  • Base tuition sits at USD 33,530 (around INR 31.98 Lakhs) per year for international graduate students, plus a graduate application fee of USD 180 (around INR 17,167) including credential evaluation.
  • UG applicants need Class XII around 65% or higher, PG applicants a relevant Bachelor’s near 65% (roughly a US 3.0 GPA), plus IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 80.
  • UIC’s acceptance rate sits around 77%, estimated from recent cycle data, since the university does not publish an official institutional figure.

Popular Indian picks include MS Computer Science, MS Business Analytics, MS Management Information Systems and the Flex MBA at the Liautaud School, with recent cohorts pointing to Chicago’s hiring pipeline as the main draw. See the University of Illinois Chicago profile for the wider ranking, cost and campus picture.

University of Illinois Chicago Eligibility for Indian Students

UIC accepts applicants who meet its stated academic and English floors, with no fixed quotas by country. Both first-year and graduate paths use one institutional English minimum and let departments layer program-specific coursework on top. English scores must be valid at the time of application, per the official UIC international requirements page.

  • UG general entry: Class XII from a recognised board at around 65% or higher, with subject prerequisites for Engineering, Nursing and Computer Science tracks.
  • PG general entry: Four-year Bachelor’s in a relevant field, roughly 65% or better on Indian marking (equivalent to a US 3.0 GPA).
  • PhD entry: Bachelor’s or Master’s in a related field, with the final 60 credit hours around 75% (US 3.5 GPA) for Computer Science.
  • English proficiency (institution-wide floor): IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 80, PTE Academic 54, or Duolingo 130 for graduate applicants (Duolingo 120 for undergraduates).
  • Standardised tests: UIC is test-optional for first-year admissions and GRE-optional for most graduate programs, though MS Computer Science international applicants still submit GRE with a combined 300 minimum.

University of Illinois Chicago IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

UIC does publish English test waivers, but they are narrower than at most peer US universities. A pure medium-of-instruction letter from an Indian college is not accepted, even for graduates of English-medium institutions. Qualifying pathways for Indian applicants, all within the past five years, include:

  • Two consecutive years of full-time study at a US institution or in a country where English is the sole official language.
  • One year of full-time employment in an English-primary country.
  • SAT Evidence-Based Reading 570+, ACT English 24+, AP English 4+, or IB English 5+ scores.
  • IGCSE or O-Level English in at least five subjects with grades A, B, or C (undergraduate applicants only).

Reality check: Most Indian applicants coming straight from an Indian degree will need a fresh IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or Duolingo score. Budget the test date at least three months before your target deadline.

University of Illinois Chicago PG Programs and English Requirements

UIC offers around 100 master’s programs across its 16 colleges, with Indian demand concentrated in Computer Science, Business Analytics, Management Information Systems and Finance. University of Illinois Chicago UG Programs and Eligibility

Indian undergraduate applicants apply to UIC through the Common Application for first-year entry, with test-optional admission for most programs. Estimated base tuition and mandatory fees for international first-year students in AY 2026-2027 sit at around USD 35,596 (around INR 33.95 Lakhs) per year for general programs, and around USD 38,292 (around INR 36.52 Lakhs) for Engineering and Computer Science (Liberal Arts and Sciences).

Programme Duration Minimum Eligibility English Req. Min.
BS Computer Science (LAS) 4 years Class XII around 65% or higher with Mathematics IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 80, PTE 54, Duolingo 120
BS Business Administration 4 years Class XII around 65% or higher IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 80, PTE 54, Duolingo 120

First-year applicants pay an application fee of USD 170 (around INR 16,213), made up of the USD 70 standard fee and the USD 100 international credential evaluation fee. Applicants must submit official transcripts from every post-secondary institution attended, plus ATA-certified English translations for any non-English credentials. UIC follows a test-optional policy for SAT and ACT, but strong scores can support scholarship consideration.

University of Illinois Chicago MBA Admissions and Application Rounds

UIC’s Liautaud Graduate School of Business runs two MBA formats aimed at working professionals and international applicants: the campus-based Flex MBA and the fully Online MBA. Both are reviewed on a rolling basis rather than through fixed rounds, with multiple start dates spread across the year, per the official UIC Business graduate degrees page.

Flex MBA and Online MBA Formats

  • Flex MBA: Three start dates per year (August, January and May), campus-based in downtown Chicago, and requires a virtual interview after initial review.
  • Online MBA: Five start dates per year (August, October, January, March and May), fully online, and delivers admission decisions within 10 business days of a completed application.
  • The Flex MBA is the standard route for Indian students who want in-person US study experience, while the Online MBA suits applicants staying in India.

UIC MBA Test, Fee and Interview Requirements

GMAT, GRE, and Executive Assessment scores are optional for both Flex and Online MBA, though competitive scores strengthen merit-aid chances. The application fee is USD 80 (around INR 7,630), waived for UIC alumni, plus the USD 100 international credential evaluation for applicants with foreign transcripts. Two professional recommendation letters, a personal statement, a current resume and official transcripts are required. Only Flex MBA candidates go through a virtual interview stage.

Insider note: Rolling admissions do not mean deadlines are soft. UIC Business fills scholarship pools early, so submit at least three months before your target start date if you want a real shot at merit aid.

University of Illinois Chicago PhD Admissions and Funding

UIC offers 63 doctoral programs across engineering, computing, health sciences, business, humanities and social sciences. Admission for research doctorates is competitive and coupled with funding, so applicants apply directly to their department rather than through a central PhD portal. Deadlines are earlier than for master’s programs to align with fellowship review cycles.

PhD Computer Science Deadlines and Requirements

  • Fall 2027 recommended deadline: 15 December 2026, which also reduces the international application fee to USD 100 (around INR 9,537).
  • Fall 2027 final deadline: 15 February 2027, with the full USD 180 (around INR 17,167) international application fee applied.
  • Academic minimum: Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a closely related field, with the final 60 undergraduate credit hours at a US 3.5 GPA (around 75% Indian).
  • English proficiency: Same institutional floor as master’s applicants (IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 80, PTE 54).
  • GRE: Not required, considered if submitted.

UIC PhD Funding for International Students

UIC’s Computer Science PhD guarantees a funded appointment for the first five years of enrollment, covering a full tuition waiver, partial fee waiver and a stipend paid as a research or teaching assistantship. Similar guarantees apply across most STEM PhD programs. Indian PhD applicants should highlight prior research output, publications and faculty fit in their statement of purpose, since the department screens on research match before funding is offered.

University of Illinois Chicago Application Process for Indian Students

UIC uses three separate application routes depending on applicant level: first-year undergraduates go through the Common Application, transfer undergraduates use UIC’s ApplyNow portal, and graduate and professional applicants use ApplyGrad. Follow the sequence below in order for a smooth Fall 2027 submission.

  1. Choose your portal. First-year UG applicants create a Common App account (the 2026-27 cycle opened on 31 July 2026). PG applicants register on ApplyGrad, which opened Fall 2027 applications on 1 August 2026.
  2. Pay the application fee. UG international applicants pay a USD 170 (around INR 16,213) application fee at submission via the Common App portal. PG international applicants pay USD 180 (around INR 17,167) via ApplyGrad, both figures include the USD 100 credential evaluation.
  3. Submit academic credentials. Upload official transcripts from every post-secondary institution, plus degree certificates for completed degrees. Non-English documents need an ATA-certified translation.
  4. Send test scores. Report IELTS, TOEFL (code 1851), PTE or Duolingo scores directly from the test provider. GRE and GMAT are optional for most programs but required for MS Computer Science international applicants.
  5. Add program-specific materials. Statement of purpose, two to three recommendation letters, resume, and any portfolio, writing sample or interview scheduled at the department’s request.
  6. Track your status. Log into the same portal for decision updates and I-20 issuance once admitted.

UIC Admission Decisions and Timelines

Decision timing depends on the route. Common App Early Action first-year applicants can expect decisions by early January 2027, and Regular Decision applicants by late March 2027. Rolling PG programs typically respond within 6 to 10 weeks of a complete file, and the Online MBA promises 10 business days. Admitted students then have until 1 May 2027 to accept for Fall 2027 first-year entry and pay any confirmation deposit, per the standard US National Candidate Reply Date.

Documents Required for University of Illinois Chicago Admission

UIC’s document checklist for Indian applicants covers identity, academics, funding and language, all uploaded through the relevant portal. Keep certified digital copies handy so you can move fast if a department asks for additional materials.

  • Valid passport bio-page (used for I-20 issuance later).
  • Official transcripts from every high school and university attended, in sealed envelopes for physical dispatch.
  • Degree award certificate or diploma for every completed programme.
  • ATA-certified English translation for any non-English academic document.
  • Course-level syllabi with English translation, if requested by the graduate department.
  • Statement of purpose (500 to 1,000 words) tailored to the specific UIC department.
  • Two to three letters of recommendation from academic or professional referees.
  • Current resume or CV, especially for MBA and MS Business Analytics.
  • Official IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or Duolingo score report sent from the test provider.
  • GRE or GMAT score report only where the specific program requires it.
  • Financial proof (bank statement or scholarship letter) covering one full academic year, requested at the I-20 stage after admission.
  • Portfolio for MDes Industrial Design and other design programs.

Insider note: Ask your recommenders to reference specific projects, coursework or professional outcomes. UIC graduate reviewers weight concrete evidence over generic praise, especially for STEM and business programs.

University of Illinois Chicago Acceptance Rate for Indian Students

UIC’s overall acceptance rate sits around 76%, based on aggregated admission-cycle data for its most recent published intake. Selectivity varies sharply by program, so the headline number is a poor guide to your individual odds.

How Program-Level Selectivity Differs at UIC?

MS Computer Science, MS Business Analytics and the Flex MBA are noticeably more competitive than the institutional average, driven by high Indian and international demand. Nursing, Design and PhD programs use portfolio, research fit and interview screens rather than pure GPA cut-offs. For a wider view, check UIC’s ranking band across QS, THE and US News.

UIC Admission Signals for Indian Applicants

Admission officers weigh Class XII or Bachelor’s grades, English proficiency, a targeted statement of purpose and department fit. UIC is test-optional at the undergraduate level and GRE-optional across most graduate programs (MS Computer Science international applicants excepted), so a strong academic record and a program-specific statement carry more weight than a standalone test score.

Insider note: A 76% acceptance rate is misleading for competitive Indian applications. Treat MS CS as 30 to 40% selective at UIC, and MS Business Analytics or MBA as similar in a strong applicant year.

USA Student Visa Process for University of Illinois Chicago Applicants

Admitted Indian students at UIC need the F-1 student visa to enter and study in the US. The process begins after you accept UIC’s offer and the Office of International Services issues your Form I-20. From there, pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (around INR 33,380), pay the DS-160 machine-readable visa fee of USD 185 (around INR 17,643), and book your visa appointment at a US Embassy or Consulate in India (Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata or Hyderabad).

Take your I-20, DS-160 confirmation, SEVIS payment receipt, passport, financial proof for one academic year and academic documents to the interview. Officers focus on your ties to India, funding source and academic intent. On approval, plan travel within 30 days of your program start date, and register with UIC’s Office of International Services immediately after arrival. Post-study, F-1 holders in STEM programs qualify for up to 36 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT).

2026 update: Visa appointment wait times at Indian US consulates remain volatile. Book your slot as soon as your I-20 arrives, and keep both a primary and backup consulate open in your DS-160 to speed things up.

University of Illinois Chicago Admissions Tips and Application Checklist

The following tips and steps are drawn from recent Indian-applicant patterns at UIC, mixing insight on what UIC weighs with a timeline for a Fall 2027 target.

  • Book your IELTS or TOEFL 12 to 16 weeks before deadline: UIC requires valid scores at time of submission, and India test slots fill up around September and December.
  • Request transcripts 8 weeks before deadline: Indian university registrars can take four to six weeks to issue sealed transcripts and consolidated marksheets.
  • Draft your SOP department-specific: A generic statement flagged as reused across schools is a common Indian applicant weakness UIC reviewers spot fast.
  • Approach recommenders 6 weeks before deadline: Academic referees need lead time to write substantive letters, especially in Indian university calendars.
  • Verify GRE need for MS Computer Science: International CS applicants still need a 300 combined GRE minimum with Verbal 140+, even where domestic applicants are waived.
  • Submit MBA scholarship applications by early rounds: UIC Business allocates merit aid first-come, first-served on rolling review.
  • Finalise financial proof before I-20 request: Bank statements must cover one full academic year of tuition and living costs and be dated within six months.
  • Book F-1 visa slot within one week of I-20 receipt: Indian consulate slots for August travel typically fill by April to May.

UIC is one of the more accessible major US research universities for Indian applicants, with a broad program catalog, moderate English floors, transparent deadlines and a Chicago hiring pipeline that stays strong across cycles. Line up documents early, apply through the correct portal for your level, and target the Fall 2027 primary intake for the widest program choice.

Scholarship

  • I got a TA assistantship for 2 semesters but I had to reject it since I got an offer to work outside in a company.
  • I received a fee exemption to pay just the tuition differential of around $2,357 and get $2,000 in payment as a stipend.
  • My friends got a GA and it was tuition exempt plus $2,800 per semester.
  • Almost 60 per cent of the students would get a GA or TA. But that is all changed right now, since after the Trump administration, the grants to the college has reduced and they have cut down most of the GA programmes, so I would say around 20 per cent now would get a GA or TA. it is not really as good as before.

  • There are many scholarships that an individual can apply for. Most of them are external and some are funded by organisations and recognising communities. The university sends a weekly mail showing the opportunities for scholarships. But if you get a fee waiver, you won't be eligible for most of the scholarships. Rather than scholarship, the fee is mostly covered through assistantships.
  • The award amounts range anywhere from 500 USD to 20,000 USD, depending on the scholarship. There will be some emergency helping funds. You should keep an eye out and apply, all of them are mostly difficult to acquire since they are not initiated by the university.

Overview

The experience at UIC was great. The course structure and prof and especially part time job opportunities are good. Chicago is a place where commute is easier in the city and UIC is also close to downtown. Facilities like night ride(free rides for UIC students post 11pm, 24*7 library during exam times, Early morning gym timings) are very useful for international students.

Scholarship

I applied through UIC global and I got a scholarship of $1000.

Overview

I chose this program because it is one of the most highly ranked programs in the field of health economics and outcomes research. The faculty members are widely recognized both nationally and internationally. Also, previous students from my undergrad college had attended this program and shared their positive experiences and highly recommended joining it.

Scholarship

I received a TAship in my first year. The department guarantees funding in the form of TA for two years and students have the opportunity to find RAships after starting the program.

Overview

My fascination with science propelled me to choose Biotechnology for my under graduation. I decided to further study this course in detail by majoring in the medicinal side of biotechnology. I then started hunting for MS in Medical Biotechnology which was offered only by a few universities in the United States and the University of Illinois at Chicago was one among them.
