Student Financial Services once you deposit.

University of Vermont Scholarships: Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. What is the highest scholarship an Indian student can win at University of Vermont?

Ans. Undergraduates can pair the Presidential Scholarship (USD 25,000) with the UVM Visit Award (USD 1,000), reaching USD 26,000 (INR 24.76 Lakhs) per year. Master’s and PhD applicants go further. A Graduate Teaching Assistantship covers full tuition and adds a stipend of USD 25,781 to USD 34,375 (INR 24.55 to 32.74 Lakhs), so the total package tops USD 60,000 (INR 57.14 Lakhs) each year.

Ques. When should I apply to maximise scholarship chances at UVM?

Ans. Apply by Early Action on November 1, 2026 for the Fall 2027 UG intake. Merit awards are drawn from the same applicant pool, but the earliest reviewers see the largest untouched budget. For master’s programs, submit by the January 1, 2027 priority funding cut-off to be considered for assistantships alongside admission.

Ques. Do I need a separate application for UVM scholarships?

Ans. No separate form is needed for the Presidential, Trustees, or Visit Award at UG level. Master’s assistantships need you to email the program’s graduate coordinator after submitting the main application. CESS scholarships require the CESS General Application Form plus a need statement from Indian applicants (FAFSA is US-only).

Ques. What academic score do I need for a top UVM merit scholarship?

Ans. Presidential Scholars typically enter with a 3.8+ unweighted GPA or a 90%+ CBSE / ISC aggregate. Trustees awardees sit around 3.5 GPA or 85% board score. For grad assistantships, most funded admits show a first-class bachelor’s (60%+ or 7.5+ CGPA) plus prior research or teaching work.

Ques. Will UVM scholarships cover living costs in Burlington?

Ans. Undergraduate merit awards go against tuition only. Plan USD 15,000 (INR 14.29 Lakhs) per year for on-campus room and board out of pocket. Master’s and PhD assistantships include a taxable stipend that covers most rent and food in Burlington. A shared apartment there runs USD 700 to USD 1,000 per month.

Ques. Can I combine UVM scholarships with Fulbright or J.N. Tata funding?

Ans. Yes. UVM Student Financial Services accepts external award letters and layers them on top of your admission scholarship. The only cap: you cannot draw both a UVM assistantship and a CESS tuition scholarship in the same term.

UVM and the VT environment surrounding it is so different compared to where I grew up. I was attracted to the challenge of change. I also liked UVM for the nature of its students. Students are extra passionate about their values and beliefs and it shows. I also chose UVM to be on the TF team.
