Insider note: Indian applicants overwhelmingly cluster in three UVM programmes: MS Computer Science, MS Complex Systems and Data Science, and the Sustainable Innovation MBA. The two-year STEM master’s carry a 36-month post-completion OPT window, which is the primary reason Indian students weigh UVM over cheaper non-STEM options.

University of Vermont Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

The University of Vermont admission requirements for Indian students centre on academic transcripts, a verified English test, and credential evaluation through a NACES-approved service before enrolment.

PG Requirements

  • Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree with 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 (recommended) from a recognised Indian university; UVM accepts three-year Indian bachelor’s on a case-by-case basis after credential evaluation.
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 90 (or 4.5 on the new 1-6 band scale in use since January 21, 2026), IELTS 6.5, or Duolingo 110. Graduate Teaching Assistantship funding needs higher: TOEFL 100 (or 5 on the new scale), IELTS 7.0, or Duolingo 120.
  • Credential verification: NACES or AICE-approved evaluation (SpanTran offers UVM-partnered discounted evaluation); start 6 to 8 weeks before the departmental deadline.
  • Programme-specific: GRE is required for some doctoral tracks and optional for most master’s; Sustainable Innovation MBA prefers 2 to 5 years of work experience and GMAT or GRE is optional.

UG Requirements

  • Academic: Class 12 with 75% to 85% (recommended) in a recognised Indian board; competitive science and health programmes such as Nursing and Biological Sciences look for 80%+.
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 80 or IELTS 6.5; SAT and ACT are optional under UVM’s test-optional policy.

Key insight: Indian applicants with Class 12 English scoring 80% and above, or with all Indian secondary education delivered in English medium, can request an English test waiver at the graduate stage. UVM handles this on a case-by-case basis after the departmental review, so Indian students planning an MBA in USA should still budget for an English test in year one.

University of Vermont Acceptance Rate 2027

The University of Vermont acceptance rate sits at 65% (estimated) based on the most recent third-party admissions data, with the Honors College and competitive Nursing, Environmental and Health programmes admitting at tighter rates than the headline figure. UVM does not publish an official annual acceptance rate for the international pool, so Indian applicants should treat the 65% figure as an aggregate signal rather than a programme-level number.

Applications have risen sharply in recent cycles, with UVM reporting an all-time application record in the last admission year. Indian applicants targeting Nursing, Neuroscience and the Sustainable Innovation MBA face admit rates materially lower than the university-wide figure, while liberal arts and general Science admits track closer to the headline.

Reality check: A 65% university-wide acceptance rate does not mean 65% admit odds for Indian applicants in MS Computer Science or Nursing. Those departments run their own pools, and Indian STEM master’s admits typically require 70% and above in Bachelor’s with strong English scores to be competitive.

Monthly Cost of Living in Burlington for Indian Students

UVM publishes an on-campus cost estimate covering housing, food, books, personal expenses and transport. Off-campus Burlington rentals run higher, particularly in Downtown and South End, so many Indian students stay on-campus for the first two semesters.

Insider note: Off-campus one-bedroom rents in Old North End and Hill Section run USD 1,650 to USD 1,850 per month, cheaper than downtown Burlington’s USD 2,200+ range. Shared apartments among Indian graduate cohorts typically bring individual rent to USD 700 to USD 900 per month.

University of Vermont Campus, Facilities and Student Life

The University of Vermont sits on a 460-acre residential campus in Burlington, a college city of 44,000 on Lake Champlain, two hours by regional flight from Boston and New York.

  • Location and transport: Campus is walkable to downtown, and Green Mountain Transit buses connect Burlington on a flat USD 50 monthly pass; the free UVM shuttle links academic buildings and residence halls.
  • On-campus housing: All first-year students live on campus; UVM guarantees housing for two years and charges USD 14,654 per year (INR 13.9 lakh) covering housing and a full meal plan.
  • Facilities: The 186,000-square-foot Davis Center is the main student hub, and Howe Library holds more than 1.6 million volumes with dedicated 24-hour graduate study space.
  • Indian community: Indian students cluster in the South Asian Student Association and receive dedicated orientation from UVM’s Office of International Education each semester.

What Indian students say: Burlington runs quiet and safe compared to larger US cities, though winters are long and off-campus housing turns scarce between December and February. Most Indian graduate students stay on-campus for the first semester before shifting to shared apartments in the Old North End or Hill Section by January.

University of Vermont Rankings 2027

The University of Vermont ranks in the top 15% of US universities, holding a steady position across US News and QS World editions, with its strongest signal in US-focused ranking bodies rather than global tables.

As per US News, UVM sits at #61 among US public universities in the 2026 Best Colleges list, a position it has held within the top 100 publics for the last decade. Collegedunia Study Abroad ranks the University of Vermont #71 among 357 US universities, giving Indian applicants a comparable Indian-audience signal alongside global tables.

Key insight: UVM’s US News national rank of #132 is the ranking Indian students should weigh most, since US employers and F-1 to H-1B recruiters read US News Best Colleges as the reference tier. The QS band position matters less to US hiring but still meets Indian education loan bank thresholds.

University of Vermont Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

The University of Vermont career outcomes track strong for STEM master’s and Grossman School MBA graduates, with early-career earnings above US national medians and a Sustainable Innovation MBA cohort clearing 98% employment within six months.

  • Employment within 6 months: 95% for Grossman School business graduates and 98% for the Sustainable Innovation MBA cohort, as per Grossman School of Business.
  • Median early-career salary: USD 60,000 (INR 57.1 lakh) rising to USD 110,000 (INR 104.8 lakh) at mid-career, market median across UVM alumni.
  • By field: MS Electrical Engineering median USD 66,622 (INR 63.4 lakh), MS Mechanical Engineering USD 57,570 (INR 54.8 lakh), MS Computer Science USD 46,950 (INR 44.7 lakh), Nursing USD 61,600 (INR 58.7 lakh).
  • Sustainable Innovation MBA median starting salary: USD 79,754 (INR 76.0 lakh), market median, representing an 82% ROI on the USD 43,875 programme fee.
  • Recent recruiter examples: Google, Amazon, Goldman Sachs, PwC, KPMG, Boeing, Johnson & Johnson, Morgan Stanley, GE, Fidelity, Ben & Jerry’s and Seventh Generation.
  • Post-study work visa: STEM OPT gives Indian graduates 36 months of US work authorisation after graduation, and 12 months for non-STEM degrees, a factor Indian students weigh when comparing UVM against alternatives to study in USA.

Insider note: Indian STEM graduates from UVM converting to H-1B often route through Boston and New York offices of the named recruiters, with the 2-hour flight radius from Burlington a practical advantage. Non-STEM master’s cohorts should plan H-1B strategy carefully given the tighter 12-month OPT window.

University of Vermont vs Peer Universities

[Source: QS World University Rankings 2027; Collegedunia Study Abroad]

The University of Vermont stands out for Indian applicants seeking a mid-tier US public with STEM OPT eligibility and a distinctive Sustainable Innovation MBA at less than half the fee of comparable AACSB-accredited private programmes. UVM’s smaller Indian cohort translates into stronger faculty access and a lower cost profile than Connecticut, Syracuse or UMass Amherst.

Conclusion

UVM fits Indian students seeking a mid-tier US public research university with STEM OPT eligibility, on-campus housing guarantees and merit scholarships covering up to USD 25,000 per year of tuition. At a two-year MS total of USD 58,320 (INR 55.5 lakh) against a market median early-career salary of USD 60,000, the ROI arithmetic works for STEM master’s and Sustainable Innovation MBA candidates who target Boston and New York labour markets within OPT.

UVM is not the right pick for Indian applicants who prioritise top-100 global QS rank or large metropolitan campus life. Applicants who need those signals should compare University of Connecticut, which sits higher in QS and offers a bigger US urban footprint at higher cost.

Overview

UVM and the VT environment surrounding it is so different compared to where I grew up. I was attracted to the challenge of change. I also liked UVM for the nature of its students. Students are extra passionate about their values and beliefs and it shows. I also chose UVM to be on the TF team.
